1. Introduction The Analog Devices White Mountain Apex-ICE Universal Serial Bus Emulator system provides state-of-the-art emulation and support for the Analog Devices JTAG Family of DSPs. The key features of the Apex-ICE system are as follows: Plug-n-Play USB product Runs under Windows 98 or Windows 2000 Emulation for the industry standard Analog Devices JTAG family of DSPs Rugged high-speed 3V/5V JTAG emulation for Analog Devices DSPs Multiprocessor support Apex-ICE Universal Emulator Hardware and Software 5

2. Requirements The minimum PC host requirements for the Apex-ICE are as follows: Pentium 166 MHz or better Minimum of 32 megabytes of RAM memory Windows 98 or Windows 2000 operating system One full speed USB port Apex-ICE Universal Emulator Hardware and Software 6

3. 3. Installation 3.1. Connecting the Apex-ICE to the PC For specific instructions on connecting a USB device to your computer consult the documentation that is provided by the manufacturer of your computer. In general you should be able to use the following instructions. Important! The Apex-ICE, Analog Devices JTAG Family of DSPs emulator contains ESD (electrostatic discharge) sensitive devices. Electrostatic charges readily accumulate on the human body and equipment and can discharge without detection. Permanent damage may occur to devices subjected to high-energy discharges. Proper ESD precautions are recommended to avoid performance degradation or loss of functionality. 3.1.1. Note: Proper Power-On Sequence 1. Attach the probe to a un-powered target using the 14-pin header. (Never connect an un- powered Apex-ICE to a powered target board.) 2. Apply power to the Apex-ICE 3. Apply power to the target DSP board. 4. Invoke the debugger software. 3.1.2. General Operating Instructions 1. Connect the power supply to a wall outlet. 2. Connect the other end of the power supply to the 5V connector on the Apex-ICE unit. 3. Connect the Apex-ICE USB connector to a full speed port on your PC. The Apex- ICE can be connected to a powered PC. 4. The Apex-ICE status LED will flash when the Apex-ICE emulator is ready for a connection from either ApexControl or VisualDSP. NOTE: The status LED will flash approximately 20 seconds after power is applied and the USB cable is connected to the PC. Apex-ICE Universal Emulator Hardware and Software 7

3.2. Windows 98 Installation The Apex-ICE requires one full speed USB port. Configuration of the board is performed automatically at boot up or insertion due to plug-n-play hardware support. Figure 13. The Apex-ICE Properties Page 8. To install the ApexControl software go to Section 4 ApexControl software. 3.4. Configuring the Apex-ICE Pod Note: This section is optional. This procedure is used to reduce noise related issue. The Apex-ICE pod contains two internal jumpers for reducing noise issues associated with JTAG signals. These jumpers are accessible by removing the four screws on the bottom of the plastic enclosure and removing the top of the enclosure. The jumpers are shown in figure 14. Apex-ICE Universal Emulator Hardware and Software 16

Figure 14. Jumpers There are two jumpers provided to help reduce problems that may arise because of ringing and reflections on the JTAG signals on the target board. These jumpers are not installed when shipped from the factory. Jumpers JP1 and JP2 are used for adding a parallel terminator on the TDO and CLKIN signals. When the jumpers are installed a parallel terminator of 120Ω and 91Ω is connected to the TDO and CLKIN signals. Figure 15 shows how the terminators are connected to the JTAG signals. It is important to note that the target MUST be able to drive a 51Ω load before these jumpers are installed. The DSP cannot drive this load directly, a driver should be inserted between the JTAG signals at the DSP and the JTAG signals at the header. Figure 15. Terminators Connected to the JTAG Signals Apex-ICE Universal Emulator Hardware and Software 17

3.5. Connecting the Pod to Your Target System The pod connects to the target processor through the JTAG interface. The target board must be built with an appropriate JTAG connector. Please note the position of the key pin. The key pin should be used as a guide to connect the pod to the target. Included with the Apex-ICE system are two extender connectors. These extenders are used to connect the Apex-ICE system to a target, which was designed for use with the ADI ICEPAC. These extenders allow connection to the JTAG pins on the ICEPAC header. For more information on designing a JTAG interface refer to EE-68. 3.6. Removing the Apex-ICE USB device from Windows 2000 1. From the Windows task bar double-click on the Unplug or Eject Hardware icon. A window similar to that shown in figure 16 should be displayed. Figure 16 Unplug or Eject Hardware Apex-ICE Universal Emulator Hardware and Software 18

Figure 17 Stop a Hardware device 2. Click on Stop. A window similar to that shown in Figure 17 should be displayed. Figure 18 Stop a Hardware device 3. Click on Ok to display the Safe to Remove Hardware dialog box similar to that shown in figure 18. 4. Remove the Apex-ICE USB device from the USB port and click Ok. Apex-ICE Universal Emulator Hardware and Software 19

4. ApexControl Software ApexControl is a utility used to download firmware updates, reboot the Apex-ICE and run the IceTest utility. The following sections describe each of the ApexControl functions. This manual assumes the ApexControl application is used with VisualDSP ++ software. If ApexControl is provided by other third party vendors, the user should refer to the vendor s documentation. 4.1. Install the Apex-ICE Software Refer to the VisualDSP Emulation Tools Installation Guide provided on the Emulator Drivers CD Section 3.1 Installation. 4.2. Target Type Selection Before the VisualDSP software is used with Apex-ICE a target type must be selected.
