Chapter 1: Adobe Plugins Installation Installation Overview The installation of Adobe Plugins for Mac or PC is very simple. All of the steps of installation and are described in this chapter and are presented as follows: 1. Installation procedure for Windows 2. Installation procedure for Mac Note: In this manual, the term KONA Software is used generically and includes support for Io XT and Io Express. KONA models supported include KONA 3, KONA 3G, KONA LHe Plus, and KONA LHi Important: This procedure assumes you have successfully installed the latest version of AJA Retail Software driver package that is a prerequisite for Adobe Plugins installation. Please read the brief Release Notes PDF file that accompanies your AJA Software to guarantee you have the ideal Driver version for your CS6 Plugins. The Release Notes also describe important Features and Fixes. Also, always go to your AJA Utilities (Mac) or Windows Control Panel to uninstall existing KONA software before installing a new version. This will prevent hardware/ software conflicts. Note: Before proceeding, ensure that your capture, editing, or compositing Application Software (Adobe CS6) is installed as detailed in its user documentation. These applications should be installed prior to installing AJA KONA software. The Adobe Plugins package adds required files to your Adobe application directories. Download the latest KONA software from the AJA website or, if that is not possible, use the CD-ROM supplied with your AJA system to install necessary software drivers and AJA s Mac Control Panel. Software updates occasionally become available to AJA KONA owners on our website at: http://www.aja.com/support/index.php We recommend checking for both software updates and additional product information before installation and periodically thereafter. 1 1

2 Installing Adobe Plugins Software The installation procedures for Windows and Mac are described below. You cannot use KONA with third-party applications until the AJA plugins software has been installed on the host workstation. If you add KONA supported applications at a later date and have not previously installed the appropriate plugins, you must run the install program again selecting the appropriate application support software to be installed. Windows Software Installation Procedure Locate the AJA Adobe Plugins Software for Windows download (or CD ROM packaged with your system) and follow the procedure below to install the required software on the host system. This AJA software for PC is intended for Windows 7, 64-bit workstations. The KONA/Io Express Windows Software is divided into the packages shown below. The AJA Retail Software package must be installed first. We recommend you install your desired Application Software. AJA Installer Packages for PC Note: Before installing KONA software, turn off any virus protection and security software that you have installed on your computer. This section describes the AJA Adobe Software package installation. Access the software packages (download or CD ROM) and double click on the AJA Adobe package. Install Wizard The installation program will launch and extract the necessary Adobe plugins for installation on the desired hard drive.

Adobe Plugins Installation Installing Adobe Plugins Software 3 1 Install Wizard Welcome When you see the Welcome page, click Next to view the AJA license agreement. License Agreement Read the KONA license agreement and check the Agreement box to accept. You will be asked to choose the type of installation you would like to perform.

4 Installation Type If you don t have all the KONA supported products installed on your workstation, you may choose to perform a Custom installation (default) and select only the software necessary for your applications. Otherwise, use the Typical installation. The following screens depict the more elaborate Custom installation. Custom Installation Menu

Adobe Plugins Installation Installing Adobe Plugins Software 5 You may deselect an Item for installation by using the pulldown to make it unavailable. 1 Custom Selections Pulldown Menu Use the second level options choose the specific drivers and plugins you would like installed. Disabled selections are marked with a red X. Before clicking Next to install, you can verify your disk space availability by clicking the Disk Usage button. Workstation Disk Usage Display To return to the installation click OK. Click Next to begin the installation. screen.

6 Begin Plugin Installation When the installer has completed copying the Adobe Plugin software to disk, a final screen will be displayed announcing that Setup has finished installing AJA KONA on your computer. Click on the Finish button after the installation is complete.

