January 23, 2014 Historian Report for: Feb meeting newsletter After the Holidays, we kicked off the New Year with our first Membership Promotion meeting in January and a great Technical Program. This was also our first Lunch meeting and the membership response was great. We hope to have an equally good showing in February!!! Joe DiSanto from Leidos educated us on Enhanced Energy Modeling for Net Zero Buildings. A well delivered presentation and an interesting subject. We also informed that the Chapter would be sponsoring student to travel to NYC for the ASHRAE Winter Meeting. This is a great way to encourage our future ASHRAE members to get excited about the industry that we represent. Please check the other parts of the newsletter for the great program being planned for our February meeting. If you have any important news related to our chapter or any of its members, please forward the information to me via email to Assis M. Flores at email address: assis.m.flores@jci.com. If you need to talk to me, please call me on my cell phone: (315)481 4075. I look forward to seeing you at our regular monthly meetings. Assis M. Flores Chapter Historian

ASHRAE Winter Meeting News: Hello All, Hope everyone had a happy holiday season and has a great upcoming new year. The CNY chapter is proud to announce that our Syracuse University student branch sent eight students and one adviser to the 2014 Winter Meeting in NYC. These lucky recipients received expenses to facilitate their participation to this year s meeting. In the past years our Chapter has awarded students with scholarships. This year we decided to go a different route and offer expense money to students that were interested in attending the Winter Meeting as a means for the students to get a fuller ASHRAE experience. The participation for this event over the scholarship participation was tripled from the previous year. We hope to see the students at our March meeting and get some feedback on their experience in NYC! James Hart Student Activities Chair Peter King, a Central New York ASHRAE Chapter member, spoke at the 2014 ASHRAE Winter Conference about the transformation of a 1913 Warehouse in Syracuse into a Green Laboratory. The building is located at 358 West Jefferson Street and is the home of King + King Architects LLP. Other Local News: The Syracuse Center of Excellence has received funding from the Department of Energy to award to R&D projects which support our work with the Central New York cluster in Advanced Manufacturing for Thermal and Environmental Controls. Funding Opportunity for AM TEC Research and Development Syracuse Center of Excellence invites applications for competitively awarded Research and Development (R&D) funding for projects to support the needs of the Central New York (CNY) cluster in Advanced Manufacturing for Thermal and Environmental Controls (AM TEC). The Request for Proposal (RFP) invites applications for seed projects that strategically target both: 1) needs and opportunities of AM TEC companies, and 2) the goal of DOE s Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) to reduce energy consumption by 50% across product life cycles over 10 years. The seed projects will develop manufacturing processes that reduce energy intensity and improve production as well as demonstrate technologies that use less energy throughout their lifecycles. Application information is available on the AM TEC website: http://amtec.syracusecoe.org/request for proposals.html Proposals proposing or demonstrating a history of tangible and lasting collaboration between TEC firms, regional research, testing, manufacturing assets, and academic resources are highly encouraged. This opportunity is made possible by an award to Syracuse University from the U.S. Department of Energy made under the 2012 federal Advanced Manufacturing Jobs and Innovation Accelerator Challenge. Additional funding is provided by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

Ian Shapiro, founder of Taitem Engineering, has completed work on a textbook for the design of green buildings, titled Green Building Illustrated. Co authored with legendary architect and illustrator Francis D.K. (Frank) Ching, the book is both an introduction to green design, and covers advanced topics such as building shape, unconditioned spaces, heating and cooling, and quality control in green design and construction. Ian wrote the text, and Frank provided the illustrations. Published by Wiley, the book is available at wiley.com, Amazon, BarnesandNoble.com, and other booksellers. Ian has been an ASHRAE member for almost 30 years, and is a frequent contributor to the ASHRAE Journal. ASHRAE plays a prominent role in the book, with repeated references to Standards 55, 62, 90, and 189, as well as other ASHRAE work. Prior to founding Taitem in Syracuse, Ian worked at Carrier Corporation for seven years, in research and product development.

ASHRAE CNY Chapter is Calling for ASHRAE Technology Awards Applications The ASHRAE Technology Award is one of the most important awards in HVAC&R design field; the winners of ASHRAE Technology Awards in society level are recognized on an international scale for successful applications of innovation design. Last year, our Central New York chapter won two ASHRAE Technology Awards in regional level. They are Regional Technology Award of Engineering Excellence for Existing Buildings submitted by Ron Westbrook, PE and Region I Technology Award in recognition of outstanding achievement in the design and operation of energy-efficient buildings submitted by Chonghui Liu, PE. The ASHRAE Technology Awards recognize outstanding achievements by members who have successfully applied innovative building design in the areas of occupant comfort, indoor air quality and energy conservation. Their designs incorporate ASHRAE standards for effective energy management and IAQ. Performance is proven through one year s actual, verifiable operating data. The purpose of the ASHRAE Technology Awards is threefold: 1. To recognize ASHRAE members who design and/or conceive innovative technological concepts that are proven through actual operating data. 2. To communicate innovative systems design to other ASHRAE members. 3. To highlight technological achievements of ASHRAE to others, including associated professionals and societies worldwide, as well as building and facility owners. ASHRAE Technology Award applications are accepted in each of the following categories: I. Commercial Buildings (New and Existing) II. Institutional Buildings (New and Existing) a. Educational Facilities b. Other Institutional III. Health Care Facilities (New and Existing)
