Chiesi Group Case Study About Chiesi Group Founded in 1935 by Giacomo Chiesi, a pharmacist with research aspirations, Chiesi Group is an Italian pharmaceuticals company that focuses on respiratory and cardiovascular treatments and in specialized diseases. The company started as a small local laboratory with only two employees and expanded during the course of 75 years to an international company with over 3,000 employees. Chiesi Group originally became an international presence when it established its first foreign subsidiary in Brazil in the late 1970s. From there, it went on to eventually launch in five continents with 24 direct branches and currently manufactures and distributes successful pharmaceutical products in over 60 countries. Chiesi Group opened 10 new affiliates in the last five years with more than 70% of sales existing outside Italy. Headquartered in Parma, Chiesi Group dominates the field of research and development, largely due to the success of their drugs for respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, neonatology, and cystic fibrosis. The company ranks first among Italian investors in research and development in the pharmaceutical sector, eighth among the larger national conglomerates in every sector, and 14th among European pharmaceutical multi-nationals, according to rankings issued by the European Commission. Chiesi Group was awarded the Research and Development Award from UK Trade and Investment for opening its research lab in Chippenham, England. Dedicated to innovative progress, Chiesi Group filed 193 patent applications in 2010 and obtained 21 new original patents, which added to the intellectual property of the Group. The effectiveness of Chiesi Group s products has helped to enhance the company s reputation and further improve its international standing.

Enhancing Growth and Business Efficiency with a Unified Physical Infrastructure Panduit Enables Chiesi Group's Research and Development Center Built for the Future Business Challenges To accommodate its steady growth and to keep up with evolving technological trends, Chiesi Group embarked on a project to build a new Research Center, which would serve as its headquarters. This Research Center would address increasing R and D requirements and improve overall R and D effectiveness. Chiesi Group decided to bring together the employees and all R and D activities under one roof to establish this new Research Center. The Research Center would house a unique physical cabling infrastructure with the capability of providing connectivity for at least 10 years without revamping. Specifically, Chiesi Group needed a solution that would enable all services on a unified physical network and provide a solid 10 Gb/s and beyond backbone for: Data Voice Video Communication TVCC Surveillance Access Control Building Management System (BMS) Full Wi-Fi Coverage In addition, several new site/building cabling standards needed to be adopted for the new Research Center Campus: Directly owned building or rented building for more than 10 years using Category 6A UTP Cabling Rented building from 3 to 10 years: Category 6 UTP Cabling Rented building for 3 years: Category 5e UTP Cabling To meet the requirements that are associated with building a state-of-the art Research Center, Chiesi Group chose to implement Panduit s Category 6A UTP Data Center physical infrastructure solution. 2 visit www.panduit.com/datacenter

Strategic Objectives Chiesi Group was built on the family s dedication to research. Its mission is to be recognized as a research-focused international group, able to develop and commercialize innovative pharmaceutical solutions to improve the quality of human life. Panduit s involvement with the new Research Center project helped Chiesi Group take this dedication to a higher level. The Research Center represents Chiesi Group s firm conviction to place innovation at the center of the business to nurture the future development of the Group and to improve R and D effectiveness. The project was inspired by the idea of making people the focal point and has been constructed with a specific view: to promote the exchange of ideas. The open-plan, multi-functional and flexible rooms help cultures and competencies get in touch and create opportunities for collaboration and dialogue. Chiesi Group s desire is to be recognized by all our stakeholders as a company that adopts and promotes transparent ethical behavior, at all levels, in line with the norms and regulations that are inspired by Corporate Social Responsibility Principles. Chiesi Group has a strong value commitment to grasping opportunities that are in line with our principles. Moreover, in an increasingly globalized world, the Research Center aims at retaining a local dimension. The choice of Parma, the Group s historical venue, for its locations can provide the added value of people and organizational processes sharpened over decades of activity. At the same time, it aims to collect experiences coming from different worlds: not only the other research laboratories of the Group but, in a broader sense, all the elements that form the network of human relationships and scientific competencies established worldwide in 75 years. The Research Center will not only be Chiesi s house of research but, more importantly, a point of reference for the future of the Group. Panduit Unified Physical Infrastructure Approach Panduit s UPI approach to infrastructure design and development gives companies the ability to connect, manage and automate communications, computing, power, control, and security systems for a smarter, unified foundation. Panduit s Intelligent Data Center Solution, built on UPI principles, was the perfect choice for Chiesi Group s requirements. Panduit was able to provide a Unified Physical Solution with a unique platform to enable all logical and physical systems such as data, voice, video communication, TVCC surveillance, access control, BMS, and full wi-fi coverage. Panduit s Unified Physical Infrastructure (UPI): a Guiding Vision A unified approach to physical and logical systems architecture is imperative for solutions to fully address the need for availability, agility, integration, and security. Panduit has developed the industry s most comprehensive and holistic approach to a Unified Physical Infrastructure and can help enterprises align, converge, and optimize critical systems communication, computing, control, power, and security to build a smarter, unified business foundation. Mitigate Risk Efficient physical infrastructure management enables seamless integration to reduce risks which can occur throughout core systems. Lower Cost Panduit physical infrastructure solutions drive financial advantages to reduce energy and occupancy costs, and help secure competitive advantage. Increase Agility A high level of integration within the physical infrastructure enables flexibility and improved business agility. Enhance Sustainability UPI-based solution offerings enable organizations to meet sustainability goals by driving resource and energy efficiencies across the physical infrastructure. An example of Panduit's UPI approach and its ability to integrate the needs of the entire infrastructure is how it addressed Chiesi Group's lighting requirements. visit www.panduit.com/datacenter 3

