New Features Windows 10 is Microsoft s newest operating system. While older versions of Windows ran mostly on desktop and laptops, the new Windows 10 version runs on all Windows devices, including tablets and mobile devices. The most notable new features of Windows 10 include: Start Menu Windows 10 brings back the more traditional Start Menu from Windows 7, but retains the Live Tiles from Windows 8 to make it easier to find important apps. Universal Apps Windows 10 Universal Applications are designed to run on all Windows devices, including tablets and phones and are available in the Windows Store. Cortana Cortana is a digital assistant similar to Siri on Apple devices. You can type or talk to Cortana to ask questions, perform tasks, and more. Task View and Virtual Desktops You can now launch virtual desktops to keep applications organized; then switch between the desktops with Task View. Action Center The notification area on the Taskbar has been expanded to let you access common setting such as Wi-Fi connectivity, and it will notify you as your computer receives updates or as you get email. Microsoft Edge Microsoft Edge is a faster, more secure browser that includes additional features for annotating and sharing web pages. File Explorer Windows Explorer has been renamed and redesigned with frequently used files and folders at the top of the screen. Settings Microsoft has moved the most common settings to a new Settings app. The Control Panel is still available for advanced settings. Tablet Mode Tablet mode in Windows 10 is for devices equipped with a touch screen. When using a keyboard and mouse with Windows 10, the computer defaults to Desktop mode. If your desktop computer has a touch screen, you can enable Tablet mode at any time. When using a tablet, the computer will default to Tablet mode, but you can switch to Desktop mode, if you desire. 1

Start Menu The Start Menu has been around since Windows 95. In Windows 8, Microsoft replaced the Start Menu with a Start Screen. Users complained, so the Start Menu is back in Windows 10 as a hybrid of the Start Menu in Windows 7 and the Start Screen in Windows 8. Click the Windows icon to open the Start Menu. The middle section of the Start Menu lists most used and recently installed applications. To see all installed applications, click the All apps button at the bottom of the menu. Apps are listed in alphabetical order. Use the scroll bar to scroll the list. Some apps are grouped into folders. Click the down arrow to expand the folder and the up arrow to collapse the folder. Click the Back button to return to the menu. File Explorer To view files and folders on this computer. click the arrow to open a jump list, which shows pinned shortcuts for the Desktop, Downloads Documents, and Pictures. You can add or remove any folders from this jump list. Hover over the item and click the Unpin from this List button to the right of the item. At the bottom of this jump list are Frequent folders. This list dynamically changes to show the folders you most recently opened. Settings The Settings app is a more simplified, easy-to-use version of the Windows 7 Control Panel. Microsoft is moving many of the settings from the Control Panel to the new interface, so there is a single-user experience across desktops, laptops, tablets, and other mobile devices. If you prefer to use the Control Panel, or need a setting not available in the new Settings app, you can still open the Control Panel by right-clicking the Start button. Power Clicking Power, opens a menu showing the power options such as Shut Down and Restart. Depending on your device, this menu may have other options such as Sleep or Hibernate. Account Name - At the top of the Start Menu is the user s name. Click the user s name to sign out, lock the computer, or switch accounts. If you choose Lock, no other user can use the computer without the password for this account or another account on the computer. Under Change account settings, you can add or change the account picture, sync settings, and more. Some options under account settings are managed by the administrator. 2

Start Screen The right side of the Start Menu has a Windows 8 style Start Screen with tiles representing applications installed on the device. All apps on the Start Screen also are found under the All apps menu. Universal apps The default tiles on the Start Screen are called Windows 10 Universal apps. Unlike regular applications, which run only on a desktop or laptop, these apps will run on all Windows devices. Universal apps that dynamically change the information they show are called Live Tiles. Two examples of Live Tiles are the Weather app, which shows the current temperature and weather condition, and the News app, which displays an up-to-date news story. Some Universal apps, such as Calendar and Mail, do not show live information until you set it up and start using it. In addition to the built-in Universal apps, other Universal applications can be installed from the Windows Store. Unlike the Metro apps of Windows 8, most Windows 10 Universal apps have a menu located in the upper left hand corner of the window and controls for Minimize, Maximize/Restore, and Close. Non-Universal apps - Applications you install outside of the Windows Store, such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Reader, or Google Chrome are non-universal applications. You can add non- Universal applications to the Start Screen by dragging the app from All apps to the Start Screen. As you add tiles, the Start Screen will resize dynamically. Customizing the Start Screen To rearrange tiles, select and hold the tile; then drag it to another position. Labels can be changed or added to better organize the Start Screen. Tiles can be resized. The options are small, medium, wide, large. Live Tiles can be turned on or off to remove the live up-dating. Tiles can be removed from the Start Screen, pinned to the Taskbar, or uninstalled. To change these options, right-click the tile, and choose the option from the menu. You can also change the size of the Start Screen by dragging the edge of the screen. Taskbar The Taskbar runs along the bottom of the Windows 10 screen from the Start Menu to the Date/Time on the right, and contains buttons for common applications and tasks. When you launch an application, its icon is underlined on the Taskbar. When you close the application, the icon is removed from the Taskbar, unless it is pinned. To pin an application to the Taskbar, open the application; then right-click the app icon on the Taskbar and choose Pin to Taskbar from the jump list. You also can drag the icon from the Start Menu to the Taskbar to pin it. Hover over any open app s icon to view a thumbnail preview of open windows; then click to select the window you want to use. Right-click an app icon to open a jump list of recently used files. 3

