14 & 15 MAY 2018 SUNWAY CLIO HOTEL Our Consultant: MR. TAN SWEE BENG This training plan assumes that the new trainee have some basic knowledge of Refraction and Reflection of light through media of different density and refractive Indexes. This basic optical transmission theory is currently included in the Syllabus for Physics at SPM level and also included as part of Transmission studies if the trainee has gone through trainings for Certificate or Diploma in Telecommunications covered under the subject of Transmission theories. To build a strong foundation and good understanding on optical fiber transmission system, it is important that the training should start with the theories governing the optical transmission in an optical fiber. It is then followed by the design and properties of the optical fiber and cable, criteria for network and system design, implementation as well as Operation and Maintenance requirements.

Maintenance and trouble-shooting tools (OTDR, Visible Light Source and Fiber Inspection Probe) This module introduces trainees to tools and test equipment required for optical network installation, test and maintenance. It also serves to prepare trainees for more advance courses on actual optical fiber splicing, testing and troubleshooting modules.
OUR CONSULTANT Mr. Tan Swee Beng is a free lance telecommunication consultant; holding a Diploma from UTM in 1975 and BSc. (Hons) degree in Telecommunication from Portsmouth University in England (1982) under the JPA scholarships; he has accumulated more than 40 years of experiences in the telecommunication industry, particularly in optical fiber network design, operation and maintenance. Mr. Tan was among the pioneer group of engineers from Telekom Malaysia who were involved in installation, operation and maintenance of fiber optic systems in Malaysia since 1982 and is widely recognized as among the most experienced and respected fiber optic experts in Malaysia. During his service in TM, he last served as AGM in Network Development Department, HQ where he was instrumental in drawing up TM s first FTTH design and specifications. Upon retirement from active duties, he conducted numerous trainings in FTTH planning, implementation and maintenance for TM engineers as well as its contractors between years 2008 to 2010 in its training center. Between years 2010 to 2014, he was engaged as full time OSP and fiber optic technical consultant to Huawei Technologies South Pacific HQ; where he played a leading role in the network design and implementation for various OSP and FTTH projects in Malaysia (Maxis NGBB), Indonesia (FTTH), Brunei (FTTH), New Zealand (Ultra Fast Fiber using micro duct and air blown cable), Hungary (FTTH) and Singapore under Huawei. During this period, he drew up OSP and network specifications, conducted trainings to telco and their contractors in those countries on fiber optic related subjects, including optical transmission theory, OSP and optical network design, implementation, testing and maintenance and helped to ensure successful project implementation.