Chiesi Group s commitment to the environment is reflected in the artificial lighting. The lighting for the Research Center was carefully designed to include a smart system, which activates it gradually to ensure the most suitable level of lighting in every moment of the day according to the external conditions. Panduit s UPI approach aligns the physical infrastructure to the logical architecture, thus enabling Chiesi Group to address specific challenges, such as incorporating all operations into one facility, and improving R and D effectiveness while enhancing the company s competitive advantages, and increasing company growth in terms of R and D investments, people, and complexity. Panduit Solution Panduit s extensive research in high speed data transmission results in complementary copper and fiber technologies that deliver maximum bandwidth, unmatched reliability, and design flexibility. Chiesi Group chose Panduit s Copper and Fiber Optic High Speed Data Transport (HSDT) Systems to support their efforts of building a new Research Center. Specifically, the following Panduit technologies were deployed: Panduit s copper 10GBASE-T technology, which supports up to 10 Gb/s on copper RJ45 plugs and Mini-Com TX6A 10Gig Jack Modules; and TX6A-SD 10Gig UTP Patch Cords with MaTriX technology. Unified Physical Infrastructure Fiber optic cables that are OM4 ready for 40/100 Gb/s, indoor/outdoor OM4 (Opti-Core ), an Opticom Fiber Optic Enclosure, and Opti-Core Pigtail OM4. The Panduit OM4 Fiber Optic System is designed for very high performance applications requiring extended reach capability and/or cascaded connectivity (i.e., cross-connects) with ample headroom to accommodate more complex topologies. OM4 Systems integrate multi-fiber low-loss MTP and single-fiber connectivity solutions with premium grade high performance laser optimized multimode fiber (with a minimum EMB of 5000 MHzkm) to deliver consistent performance and reliability of mission-critical systems. Panduit PatchRunner Vertical Cable Managers with two post racks, Mini-Com Angled Patch Panels, and Net-Access Cabinets. Based on UPI principles, this solution provided the reliable architecture for improved network availability and scalability in virtualized environments that Chiesi Group was seeking. In addition to Panduit s solution, selected partners for this project were Axis Communications for the video surveillance, Hewlett Packard for the switches, and Cisco Systems for the wi-fi systems. In addition, cabling implementation was performed by Panduit Certified Installer (PCI) A.E.T. Parma. 4

Business Benefits Panduit s Smart Data Center Solution provided a unique physical cabling infrastructure that Chiesi Group can use to address the greater performance requirements of a next-generation Research Center such as enhanced operational efficiency, rapid scalability for future growth, and compliance with industry standards. As a result, Chiesi Group has realized higher asset utilization, improved cost structure, and increased their ability to produce real-time data and services. The final result of this project was three five-story buildings and additional buildings set out in a star design around a large glass atrium, with additional service buildings.
