Major Renovation Work in Revit The Survival Guide Jason Boehning Building Content Manager @jasonboehning Join the conversation #AU2016
Class summary Understand the process of using Revit for an existing building that will be renovated.
Key learning objectives At the end of this class, you will be able to: produce rapid-energy models in Revit to gain renovation work model existing conditions quickly and accurately use existing conditions in Revit to produce better designs in less time manage phases and phase filters to control the display of drawings to match company standards
Session roadmap Why use Revit for renovation projects? Early energy analysis Understanding phases in Revit Setting up projects in Revit Modeling existing conditions Modeling new design Tips and Tricks

New BIM Technologies Pericept BIM VP Model-based photogrammetry Ability to superimpose model on images from the field Visual differencing between site and model Support for accurate 3D measurements
Dynamo
Early Energy Analysis - Model Focus on building: envelope systems (energy consumption) usage/schedule Use thermal block zoning Use spaces (more parameters)
Early Energy Analysis - Model Scenario 1 Existing as-built drawings available Import images/cad files and trace exterior Field visit to spot check Scenario 2 No existing drawings available Use Google Earth/map application Field visit to spot check
Early Energy Analysis - Model Field visit to verify usage/systems Obtain energy bills (if possible) Run simulations!
Introducing Phases
Introducing Phases Phases allow a project to be aware of time Each phase represents a time period in the life of a project Must understand four concepts Phase of the view Phase status of model elements Phase filter assigned to the view Graphic overrides assigned through the phase filter
Introducing Phases Each view has two Phasing parameters: Phase Phase Filter Two phases by default: Existing New Construction Elements are created in the Phase of the view
Introducing Phases Each element has two Phasing parameters: Phase Created Phase Demolished Combinations result in four phase statuses: Existing Demolished New Temporary
Existing Element Phase Created: Existing Phase Demolished: None
Demolished Element Phase Created: Existing Phase Demolished: New Construction
New Element Phase Created: New Construction Phase Demolished: None
Temporary Element Phase Created: New Construction Phase Demolished: New Construction
Phase Filters Each view has a Phase Filter parameter to control the display of elements based on their phase status.
Show All Shows all phase statuses in the view
Show Complete Shows New elements plus Existing elements that remain
Show Previous + Demo Shows elements from the previous phase plus Demolished elements
Phase Filters Phase filter options for each phase status: By Category Overridden Not Displayed
Phasing Graphic Overrides When a phase status is set to Overridden for a phase filter, the graphic display for all elements of the phase status are controlled by the Graphic Overrides.
Understanding Phases in Revit - Demo
Setting up projects in Revit
Project Setup Create project Use template with settings and phase-specific views Transfer Phase Settings Working with linked models Phase mapping Visibility/Graphic Overrides Create plan for visibility and graphic display
Controlling the Visibility of Elements Start with high-level controls and move down
Controlling Graphic Display of Elements Start with high-level controls and move up
Modeling existing conditions
Modeling Existing Conditions Only model what is needed Use other methods to show existing to remain and demolished elements Filled regions Color fill legends
Modeling Existing Conditions Scenario 1 Existing as-built drawings available Import images/cad files and trace Field visit to spot check (if needed) Scenario 2 No existing drawings available Option 1 Laser scanning Option 2 Photogrammetry Option 3 Field measurements
Laser Scanning Distance measurements of laser beams Creates a point cloud Extremely precise Laser scanners can be rented or purchased Process can be outsourced
LiDAR LiDAR Light Detection And Ranging Similar to laser scanning (less precise) LiDAR sensors provide a cheaper alternative to laser scanners Sensors can also be mounted on planes, helicopters, UAVs, or rovers
Laser Scanning 101 Workflow Data Capture Output
Laser Scanning 101 Laser Scanners LiDAR Sensors
Laser Scanning 101 Typically includes software to create point cloud from scan(s)
Photogrammetry Use of photography to measure distances between objects Creates a point cloud Less precise than laser scanning Cheaper than laser scanners Process can be outsourced
Photogrammetry 101 Workflow Data Capture Data Processing Output
Photogrammetry 101 Data capture UAV* - exteriors Rover interiors *Do not operate a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) without the proper registration and approval

Photogrammetry 101 Data processing software ReCap 360 Pro Pix4D PhotoScan OpenDroneMap ContextCapture
Photogrammetry 101 Data processing software Software Price Dataset Size OS Recap 360 PRO Low 250 images Cloud Pix4D Medium 2000 images* Win, Mac (Beta), Linux PhotoScan Low 10000 images* Win, Mac, Linux ContextCapture High no limit Win, Mac OpenDroneMap Open source - Ubuntu
Output Point Cloud Videos courtesy of:
Point Cloud to Revit Model Link Point Cloud to Revit Trace/snap to points to create geometry
Field Measuring Field Measuring = interns + tape measurers Use hand-drawn sketch and measurements to create model
Modeling new design
Modeling New Design Accurate existing conditions aid in modeling the new design Pay attention to phase statuses Stick to the BIM approach Parametric modeling Keep all information in the model
Tips and Tricks
Rooms and Spaces Behave different than other model elements Only contain a Phase parameter Only appear in the phase in which they were created Problems arise in demolition views Phase is New Construction Need to show Existing rooms/spaces
Rooms and Spaces Workaround for Demo Views Turn off rooms/spaces in demo view Create an existing view that only shows existing rooms/spaces and their tags Overlay existing room/space view on demo view Only show viewport for existing room/space view (no title)
MEP Connections Connecting a new duct/pipe/conduit/cable tray to an existing one will make the existing one new. (*Only when they are of the same size and at the same elevation) Problems can arise when new elements are connected to existing.
MEP Connections Solution to connect new to existing Add a union
Dynamo If you are not a Dynamo user, become one!
