VPN Guide This guide is for users of personal devices, when connecting from home. SGUL staff who have been issued with an SGUL owned and managed laptop should not use this guide. Pre-Requisites Before connecting to the SGUL VPN, you must ensure the following: All the critical system updates released by Microsoft or Apple must be installed; Antivirus software must be installed and updated in the last 24 hours; The operating system firewall MUST be enabled; Hard Drive must be encrypted (Only Apple for the moment); Features See https://portal.sgul.ac.uk/ for a list of services accessible via the VPN.
Installation 1) Microsoft Windows guide: To use the new VPN infrastructure, you ll first need to download the client to your PC from the SGUL Portal. This is accessible via web browser at the following address: https://portal.sgul.ac.uk/org/lis/computing-services/itav/jrs/global-protect-vpn/ Please download the one with.msi extension. When prompted, click on Save File and select a preferred location on your PC where to save the installer file. Then double click on the installer file that you have just downloaded:
Keep pressing Next in the following installation screens
Once installed, the GlobalProtect control panel will pop-up. When you access the service for the first time, you ll need to specify the portal to connect to. The address is vpn2.sgul.ac.uk Then click on Connect :
A pop-up screen will ask to provide your SGUL credentials and press Sign In to authenticate and access the VPN: After a few seconds the Status will show Connected. The icon shown below will appear on your taskbar, providing information on the VPN connection when the control panel is closed.
A click on it will open the control panel again. On the top right you ll find a cog to access settings: If you experience issues with your VPN connection, click on Settings in the menu and select the Troubleshooting tab, then hit the button Collect Logs : Then send an e-mail to: itav@sgul.ac.uk explaining your issue and attaching the GlobalProtectLogs.zip file that has been generated.
2) Apple MacOS guide: Login to https://portal.sgul.ac.uk/org/lis/computing-services/itav/jrs/global-protect-vpn/ and select the file with.pkg extension: Then double click on the downloaded file to start the installer. Installation window will appear; Click Continue : In case you have more partitions on your Mac please select the one where the OSX is installed, otherwise, just press Continue :
Select just the GlobalProtect as shown in picture, then click on Continue : Confirm, hitting Install :
Enter the admin credentials of your Mac to allow installation: The GlobalProtect agent software requires security permissions to work: click on Open Security Preferences :
The Security & Privacy window will open; Click on Allow : After a few seconds the installation will be completed:
If you wish to clear up some space in your hard drive, hit Move to Trash when asked: The GlobalProtect Control Panel will pop-up automatically at the end of the installation process. At the first access it will ask to provide the portal address: type in vpn2.sgul.ac.uk (NO https:// this time) and click on Connect : When the login window pops-up type in your SGUL credentials and click on Connect :
After few seconds you ll be connected to the VPN. Whenever you need to access the GlobalProtect VPN Control Panel, click on the icon shown below: If you experience issues with your VPN connection, click on the top-right cog in the Control Panel, select Settings :
The following window will appear; select the Troubleshooting tab and hit Collect Logs to generate a file with all the useful information or our Support Team: After a few seconds, the file will be generated: Click on Open Folder and send the GlobalProtectLogs.tgz file that has been generated via e-mail to: itav@sgul.ac.uk explaining briefly the issue you are experiencing.
