Holy Cross School Laptop Configuration Instructions for Students Grades 11 12 Microsoft Windows 10 Note: As with any version of Microsoft Windows there are several ways to accomplish a task with the OS. Windows 10 has a great little feature called Cortana which lets you type or talk to if you have a mic on your laptop to accomplish tasks within the OS. If you want to learn to use Cortana, please do a search on YouTube. There are numerous tutorials that focus on the subject matter. After you complete the setup below you should review this video on computer privacy and make changes that you feel are necessary. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1kgmcfb2xw In the first part of setting up your laptop we are going to disable UAC, Create a user name for you to use for school, add that user to the Administrators group, and change the computer name to something more user friendly. 1. Power up your computer and login into the laptop with the HCUSER login and the password #HC.us3rPW.. Page 1 of 38

2. Once logged in we want to first do some housekeeping. One of the most annoying features of Windows is the User Access Control. This will be our first task. So, in the area where the arrow is pointing you want to type in CONTROL And then select the enter key. This will bring you to the control panel where you will select User Accounts as shown below. Page 2 of 38

Then select Change User Account Control Settings Once opened you want to use your mouse and slide the indicator to the bottom to Never Notify. Once this step is finished you will be notified that you will need to restart the computer for it to take affect. You should select yes and then close all the windows and restart the computer before continuing. Page 3 of 38

3. Once the computer restarts login in with the same user name and password as in step one. You may need to click on HCUser before you enter the password. Once you are logged back in as HCUser we are going to create a custom login account for you to use. You need to play close attention to the instructions as sometimes you will need to right click and sometimes you will need to left click. Right click the start icon Then select Computer Management Page 4 of 38

Once computer management is open you want to click the arrow next to Local Users and groups then click on the User Folder and then right click the User folder and select New user. The next steps are important and you should write the user name and password down if there is a chance you might forget them. So complete the User name, Full Name, Description and enter a password twice. The user name can be whatever user name you would like to use on this computer. You can leave the description field blank if you would like otherwise an example would be Tina s computer. Then, very important to adust to the check boxes as shown below and then select create. Page 5 of 38

Once you return to the Computer Management Page you want to select Groups in the left column and then double click Adminstrators in the right column. Page 6 of 38

Once you have the Administrators Properties open Select add, then type in your user name that you just created and then select Ok Then Select Ok again Page 7 of 38

After you click ok you want to close all windows and return to the startup page. In the next step we are going to assign a computer name of your chosing to your computer. Right click the start button and click on System Then Select Advanced system settings Page 8 of 38

Once you have the System Properties screen you want to click on Computer Name and then select Change, then in the Computer Name area type in a name you want to give your computer and then select ok. You don t need to get too fancy with the name. You could type in something as simple as TaraHC. You will then get a message that you need to restart your computer. Select ok and then close all your windows and then restart the computer. Page 9 of 38

The following section is critical that you complete. If you do not complete this section your laptop will not have network or internet access once school begins in August. 1. Login to your laptop using the userid that you created with the password that you set. Connect to HCWIFISETUP SSID. Once you connect to HCWIFISETUP a browser will open with the information below. Enter your HC network username and password. If your browser does not open then select a browser from the task bar and open it. You HC username is the same user name from last year (first initial first name, first initial middle name, last name example: Chris Mosley Brown would be cmbrown and the password for all users is 1Holycross). You will change your password in a few minutes. Page 10 of 38

When the screen below is displayed, you should click on, download and install the software to your computer. You may or may not see the screen below. You want to run the software. Page 11 of 38

The software install process will begin. Respond Yes to the question below. It will appear multiple times. The icon may minimize and you must click on it from the task bar. Page 12 of 38

At the end of the Process please select Finish. Once the software has completed the installation the software will connect you to the SSID Holy Cross. When finished, you need to make sure that you are connected to HolyCross. This is the only SSID that will allow you to access your files and the internet without any problems. NOTE: If your computer goes to sleep or into power save mode you must reconnect to HolyCross SSID to restore your internet connection. Page 13 of 38

