Apr 29, 2009 Good day! I just want to ask how to create new user/group using the VMclient to Exi server. I just installed the VMWare EXi server as a host and access it via VMClient. Also, I noticed that the software that I have downloaded is good only for 60 days, is there any way to extend it for a long period of time? Is the software that I have downloaded will not give me all the features since it looks like its meant only for evaluation? Thanks! Edgardo Morgan 17 posts since May 22, 2008 1. Re: May 3, 2009 11:33 AM Hi, To create new users and groups from VMClient. Login as root. For the extension of the evaluation of the product should be installed every 60 days, again and again. 1

Re: May 5, 2009 2:28 AM in response to: Edgardo Morgan I logged in as root, but i cant see any tabs related to creating the new user, coz i dont want to use root everytime i logged in. could you show me where in the menu bar in creating user/ group, i only see permission and new role. Also, can I integrate it to ldap for authentication? I have created vm, but it looks for the OS, do i need to put the CD on the server itself or I can use the my laptop dvd drive to install the OS for the VM? Thanks for your reply, appreciate! 2

Apr 29, 2009 4. Re: May 5, 2009 2:33 AM in response to: Todd Hazen Can I use my local drives (dvd drive) to install the OS for the VM? or I need to use the server drives? I have read about VI Web Access and I want to try this one, but i was not able to take note the port needed for web access. How to know the port using VMware client? thanks and regards! Apr 29, 2009 5. Re: May 5, 2009 2:51 AM in response to: Edgardo Morgan As a follow up question, what is this dcui above the root? For the nic, does it also mean that every VM has its virtual nic? does this mean that I can assigned ip address specific to VM? if yes, how to do that? 3

Edgardo Morgan 17 posts since May 22, 2008 6. Re: May 5, 2009 7:27 PM in response to: revilo Hi Revilo, Sorry for delaying my reply. 1) Use the VI Client to connect to the ESX server. Select the Server in the left pane, and then click on the Users & Groups tab in the right pane. Create User: Click on the Users button Right Click and Select Add Specify the desired User Name, Password, etc and Click OK Create a Local Group Click on the Groups button Right click and select Add Enter the group name you want and enter the User Name you created above in the User Name field and click Add 4

Click OK to create the group Assign Permissions Click on the Permissions Tab Right Click and Select Add Permission Click on the Add button and select the Group you created above and click on the Add button. Click on the OK button. Make sure the Assigned Role is set to Read-Only and click OK. Users A user is an individual authorized to log in to an ESX Server host or to VirtualCenter. Users on a host fall into two categories: those who can access the ESX Server host Direct access users Users authorized to work directly on an ESX Server host are those added to the internal user list by default when ESX Server is installed or by a system administrator after installation. If you log in to an ESX Server host as root using the VI Client, you can perform a variety of management activities for these users, such as changing passwords, group memberships, permissions, and so forth. You can also add and remove users. 5

ESX Server Integration with Active Directory aving successfully mapped out the steps for Linux/Unix-based hosts to authenticate against Active Directory on Windows Server 2003 R2, I now turned my sights toward integrating authentication on ESX Server with Active Directory as well. http://www.vmware.com/pdf/esx_authentication_ad.pdf 2) You can created vm from iso image (Operating System) or media CD/DVD Regards. The Direct Console User Interface (DCUI) is use for configure VMware ESXi, is called management interface. To use different IP networks there must be physical or a router with capacity of operating with the 802.1Q protocol. Where we have a network only, be it a working one IP range. But we can set up virtual switch are connected without a physical network. Allowing you to work with different VM on separate networks, without serving outside the ESX server. good luck. Re: May 6, 2009 8:28 PM in response to: Todd Hazen Hi, I just want to know if there is really an available VM on Windows OS platform (e.g. Windows Server 200x, Windows XP, Vista, etc.) or appliance that I can use to simulate with my VMWare server? Kindly send me the link where I can download. thanks! Apr 29, 2009 13. Re: May 6, 2009 9:04 PM 11

in response to: Edgardo Morgan I learned from my friend that instead of using VMware EXsi since it will only last for 60 days, use VMWare for server which is FREE. What is the difference between the two, he also mentioned VMware for workstation, now the question is which one is appropriate for my use. I am using it for a large organization with plenty of applications running and users accessing it. Pls. advise for the best product I need to use. Thanks, Edgardo Morgan 17 posts since May 22, 2008 14. Re: May 7, 2009 7:02 AM in response to: revilo Hi. The recommended platform is ESX or ESXi. The VMWare-server is to work with one or two in a VM and test environments. 12

The ideal platform for a company is VirtualCenter and three ESX servers and storage external. VMware ESXi Hypervisor Get a free license for VMware ESXi and build virtual machines in minutes with this easy-todeploy, OS-independent hypervisor. You'll be surprised by the results. Regards. 1. what is a guest operating system? 2. How to use this virtual switch you are mentioning? I want to have network over my VM how to do that? thansk! Apr 29, 2009 19. Re: May 16, 2009 3:05 AM in response to: Edgardo Morgan Does it need to be a bootable disc to install OS (e.g windows server 2003)? I have already click the button "connect cd/dvd 1" with my Vm created but how to browse the content of my local drive? Say, I have created a windows server 2003 and install application on it, how can my users access that application? Do they need to use VM Client always? and how to communicate between VM to another VM to a single host? or a group of hosts? 16