Cortana On the right side of the Taskbar is Cortana, an intelligent digital assistant able to recognize normal spoken language and provide assistance. Cortana is similar to Siri and Google Now. With Cortana you are able to search the web, search your computer, open applications or files, set reminders and alarms, take notes, access maps, get directions, get answers to local business questions, make weight, measure, and currency conversions, track packages, access weather, flight, stock, and finance information. Cortana gets smarter over time, so the more you use Cortana the better she is able to help you. Before you can use Cortana, you must sign into a Microsoft account so Cortana can store your information. You will be prompted to sign into Microsoft the first time you use Cortana. If you do not have a Microsoft account or cannot remember your password, you will be prompted to create an account or reset your password. Once that step is finished, you are ready to begin using Cortana. You can type questions in the box Ask me anything or issue commands by speaking to Cortana using a microphone. There is an option to customize Cortana to understand your voice or all voices. Spoken commands must be proceeded by saying Hey Cortana into the microphone. For example say: Hey Cortana, remind me to go to the grocery after work. Hey Cortana, What is the temperature in Los Angeles today? Hey Cortana, how many kilometers are in a mile. Hey Cortana, show me fast-food restaurants close by. And for a little fun, say: Hey Cortana, tell me a joke. Or Hey Cortana, how did you get your name? The buttons on the left of Cortana are: Home consists of a series of cards, such as Weather and Top News. If a card is minimized, click the down arrow to expand it to see more information. Clicking the card takes you to the web site. To remove a card, click the ellipsis at the top of the card and choose the Hide option. Notebook allows you to enable or disable cards and other settings to customize Cortana. Be sure to click Save after making a change. Reminders list all the reminders you have set. Feedback gives you an opportunity to share ideas, likes and dislikes with Microsoft so they can improve Cortana. 4

Task View/Virtual Desktops In Windows 10 you can create multiple desktops to separate tasks. Click the Task View toggle button. If you have multiple applications running, you will see the apps in separate windows on the desktop. To create a new virtual desktop, click the New desktop button. Click on the new desktop and open applications that you want to appear on the new desktop. You can now switch between the desktops to keep the apps hidden until you need them. To close a desktop, just hover over the icon, and click the Close (X) button. Any open applications will move to the remaining desktop. 5

File Explorer File Explorer is a file management application that allows you to find and manage your folders and files. More than just the name has changed from Windows 7. The default view now opens with Quick Access, which displays Frequent Folders and Recent files. The Desktop, Downloads Documents, and Pictures folders are pinned to Quick Access. The unpinned folders in Quick Access will change as you use them. To add a folder or file to Quick Access, right-click on the item, and choose Pin to Quick access. To remove a folder or file from Quick Access, right-click the item and choose Remove from Quick Access. 6

One Drive is free online storage from Microsoft and is now integrated into Windows 10. This online storage gives you quick access to all your files from all your Windows devices. If you skipped Windows 8 and are coming from Windows 7, you will notice File Explorer has a slightly new user interface that features a Ribbon toolbar instead of the drop-down menu. The Ribbon in File Explorer includes the File menu and three tabs titled Home, Share, and View. The Home tab provides you with access to the most often used file management commands. The Clipboard group includes the standard commands, along with a new Copy path command. Just select a folder, click the command, and the current path is copied to the clipboard. File Explorer has built-in share capabilities, which is new in Windows 10. Select file(s) or folder(s), then click the Share tab at the top of the window, where you have options to email, zip, or print the file(s) or folder(s). You also can click the Share button to share file(s) or folder(s) using a Universal app such as Mail. The View tab contains a host of commands that you can use to configure the way you want File Explorer to display files. For example, under the Layout group, choose Details so you can see when files were last modified. Turn on the Preview pane to get a preview of a file before you open it. If you're coming from Windows 7, here are a couple more differences: My Computer is now called This PC. By default, Libraries won t show up in File Explorer unless you change the setting. To add them to the left pane, select the View tab > Navigation pane > Show libraries. 7