Adobe Plugins Installation Installing Adobe Plugins Software 7 Mac Software Installation Procedure Locate the AJA Adobe Plugins Software download or the AJA CD ROM packaged with your system and follow the procedure below to install the required software on the host system. The Adobe Plugins package for Mac requires Snow Leopard or Lion OS for operation. The Installation Software is divided into the packages shown below. The specific AJA product software package (KONA or Io Express) must be installed first. (Included in this installation package is the AJA Control Panel.) Next, you will install the Adobe CS6 plugins. AJA Installer Packages for Mac (KONA 3G and Adobe Plugins shown) Note: Before installing AJA software, turn off any virus protection and security software that you have installed on your computer. This section describes the AJA Adobe Plugins Software package installation. Access the software packages (download or CD ROM) and double click on the AJA Adobe package. Install Wizard The KONA installation program will launch and extract the necessary KONA drivers for installation on the desired hard drive. 1 Install Welcome When you see the Welcome page, click Next to view the KONA license agreement.

8 License Agreement Read the KONA license agreement and check the Agreement box to accept. You will be asked to choose the type of installation you would like to perform. Installation Type If you don t have all the AJA Adobe supported products installed on your workstation, you may choose to perform a Custom installation and select only the software necessary for your applications.

Adobe Plugins Installation Installing Adobe Plugins Software 9 1 Custom Installation After Effects Warning Note: Because of the Mac architecture of QuickTime components, AJA does not install Adobe After Effects plugins by default. We recommend that you install the After Effects plugins only for use with Io Express and then you must go to the After Effects Preferences, and under Video Preview, select Computer Monitor Only rather than AJA for the Output Device. After Effects Preferences, Video Preview Settings Because Io Express does not support colorspace conversion, it relies on the AJA Adobe After Effects Plugins to provide software-based conversion necessary for output. All currently supported KONA cards and IoXT, on the other hand, employ hardware colorspace conversion and do not rely on the slower software-based method. Therefore, the KONA cards and Io XT do not need the After Effects plugins installed. Note: When using the AJA After Effects plugin with Io Express, software conversion requirements do not allow realtime RAM Preview.

10 Installation Location Option After setting up your installation content you can click Change Install Location if you prefer to override your system defaults. Click Install to begin installation. Begin Plugin Installation

Adobe Plugins Installation Installing Adobe Plugins Software 11 When the installation is completed, a final screen will be displayed announcing that The installation was successful. Click on the Close and begin using your Adobe applications. 1 Restart Screen If you did not install all available plugins and you later add Adobe applications, you may repeat this installation procedure to install the required plugins. Remember to install and run the applications once before installing AJA software. Re-Installation & Repair If you have problems running your newly installed plugins or need to re-install for added applications, you can relaunch and run the install package. Note: Note: Always uninstall old KONA/Io Express software before installing a new version.

12

Chapter 2: Using Adobe CS6 Applications Overview There are AJA plugins for both Mac and Windows versions of the Adobe CS6 Applications and functions are mostly the same. This chapter will describe the Windows menus and note exceptions for the Mac. Note: Reference to KONA software also applies to Io Express and Io XT (functional exceptions will be noted by specific AJA device). AJA Adobe Software for Mac & PC operates on KONA 3, 3G, LHe Plus and LHi cards and on Io Express, and Io XT at different functional levels. Some setup screens may use KONA, Io XT, or Io Express interchangeably when referring to your AJA hardware. AJA Software for KONA is tightly integrated with Adobe CS6 Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and After Effects applications (not included with KONA). KONA allows a user to bring in supported Premiere Pro CS6 compressed formats and provides plug-ins and drivers that add functionality to the Premiere Pro application. After you install the KONA software on your workstation, all you need to do to begin using it is to become familiar with the AJA plugins and how Adobe CS6 applications access KONA options. The manual you are reading does not provide operational information for Adobe CS6 except as related to KONA operations. Please read the Adobe CS6 user documentation for Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and After Effects, Encore, and Prelude configuration and operation. The chapter you are reading addresses configuration and setups supported by KONA. Topics covered include: Adobe Premiere Pro Realtime Performance Beginning a Project with Adobe Presets KONA/Io Capture Options KONA/Io Playback Options Using Adobe Photoshop Using After Effects Using Adobe Prelude & Encore 21 1