SECTION 2 Register with the Password Reset Program By registering with the password reset program you will be able to reset your password at any time without assistance. You will use this password to access your email, setup printers for use on campus, and for SSWEB. This is not to reset your password on your personal computer. 1. Open your internet browser and go to the Holy Cross homepage: www.holycrosstigers.com. 2. Under the quick links section click on Password Reset option 3. Enter your username (example: cmbrown), current password (1Holycross), the captcha code and click Login. Your login is First letter of first name, first letter of middle name, and your last name. Page 14 of 38

Click on Click here next to the arrow key to setup up your password reset questions. Page 15 of 38

4. Once you login select 3 questions, enter the answers twice and then click on enroll. Once enrolled correctly you will receive the completed registration screen: Page 16 of 38

Once enrolled you want to change your password. Click change password and follow the instructions on the screen. This password is for access to your email, ssweb, and other school passwords. It is not the password to login to your computer. You are the only one to have that password. You can exit the program once you have changed your password. If you ever forget your password you would return to the same quick link screen and select reset password. You will be asked the 3 questions you registered and then presented with a screen to change your password. Page 17 of 38

RESTART YOUR COMPUTER READ CAREFULLY: After your computer restarts you want to continue to select the user name that you created AND THE PASSWORD. You should no longer be using the HCUSER login and password to login into the computer. Installation of Basic Applications & Office In the next steps, we will accomplish the following: Installation of basic applications Installation of Office and the setup of Outlook READ CAREFULLY Please play close attention when we are setting up these apps as some of the apps during the installation will try to install additional apps or versions that we do not have licenses with. In this section, we are going to use a website to install several basic applications at once instead of having to go to each website separately. To start with we are going to use Microsoft Edge as our web browser to install the basic apps on the computer and then you can use Chrome or Firefox if you want. Before we complete any new tasks we first need a network connection. You want to make sure that you are connected to the SSID: HolyCross. Moving forward, the following assumes that you have successfully established a network connection to the HC network, your home network, or somewhere that you can use Wi Fi. I suggest you either do this from school or home. Public Wi Fi will usually limit (throttle) you to how much and how fast you can download. So let s establish an internet connection by click on the big E in the task bar. Once your browser opens navigate to the website www.ninite.com. This is a nifty little site that will allow us to download several programs at one time. Page 18 of 38

Once you are on the website you may need to scroll down some until you see the Pick the apps you want section from this section, you will check off programs that you want installed on your computer. NOTE: You can always return to this site later and add additional software. In the next section, I have enlarged this area and checked off applications you should install during this setup. Page 19 of 38

After you make your selections you may need to scroll down some to begin the installation of all your programs. You want to select Get Your Ninite. Depending on which programs you selected there may be different screens that you will see. You may be presented with files to save and if so do so to the desktop for now. Page 20 of 38

When you see the pop up that allows you to run the install you want to select that option. You will then see the progress bar open and begin installing the programs. The time required will depend on the number of options you installed. Occasionally, you will see an error popup and ask if you want to continue. If so, click continues or ok. You are wanting to continue the install. When everything has finished a window similar to below will be displayed. Select Close. Page 21 of 38

You should close all your windows and your desktop will be displayed again. You can select the install file that was created and move it to the Recycle bin if you would like. What has happened? So, we have installed several programs on the computer all at once. At this point, before we continue you should RESTART your computer and log back in using the user name you created. Once the restart has completed you should see additional icons on your desktops for programs that have been installed. You now have the option to continue using Microsoft Edge or select Chrome or Firefox to continue to the following tasks. One of the programs that are important that was not available to install from the website we just used was Adobe Acrobat which is used to open pdf files. This is one of the programs that you should be careful installing. So, lets open the browser (I will be using chrome) and navigate to www.adobe.com Once the website is up scroll to the bottom of the page and select Acrobat Reader DC Page 22 of 38

