Six Key Financial Principles to Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity 1. Pay your tithe and offering first. What I mean is this: the one who sows a small number of seeds will also reap a small crop, and the one who sows a generous amount of seeds will also reap a generous crop. Everyone should give whatever they have decided in their heart. They shouldn t give with hesitation or because of pressure. God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 (Common English Bible) 2. Create a budget and track your expenses. Know your flock well; pay attention to your herds, for no treasure lasts forever, nor a crown generation after generation. Proverbs 27:23-24 (Common English Bible) 3. Simplify your lifestyle (live below your means). Stop collecting treasures for your own benefit on earth, where moth and rust eat them and where thieves break in and steal them. Instead, collect treasures for yourselves in heaven, where moth and rust don t break in and steal them. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21 (Common English Bible) Page 14 4. Establish an emergency fund. But people who are trying to get rich fall into temptation. They are trapped by many stupid and harmful passions that plunge people into ruin and destruction. The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Some have wandered away from the faith and have impaled themselves with a lot of pain because they made money their goal. But as for you, man of God, run away from all theses things. Instead, pursue righteousness, holy living, faithfulness, love, endurance, and gentleness. Compete in the good fight of faith. Grab hold of eternal life - you were called to it, and you made a good confession of it in the presence of many witnesses. 1 Timothy 6:9-12 (Common English Bible) 5. Pay off your credit cards, use cash/debit cards for purchases, and use credit wisely. The wealthy rule over the poor; a borrower is a slave to a lender. Proverbs 22:7 (Common English Bible) 6. Practice long-term savings and investing habits. If one of you wanted to build a tower, wouldn t you first sit down and calculate the cost, to determine whether you have enough money to complete it?