14 Beginning a Project with Adobe Presets Opening Adobe Premiere Pro CS6, you will select New Project from the Quick Start Screen and choose an AJA Capture Format from the pulldown menu, name the project, and click OK to access the New Sequence setup panel with presets or click the AJA Setup button to customize your workflow in the Capture Options panel Premiere Pro Capture Options on page 18. Always use the AJA Serial Control setting and the KONA/Io RS-422 port for capture. 1 Preferences>Device Control>Options Enter the desired value for: Preroll 0 to 15; the number of frames required to start the source machine before capture. Timecode Offset -30 to +30; timecode adjustment (in frames) forward or back to compensate for discrepancies between the source s burned-in timecode and that of the captured sequence. Always verify Premiere Pro and AJA offset settings for Capture and Export are in agreement. Device Control settings made in the Capture window or Export window menus may override Preference settings. Click on the Options button to pull up the AJA Device Control window. Timebase Use this pull-down to select the timecode base supported by your VTR. Base 24 Base 25 Base 30 (non-drop frame) Base 30 DF (drop frame) Base 25 (50 frames per second) Base 30 (60 frames per second) Base 30 (60 frames per second) DF (drop frame)

18 The timecode format is used for both monitoring the RP-188 timecode embedded in the digital data stream and for selecting a timecode offset (if required) for the attached VTR (connected to KONA s RS-422 port). Timecode Source Choose between a separate-channel Longitudinal Timecode (LTC) or Vertical Interval Timecode (VITC) transported in the video signal s vertical interval or include both (LTC + VITC). Note: SMPTE RP 188 defines a standard for the transmission of timecode and control code in the ancillary data space of a digital television data stream. Timecode information is transmitted in the ancillary data space as defined in ANSI/SMPTE 291M. Multiple codes can be transmitted within a single digital video data stream. Other time information, such as real time clock, DTTR tape timer information, and other user-defined information, may also be carried in the ancillary timecode packet instead of timecode. The actual information transmitted through the interface is identified by the coding of a distributed binary bit. Equipment manufacturers can use the meta data for different purposes. Premiere Pro Capture Options In Premiere Pro you can access Capture settings in a number of ways. For initial project settings, go to Project menu> Project Setting> General and set AJA Capture Format and settings. Using the Adobe Capture Options panel, go to Window (F5)>Capture>Settings tab or use the Flydown menu >Capture Settings or right-click in the Capture window for context-sensitive menu. To change settings for the selected Preset, click the Setup button. Using Adobe CS6 Applications Using Adobe Photoshop 25 Using Adobe Photoshop Adobe Photoshop CS6 (not included with KONA) accepts KONA plugins and drivers to closely integrate the KONA/Io Export function into the application. The manual you are reading does not provide operational information for Adobe Photoshop CS6. Please read the Photoshop user documentation provided with the application for information on configuration and operation. The chapter you are reading addresses configuration and setup unique to use of KONA with Adobe Photoshop CS6. With Photoshop open, go to the File pull-down menu and select Export>AJA Export.. 1 AJA Image Export in Photoshop, File>Export Menu The specific options available to you are determined by the AJA KONA/Io device that is installed in your workstation and you are currently controlling. Using Adobe CS6 Applications Using Adobe After Effects 27 When your Export Settings are select, click on the Export button to output your image through KONA/Io. Note: Note that when you output in Video + Key mode (set in AJA Control Panel), Video is output via SDI 1 and the Key channel is output on SDI 2. (This does not apply to KONA 4K Mode operation, see the KONA manual.) Using Adobe After Effects After Effects Real-time Performance RAM Preview should be very close to real-time for HD in After Effects. Please ensure you have the following settings for proper RT RAM preview. 1. Make sure that the Video Format of the AJA Preview Panel in After Effects matches the resolution and frame rate of your After Effects Composition. 2. Next, please ensure that the Resolution setting for Time Controls is set to Full. If not set to Full, the image that the AJA Preview Panel receives and sends to the KONA board during RAM Preview will not be sent at Full Resolution and thus will either be software resized to Full Resolution before sending to the KONA Board for display, or will be center cropped before sending. 3. If RAM Preview is still not real-time, you can try some of the following setting your Zoom to 100% in your AE Composition, making sure the Frame Rate of the AE Time Controls matches the frame rate of the Primary Format in the AJA Preview Panel, and muting audio in the AE Time Controls.
