ISSUE 01:31 7:22:15

One Year of Geekly! Today marks the one-year anniversary of Geekly:Weekly, and if there s one thing we ve learned from manufacturers, software creators, and innovators is that this is the time to reflect on the past year and announce a few upgrades. First, we ll look at each big name we ve covered and what we saw in the past year and what we expect to come in the next year. And be sure to stick around until the end as we will announce and showcase some upgrades of our own and what to expect in the next year of Geekly! Starting off the rounds... LG Our first issue covered the release of the G3, so it s only fitting to see what LG has done in the last year and what we can expect going forward. Relatively quite compared to the other manufacturers, LG had a very successful year releasing flagships that were at the forefront of the camera battles. The G3 was the first phone with a 4K resolution screen and the G4 became the only mainstream flagship to continue featuring a removable battery and expandable memory. What to see in the next year: There have been rumors of a number of variants of the G4, one with a stylus and a smaller screened version. If we don t see those, expect a major upgrade to screen resolution and camera. It s also believed that LG will manufacture at least one of the next Nexus devices, so we ll keep our eyes out for that.

SAMSUNG The past year was one of the biggest for Samsung. The company made its largest leap in terms of handsets with the release of the Galaxy 4, Edge, S6 and S6 Edge. The 4 was a pretty standard upgrade from the 3, but what stole the show was the introduction of the Edge, which featured a curved screen that allowed extra features and options to be placed off to the side. With the release of the S6, Samsung left no update on the drawing board giving us an all-glass premium feeling smart phone with some of the most impressive specs to date. The S6 Edge featured all the same updates, but included the revolutionary curved screen that has become synonymous with Samsung devices. Samsung also announced a series of new ideas that puts them in line with their biggest competition; Apple - most notably Samsung Pay and rumors that Samung is working on its own operating system. What to see in the next year: The 5 is expected to be announced soon, which will carry along the same updates we saw in the S6 but with a PC-rivaling 4 GB of RAM. There s also word that we will see the release of the S6 Edge + a bigger screen version of the S6 Edge, carrying the not too original Plus name. It s not clear what the difference between the 5 and S6 Edge + will be, so hopefully Samsung will make it clear. Also expect to see the release of Samsung Pay and more details on if the rumored Samsung operating system.

MOTOROLA It was the year that Motorola was handed from Google to Lenovo and we were all anxious to what we d see. With the release of the Droid Turbo, it seemed that Lenovo knew what it was doing. A 21 MP camera, 4K screen, 3 GB of RAM and a 48-hour battery life made the Turbo a powerhouse and one of the best performing phones we ve seen. Along with the Turbo, we saw the release of the second-generation Moto X which was quite favored with its array of customizable designs and fast software updates. We also got the release of the Moto 360, the first round smart watch and marked the beginning of a mainstream consumer base peaking interest in wearables. What to see in the next year: The Turbo and Moto X still carried some of Google s genes, so expect to see a full Lenovo release of the Droid and Moto X (Motorola will announce them next week). Also look for an updated Moto 360 as the wearable is due for an update.

APPLE It was a big year for the big Apple. The release of the iphone 6 and iphone 6 Plus was the largest update the company has ever made with an updated screen size and the addition of Apple Pay, the long overdue NFC Payment system. We also saw the release of the Apple Watch, the biggest wearable release ever because... Apple. The tech giant also released updated versions of their ipads and Macbooks and even kept the ipod alive with a few updates. What to see in the next year: A minimal update to the iphone 6 and 6 Plus with the (you guessed it) iphone 6s and 6s Plus - which basically just seems to have an updated camera and the option to get it in the new rose gold coloring. Also expect a new Apple Watch and your standard ios updates.

GOOGLE With the sale of Motorola, Google put its efforts back into its software. The past year we saw Lollipop, the largest update to Android to date and at Google s I/O they announced a slew of new updates to Photos, Maps and the all-impressive Android M. Google is also discontinuing Google Wallet and will release Android Pay... because that s how it has to all be named now. What to see in the next year: Google is rumored to release two Nexus devices, one from LG and one from Huawei. Also expect the release of Android M to happen in the fall, which should feature some updates from Lollipop, but nothing too crazy.

h 3 Big Red to Lau e 20 GEEKLY:WEEKLY 2:06:15 It was obviously a big year for Geekly:Weekly because it was our first! Covering the latest technological news every week (well, most weeks) was incredibly fun and a great learning experience. On top of the weekly coverage, we also had the great opportunity to cover CES 2015 with Viva la Geek. Looking back it was one great year. What to see in the next year: Looking forward, the next year will see a number of updates. So let s take a look at Geekly:Weekly 2.0: Change i

With the new face of Geekly:Weekly, we d thought we d also introduce the faces (old and new) of the Geeks that make it happen: PRESTON BOWMAN - Co-Founder, Editor-in-Chief Geekly:Weekly started as an idea that David Jarvey and myself had to create a way to keep teammates up to date on the latest wireless and technology news. With a growing passion in technology and information and a set of graphic design skills, I quickly became a bigger geek in the eyes of my peers... more than I already was. My weapon of choice is currently the Nexus 6 because I love me some quick and fancy updates. DAVID JARVEY - Co-Founder, Writer, Emerging-Tech Genius What makes me geeky is feeling the need to always be on top of technology news no matter what is. I always have the urge to figure things out so I have the ability to help others fix a problem. Being a video game junkie always helps direct you towards to the whole geekness of things to... I currently have the Samsung Galaxy S6 because the screen is amazing and the camera on this beast is the best I ve seen on a phone in a long time. KEVIN HAUGEN - Writer I graduated from UW-Milwaukee this past May with a degree in journalism with an emphasis on print and online publications. I started my college career at UW-Waukesha than transferred to UW-Milwaukee so I could get my bachelor s degree. While at UW-Milwaukee I contributed to Media Milwaukee, which is a student-run website. The source of my geekness is my huge video game collection. I also am a pretty big marvel comic book nerd. MIKE MANTHEI - Writer - Teammate Central I ve been with GKB since March of last year. My background isn t really Wireless related at all, in fact when I was hired I went in basically blind. Prior to wireless I had worked as a firefighter and paramedic full time for 5 years. My phone is an LG G3, my first LG product, and I love it. My geekness comes from my constant need to know. I hate not having answers, so I m always pressing for more information. I can spend hours Googling life s mysteries.