Once the menu section opens then select Acrobat Reader DC BEFORE CLICKING INSTALL you want to uncheck the 2 optional offers or however many offers are displayed. Once you complete this step then click Install now to continue. The next step depends on the browser you are using. When using Chrome, you will see a file downloaded to your computer as indicated below. You want to click on this file to begin the installation. Regardless of the browser, you are looking to execute the installation. So, you may be asked to Run or Save; you want to Run the program. Page 23 of 38

Once the installation is complete you will be presented with the screen below. Uncheck the Launch selection and then click finish. The next application we will install is the Microsoft office suite. So, you want to navigate your browser to: https://login.microsoftonline.com/ Login in using your username@holycrosstigers.com and password. Example: cmbrown@holycrosstigers.com. You do not use hctigers.org to login to this site. Page 24 of 38

Once you login select Install Office 2016 as shown below. Once you select the installation begins you will see another program that will download and then you will need to click on it to begin the install. (Shown Below) Once the program begins the install you will see the window below. This is another good time to take a break if you want. Depending on your internet connection this could take from 5 to 20 minutes to complete. Page 25 of 38

Once completed you will see the screen below and you can select close to complete the Office Installation. We are making progress. So, our next steps are to get your email setup and going. Make sure you are back on your desktop and type in OUTLOOK in the Cortana section and select enter. Page 26 of 38

Enter your username@hctigers.org Click on Connect Select Exchange for Account type. Page 27 of 38

If prompted with the security screen select Yes On the Windows Security screen: 1) Click on More choices 2) Click on Use a different account 3) Enter holycrosstigers.com\username 4) Enter Students password 5) Place a check next to Remember my credentials 6) Click OK Page 28 of 38

UNCHECK Set up Outlook Mobile on my phone, too and click ok. Page 29 of 38

What about printing? Good Question. Since you are no longer connected to the domain you will need to install additional software to enable you to print from the Cloud on campus. Be sure to have Chrome installed and use it for this section. To install the software you want to navigate to https://hct.printercloud.com/ When you navigate to this website using Chrome you will be asked to install an extension. It is ok to do so. Once the extension is installed you will be asked to install the printer client. Click install. The next step is to execute the install as shown below. For IE, it may say Run so you would click on Run. It depends on the browser you are using. Page 30 of 38

Click next to begin the installation, click install, Click Finish Page 31 of 38

You are then prompted to login. Use your HC login and password and select Log In. Some processing will take place and then the page below will be displayed. Page 32 of 38

You then want to select the building and then the printer you want to install. You will then be presented with a window that requires an authorization code. That code currently is bcjmp9 The code is subject to change at any time. The next couple of screens are self explanatory. Page 33 of 38

Once the installation is complete you can type in printers in Cortana and you should see the newly installed printer. You would repeat the process until you have all the printers you will access installed. Page 35 of 38

How about my files? Another Good question. They are in the cloud now. To access your files, we have installed a web based file manager than you can access from the Quick links on the home page called SSWEB for students. Once you click on SSWEB you will be prompted for a username and password. This is your normal school username and password. Once in the file manager system you can access all your files. This system is loaded with features and capabilities. We will be scaling back the options in order not to make it too complex to use. Page 36 of 38

Most important is that you map a drive letter from your computer to the online file system. This will make it easy for you to save new online files. Open SSWEB from your browser Now you want to map a network drive to this location: Use the Windows Key map network drive. and the letter E, then right click on Network and select Page 37 of 38

Once the Network mapping screen appears insert the web string below, make sure you check on Reconnect at sign in and then click finish. enter this string for the folder: https://students.holycrosstigers.com/htcomnet/hcwebdav/ This is the end of the setup. Remember: 1. Store this document in a safe place in case you need it again. 2. Review the YouTube video mentioned at the beginning of this document. 3. Help is always available 4am 8pm CST Monday Friday & 7am 3pm CST on Weekends. http://www.holycrosstigers.com/hc/campus/off_campus.aspx Link can be found under Quicklinks on the website. Page 38 of 38