Notification Center/Action Center On the right side of the Taskbar is the Notification Center, also known as the System Tray. The Notification Center has app icons for viewing the battery level, changing network settings, adjusting sound, and more. Left-click an app icon to open its menu. Right-click the app icon to view other options for the app. Some apps are displayed in the tray to show you that they are running in the background and are not fully closed. The tray is not large enough to hold all system tray items, so some items are found by clicking the Show hidden icons (up arrow) button. The Action Center is a new feature of Windows 10. Instead of interrupting your work with updates, they are stored in the Action Center so you can deal with them at your convenience. New updates, email messages, and security and maintenance issues are just a few of the notifications you will see in the Action Center. Just click the Action Center icon to open and read the messages. Click the down arrow to read the full message. After reading the message, you can clear each message individually by clicking the Close button (X) next to each message, or click Clear all. At the bottom of the Action Center are links to common settings, such as Airplane mode, Tablet mode and more. Items in blue are enabled. Tablet Mode Tablet mode in Windows 10 is for users that have a device equipped with a touch screen. Turning on Tablet mode activates edge gestures for closing apps and multitasking. It is Tablet mode that decides whether the Windows 10 keyboard pops-up when you tap on a search box. If your device has a smaller screen, the Taskbar will automatically adjust to fit it. Tablet mode will be turned on by default on tablets. For other devices, you can turn on Tablet mode at the bottom of the Action Center. On a PC laptop/tablet hybrid, detaching or attaching the keyboard will prompt you by default to switch in and out of tablet mode. Clock The clock is for reference purposes only. If the date is incorrect, you can change it under Date and Time Settings. Show/Hide Desktop To the far right of the Notification Center is a toggle which allows you to quickly show and hide the desktop at the click of a button. 8 Press < > + <Spacebar> to take a quick peek at the desktop.

Edge Edge is Microsoft new and improved web browser. With a faster browsing experience, support for Javascript and HTML5, and its new annotating features, Edge is a better experience for users than Internet Explorer. There are still some glitches to work out with SharePoint, and Edge doesn t support extensions that could cause security risks such as Active X or VB. But overall, it is a huge improvement over Internet Explorer (IE). IE is still available and installed by default in Windows 10; and you can quickly switch to IE from within Edge if needed. Here are a few of the new features in Edge. Use Cortana as a search assistant - If you want to use this feature, you need to enable Cortana system-wide, by turning on Get Cortana to assist me in Microsoft Edge option under Settings View advanced settings in Edge. When you come across a topic on the web you would like to know more about, highlight the word or phrase of interest, right-click it, and then Ask Cortana she ll tell you all about it. Make annotations on a web page Edge allows you to add your own notes to a web page. Just click the Make a Web Note button on the top bar. When the drawing toolbar shows up you can begin to draw or write. You can save the annotated page to OneNote notebook or email it using the Mail app. Get rid of distractions with Reading View This feature is only available when single posts are displayed, but it does allow you to hide ads, comments, sidebars, and other annoying distractions. When a web page supports Reading View the book icon is enabled. Save a Reading list This feature allows you to add a web page to your Reading List by clicking on the Favorites icon (star). In the top bar, choose the Reading List tab. Share websites You can easily share content you find online through integrated Universal apps such as Mail or OneNote. Click the Share icon in the top bar (three small connected circles). 9

Tips and Tricks Shake allows you to temporarily minimize all open windows except the active window. Just shake the title bar of the window you want to use. All other windows are automatically minimized. Snap Assist is a quick way to maximize, compare, and restore open windows, simply by clicking and dragging. You can snap up to four windows to each corner of the screen or snap two windows, one to each side of the screen. To Maximize an Open Window: Click and drag the window s title bar to the top of the screen, or double-click the window s title bar, or press + up arrow. To Compare Open Windows Side by Side: Select the window; then press + left arrow or right arrow. To Restore a Maximized or Compared Window: Click and drag the window s title bar toward the middle of the screen, or double-click the window s title bar, or use the + arrow keys. Flip through the stack of windows until the window you want to make active appears on top. Press the + Tab. Flip 3D opens and the windows are shown in a row. Click on the window you want to open. Alternately, hold down the Alt key and press Tab to cycle through open windows. Snipping Tool 1. Type the word, Snipping, in Cortana s Ask me anything box. Click on Snipping Tool. The Snipping Tool program window opens and your desktop fades slightly. 2. Click the New button list arrow and select the capture tool you want to use. 3. Select the area you want to capture. A red border appears around the area to be captured. 4. Click the mouse button to capture the selected area. The capture opens in the Snipping Tool mark-up window. At this point you have the option to mark up and save the image. 10

Sticky Notes 1. Type the word, Sticky, in Cortana. Click on Sticky Notes. A yellow sticky note appears on the screen. 2. Type your note. Click here to discard the note. Click here to create a new note. Right-click a note to display different color options. 11
