Prescriptive Approach Set of predefined efficiency requirements that must ALL be met or exceeded Applies to various building components Simplest approach, but less flexible Establishes baseline for Standard building budget under Performance Approach

Performance Approach Also known as the computer method Requires use of Energy Commission approved software Most flexible approach, allows for trade-offs Proposed energy budget Standard energy budget Most new construction uses this approach Modeling, budgets, assumptions are located in Residential and Nonresidential ACM Reference Manuals

2016 Energy Standards Updates

2016 Updates Nonresidential Higher HVAC efficiencies More insulation, especially for metal framing More efficient lighting to meet lower LPD allowances HVAC door & window interlocks Direct Digital Controls (DDC) Elevator and moving walkway/escalator compliance

2016 Updates Residential All high efficacy lighting More LED or JA8 labeled lighting High Performance Attics and Walls Insulation at ceiling and roof Continuous insulation for walls; larger framing Photovoltaic panels Instantaneous Water Heaters