Many thanks! Edgardo Morgan 17 posts since May 22, 2008 20. Re: May 16, 2009 4:31 PM in response to: revilo Hi, You can install Windows Server 2003, Web Edition, Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition or Windows Small Business Server 2003 in a virtual machine using the corresponding Windows Server 2003 distribution CD. 17

Installation Steps If you want to run Windows Server 2003 in a virtual machine, be sure you have a full installation CD for the operating system. Before installing the operating system, be sure that you have already created and configured a new virtual machine. Installing the Guest Operating System 1. Insert the Windows Server 2003 CD in the CD ROM drive. 2. Power on the virtual machine to start installing Windows Server 2003. 3. If you are using the virtual BusLogic SCSI driver downloaded from the VMware Web site, you must takesome special steps at this point in the installation process. As the Windows Server 2003 installer loads, press the F6 key. This allows you to select the additional SCSI driver required for installation. Press S to specify the additional driver. After you specify the SCSI driver, press Enter to continue with setup. 4. Follow the remaining installation steps as you would for a physical machine. VMware Tools Be sure to install VMware Tools in your guest operating system. For details, see the manual for your VMware product or follow the appropriate link in the knowledge base article at www.vmware.com/support/kb/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=340._ Regards. 18

Yes, you need to be a bootable disc or OS image booteable. I have already click the button "connect cd/dvd 1" with my Vm created but how to 19

browse the content of my local drive? happens that does not give the time between the power on of VM and connect the local CD/ DVD. an easy trick when the VM is power on press F2 go to BIOS. Then connect the local CD/ DVD and exit the BIOS, without change. Say, I have created a windows server 2003 and install application on it, how can my users access that application? Do they need to use VM Client always? and how to communicate between VM to another VM to a single host? or a group of hosts? No matter if it is physical or virtual. manages the operating system in a natural way. Windows 2003 is operated with remote desktop. When you work from VIClient, it's like to operate from the console. 20

Regards. Edgardo Morgan Edgardo Morgan 17 posts since May 22, 2008 22. Re: May 16, 2009 5:33 PM in response to: revilo 1) guest operating system is an operating system installed on a host machine (a physical machine) and run virtually on VMware. 2) virtual switch, as implemented in ESX Server, works in much the same way as a modern Ethernet switch. Regards 21

Re: May 20, 2009 3:03 AM in response to: Edgardo Morgan Hi, I have installed my VMWare Exsi to an HP Pro Liant Server with 2GB of physical memory installed, 2x74 GB of hard disks, 2 processors and 2x NIC. Why is it the datastore is just seeing 63GB of HDD? Is there any wrong configurations that I have made during the installation of EXSi? Or there's some configurations just need to undertake after installation? Should be auto detect all physical interface, I/O, drives of the server during installation? Thanks, 22

Re: May 20, 2009 7:04 AM in response to: revilo If I had to guess, it sounds like you took the default raid configuration on the HP server which would be Raid 1 (drive mirroring) for 2 drives in the server. This would show that you only have a single 72GB logical drive in the server Apr 29, 2009 25. Re: May 20, 2009 10:18 PM in response to: Todd Hazen Hi given that this is the case, do i need to re-install the VMWare EXsi or just configuration will do? FYI, I have two 74GB hdd installed to my HP Proliant Server, with this existing physical disks, what should be the recommended setup? thanks, Apr 29, 2009 26. In addition to my queries, I have assigned an ip address with my VM that belongs to the subnet where my physical server ip address belongs to and that is fine, both can reach each other. How about if I assigned it with ip address belongs to another subnet is there any routing need to be done inside? This will result that say two (2) VM in different subnet. thanks Apr 29, 2009 27. Re: Jun 10, 2009 1:08 AM in response to: Todd Hazen Hi I have installed the VMWare Exsi 4 with my two physical servers. Apr 29, 2009 28. Re: Jun 10, 2009 8:38 PM in response to: Edgardo Morgan Hi Edgardo, now I got confused, from VMWare Esxi 3.5, I downloaded VMWare Esxi 4 to upgrade my hosts. I installed it to two (2) servers to experience vcenter. 1. Now, what is this VMWare Vsphere 4? is it an OS or what? 2. and which VMWare vcenter will I download. I have activated my license, 3. how to apply that to my hosts currently with VMWare Esxi 4? Thanks 25

I have downloaded and installed VMWare 4 with my two(2) servers, since I want to experience how to manage vm running on different hosts. 1. what is VMWare vsphere? how is it differ from VMWare Esxi 4? 2. which VMWare Vcenter will I download to manage my hosts? 3. I have activated my license, how I will apply it to my current hosts? Thanks, 26
