GEN21550 To the future, and Beyond: Re-imaginig AutoCAD Drawing experience Amarjeet Sonkar Autodesk Hemant Jaggi Autodesk Learning Objectives Changing eras of working with AutoCAD drawings over time How AutoCAD 360 is bringing in newer experiences for users - working anytime, anywhere - with/without internet connectivity Let your drawings be in a secured cloud and work with them anywhere on big screens, from the comfort of your mobile devices Newer possibilities with AutoCAD drawings in the modern world, using mixed reality - HoloLens, Surface Hub Description AutoCAD drawing experiences have changed over last few decades with the advent of technologies. With the whole mobile ecosystem, it redefined the ways we interact with our engineering drawings and can access them everywhere, anytime. Microsoft s Windows Universal Platform is redefining product experience on cross-platform devices by blurring the device dependencies and allowing to run the same product across all Windows 10 supported devices. That enabled us to explore newer possibilities for AutoCAD drawing experience on futuristic devices like HoloLens, Surface Hub, Continuum, and IoT devices. In this session, we will be showcasing our explorations, how AutoCAD can change the future of drawing experiences by breaking boundaries of conventional desktop software. How small size devices (Phone with Continuum) are carrying AutoCAD 360 and getting transformed to desktop experience just by connecting any size of the display. Virtual reality CAD exploration, where 3D reality mixes with 2D virtual shapes for a fast, powerful and accurate visualization. No prerequisite required as we are exploring new ways to use and work with AutoCAD drawings Page 1
Your AU Expert(s) Amarjeet Sonkar has more than 10 years of design experience. Starting his career as an Industrial Designer, he worked on all kind of consumer products in various design studios. Mobile (iphone) revolution brought him into App Experience Design, and he successfully designed and released tons of ios apps. In past 4 years, working as Experience Designer at Autodesk, he has worked on some of the most exciting products like AutoCAD for Mac and Windows, Fusion 360 and AutoCAD 360 for Web and Mobile. Hemant Jaggi is an Engineering Manager having more than 14 years of experience working with cloud applications. Hemant has been working with Autodesk for past 3 years primarily on AutoCAD360 Web and Mobile products. Prior to joining Autodesk, Hemant has worked on other products in Web and Mobile domain - panning across E-commerce and SAAS offerings. He is an engineer at heart and loves to drive product initiatives powered by technology. Page 2
AutoCAD drawing experience now and then Autodesk launched very first version of AutoCAD in December 1982, from that time DWG has established as one of the most ubiquitous file formats for CAD in the world. DWG file format doesn t need any introduction to CAD users; it s currently positioned as the world s leading CAD file Format. Over the several years DWG has evolved a lot, starting with PC, now it s available on all possible devices, in fact, it s gone beyond devices where using cloud services multiple users can collaborate on same drawing file. AutoCAD 360, our mobile app is available for all the mobile platforms (ios, Android, and UWP) where users can take their drawings anywhere and access them anytime. Many innovations in drawing experience are done to suit the mobile environment, where input methods are not limited to touch gestures only. Mobile Innovations in Drawing experience for AutoCAD 360 ecosystem, Open GL canvas with magnifier to work with touch interactions On-screen Keyboard Drafting for accurate editing on touch devices Secured Cloud storage support to anytime anywhere file access Simplified complex AutoCAD features to suit mobile environments Page 3
Stylus support and smart pen tool to intuitively work on mobile devices Access your drawing while on the move, even when not connected to internet And much more such features and services added to AutoCAD 360 to give mobility in human experience while working on drawings. Image Source: Morgan Stanley Research This is truly the time of mobile innovation and cloud revolution. Undoubtedly mobile has taken over the PC. In line with that, AutoCAD360 is trying to build a robust ecosystem to enable mobility for CAD users, where devices don t matter when working on AutoCAD drawings. Cloud made it possible where device dependencies are going away. Latest addition to this trend is Universal Windows platform (UWP), where the line between Desktop, Tablet and Mobile is blurring and devices are becoming just a medium to deliver the contents. The newest member of the AutoCAD Page 4
360 family, UWP app runs on any Windows 10 supported device, including futuristic devices like Surface Hub and HoloLens. As windows 10 opens a whole lot of new experiences, we are going to showcase some of the experiments being done with AutoCAD drawing using these new technologies. Microsoft's display dock is another interesting device which allows leveraging full desktop experience when mobile is connected to any (big) size display. Universal nature of app takes the advantage of available screen size and adapts the UI accordingly, some of the coolest technologies like effective pixel make it work and look crisp on every device. Future is exciting but unpredictable. This class is an effort to give a sneak peek into future of AutoCAD drawing experiences. Page 5
