Setup Guide for WI-KIT-02 Wi-Fi Hotspot Boosting Kit Congratulations on purchasing the WI-KIT-02, this contains everything you need to be able to connect to Wi-Fi at a camp site / marina / other location. This kit contains a 9DB-OUT, AP-USB-TUBE-N and an AP-R36. The 9DB-OUT is a premium grade antenna designed for outside mounting and includes a mounting kit. The AP-USB-TUBE-N is a long range waterproof USB Wi-Fi dongle with an N-Type connector and includes a USB cable. The AP-USB-TUBE-N connects to the end of the 9DB-OUT, similar to the photo below. Part No: WI-KIT-02 Doc V: 1.0 The USB cable provided with the AP-USB-TUBE-N plugs into the USB port on the front of the R36. NOTE: In order to ensure the best weather proofing, fit the provided cap and plastic top to the end of the AP-USB-TUBE-N after fitting the USB cable, as shown in the picture above. 1 OF 8
The R36 is the small white Wi-Fi router provided with this kit. Ensure you plug the 9DB-OUT into the end of the AP-USB-TUBE-N and the USB cable into the end of the AP-R36 before plugging power into the AP-R36. If you power on the AP-R36 before it is connected to the AP-USB-TUBE-N or before the AP- USB-TUBE-N is plugged into the 9DB-OUT you may not find the wireless network you wish to connect to. Once everything is connected and you have powered on the AP-R36, ideally you will need to use a computer that has a physical network connection (an Ethernet port). This looks like the photo below. It may take 2-3 minutes for the router to start working after the power is on. Find the white network cable provided with the AP-R36 and plug one end of this into the Ethernet port that is closest to the power supply and the other end into the Ethernet port of your computer. Also put the provided antenna with the R36 into the socket at the back. If you look at the AP-R36 you should see 3 blue lights showing, one for PWR (Power), one for LAN (Local Area Network) and one for WAN (Wide Area Network), both the LAN and WAN lights will blink. On the computer you have connected to the AP-R36, launch an internet browser and in the address bar type http://192.168.2.1 and press return. 2 OF 8
You should be prompted for a user name and password by the ALFA-R36, the prompt will look similar to this: The user name and password are both admin, type in admin into the user name and password boxes details and then click OK. You will then be taken to the Alfa Wi-Fi router setup interface, this shows you the status tab by default. NOTE: Connected status shows as Disconnected/Connecting, this is because we have not completed setup yet. It is always a good idea to check the Connected status if you have any problems. 3 OF 8
Click on the Easy Setup Tab. This should look similar to the following screen shot. Click on the USB Wireless adapter option and you will automatically be taken to the next stage of setup, which looks similar to the following screen shot. In the USB Wireless adapter Configuration on this stage of setup you will see a blue button marked Site Survey, click this button. You will automatically be taken to the Site Survey results which will look similar to the following screen shot. 4 OF 8
What you are looking for in this list is the name of Wi-Fi connection that is being hosted at your current connection that you wish to connect to, you will need to get the details of this (including the password or passphrase) from the reception of the camp / marina etc. Click the circle next to the Wi-Fi you wish to connect to and then click the blue select button, near the bottom right hand corner of the Site Survey screen. You have returned back to Easy Setup, you should now see the name of the Wi-Fi you have connected to showing just above Site Survey and other details automatically provided by the Wi- Fi network, similar to the screen shot below. Next you will need to type in the passphrase or password for the Wi-Fi network into the passphrase box near the bottom of the Easy Setup window. NOTE: Please take your time and type the passphrase carefully. You will not be able to see what you are typing on the screen. Also, the R36 does not check the passphrase as being correct before proceeding. So if you find the status showing as Disconnected/Connecting after proving the passphrase, it is possible it may have been typed incorrectly. 5 OF 8
Once you have typed in the passphrase, click the blue next button, just to the right of the passphrase box. You will see that the settings are being saved for a few moments. Next you will see the Wireless Security and Encryption Settings part of Easy Setup. Initially this looks similar to the following screen shot. You can either make a note of the SSID Choice (this is the name of the wireless connection you are setting up and it defaults to ALFA_AP) or change it to something of your own preference by overtyping the entry in the SSID Choice box. NOTE: You cannot use spaces in the SSID Choice, you can use a dash or a hyphen instead of a space if you wish. Next, click the drop-down arrow at the end of the Security Mode box. You will see a list of options similar to the following screen shot. NOTE: To keep your wireless network protected and secure, you should implement the highest security possible. For small networks, it is recommended to select WPA2-PSK. Once you have chosen a security mode, you will need to choose a WPA Algorithm. This chooses the method of encryption applied to your wireless network. NOTE: It is recommended using AES encryption as the most secure option. If this does not appear to allow your device to connect after setup, you may need to change this to Auto (TKIP/ AES). 6 OF 8
Next you need to type a passphrase into the passphrase box. This will be the passphrase to connect to the wireless connection you are creating. This has to be a minimum of 8 characters and can be any combination of numbers and letters. When typing your passphrase, you will have to consider how easy it will be to type on any device that will connect to the Wi-Fi connection you are creating, such as a smartphone and tablet, while at the same time considering that the simpler a passphrase is the more likely it is that someone else could potentially use your Wi-Fi connection. It is recommended you make a note of the passphrase at least initially. If you forget your passphrase you will have to reset the R36 and setup again from the beginning. Once you have typed in the passphrase, click the blue Done button near the bottom of the Wireless Security and Encryption Settings. Again you will see that the settings are being saved for a few moments. This time you will see a message telling you the System is rebooting similar to the following screen shot. This process can take around 2-3 minutes for this process to complete. After this is complete you will see a small window appear that says Wizard - Success!, similar to the below. Click OK in this window. You will then be taken back to the status page which will show a summary of all the options you have chosen. The main thing to look for here is that Connected status is showing as Connected similar to the below and not showing as Disconnected/Connecting. If the Connected status is showing as connected, you should be able to connect any device you like to the Wi-Fi connection you have created and be able to browse the internet. 7 OF 8
Troubleshooting If you are not able to browse to the internet from your connected device even though Connected status is showing as connected, it may be that the Wi-Fi network has been configured to not allow this type of connection. To see if this is the case Try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network from site survey if at all possible. If the Connected status is showing as Disconnected/Connecting, it could be one of the following 2 issues: 1. If the passphrase of the Wi-Fi of the camp / marina etc has been input incorrectly this will prevent connection, Double check the Wi-Fi passphrase especially if it is a mixture of letters and numbers, it can be easy to mistake a zero for the letter for example. 2. Some Wi-Fi networks have been configured to not allow this type of connection. If you see Connected status is showing as Disconnected/Connecting and the passphrase is correct, this may be why. Try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network from site survey if at all possible. If you have forgotten the passphrase you had setup on the wireless connection you created, unfortunately you will need to reset the R36, the reset button is on the bottom of the R36, as per the diagram below. RESET BUTTON: The Reset button is used to restore the factory default configuration. If you hold down the button for 5 seconds or more, any configuration changes you may have made are removed, and the factory default configuration is restored to the 3G Mobile Wireless Router. In some cases it may be necessary to take out the power following a reset attempt if the R36 does not appear to be working correctly. 8 OF 8
