Preface Preface This manual has been written for technicians involved in the commissioning of Enraf gauges with the RS-232C or RS-485 communication option. A description preceding the technical procedures gives the technical information necessary to understand its functioning. It is recommended to read this description prior to performing any of the procedures. For installation and commissioning of the Enraf gauges, please refer to the Installation guides and the Instruction manuals of the related instruments. This manual describes the optional function of the RS-232C / RS-485 communication channel. For an overview, refer to the list of related documents in chapter 5. Safety and prevention of damage Safe execution of the procedures in this manual requires technical experience in handling tools, and knowledge of safety regulations in handling electrical installation in hazardous environments. "Warnings", "Cautions", and "Notes" have been used throughout this manual to bring special matters to the immediate attention of the reader. A Warning concerns danger to the safety of the technician or user; A Caution draws attention to an action which may damage the equipment; A Note points out a statement deserving more emphasis than the general text, but does not deserve a "Warning" or a "Caution". The sequence of steps in a procedure may also be important from the point of view of personal safety and prevention of damage; it is therefore advised not to change the sequence of procedural steps or alter a procedure. Legal aspects The information in this manual is copyright property of Enraf B.V., The Netherlands. Enraf B.V. disclaims any responsibility for personal injury or damage to equipment caused by: Deviation from any of the prescribed procedures; Execution of activities that are not prescribed; Negligence of the general safety precautions for handling tools, use of electricity and microwave radiation. EC declaration of conformity This instrument is in conformity with the protection requirements of EC Council Directive 89/336/EEC. The CE conformity marking fulfills the provisions of EN 50081-2 Generic Emission Standard EN 50082-2 Generic Immunity Standard when installed, maintained and applied according to requirements as specified in this manual. Additional information Please do not hesitate to contact Enraf or its representative if you require additional information. Instruction manual XPU-2 option RS-232C / RS-485 Page 3

Introduction 1 Introduction The optional RS-232C or RS-485 communication on the XPU-2 board can be used with the Enraf series 854 level gauges and 873 SmartRadar for modem connection or for indoor installation. The RS-232C communication is used between the instrument and one other user (DCE). This can be a modem or any computer system using RS-232C. The communication is half duplex. The RS-232C communication is limited to 15 m (50 ft) distance and handshake signals are not supported. With RS-485 communication a multi drop bus structure is possible with maximum 31 slaves and one master. The communication is half duplex. The maximum distance with RS-485 is approximately 1000 m (300 ft) at 9600 baud. When the option of RS-232C or RS-485 communication is available, the Enraf field bus communication and the analog (4 20 ma) level output can not be used. For the protocol of the gauge communication, please refer to the protocol manuals of the related instruments. Page 4

Commissioning 2 Commissioning The commissioning of the optional items for the RS-232C or RS-485 communication shall be performed after the basic settings have been given to the instrument. The items mentioned in this section reside under protection level 2. 2.1 Settings for the optional communication channel Item Name Description BC Address byte CIU emulation One ASCII character (see below). This item selects the emulated CIU address, used in the protocol. If no address is used, the item contains the - character. The following selections can be made: - for no CIU address 0 9 for CIU address 0 9 BI Baudrate optional Four ASCII characters (see below). communication channel This item selects the baudrate of the optional communication channel. The following selections can be made: 1200 for 1200 baud 2400 for 2400 baud 4800 for 4800 baud 9600 for 9600 baud 19K2 for 19200 baud TH Turn around delay host Two ASCII digits (see below). The turn around delay time can be selected between 10 and 900 msec. to adapt the connected equipment for switch over time between sending and receiving. The following settings can be given: 01 for 10 msec. turn around delay 02 for 20 msec. turn around delay 03 for 30 msec. turn around delay 04 for 40 msec. turn around delay 05 for 50 msec. turn around delay 06 for 60 msec. turn around delay 07 for 70 msec. turn around delay 08 for 80 msec. turn around delay 09 for 90 msec. turn around delay 10 for 100 msec. turn around delay 20 for 200 msec. turn around delay 30 for 300 msec. turn around delay 40 for 400 msec. turn around delay 50 for 500 msec. turn around delay 60 for 600 msec. turn around delay 70 for 700 msec. turn around delay 80 for 800 msec. turn around delay 90 for 900 msec. turn around delay Instruction manual XPU-2 option RS-232C / RS-485 Page 5

Commissioning 2.2 Data items Item Name Description PS Protection status Three ASCII digits; either 0, 1 or 2. This data item informs the user about the current protection levels entered by the different channels. Position 1: protection level for the EN field bus (not available) Position 2: Position 3: Example: 020 protection level for the 847 PET protection level for the optional communication channel This means: Protection level 2 entered by PET (IR channel) and no protection level entered by the optional communication channel Page 6

Item description 4 Item description The items, related to the optional communication channel, are described in this chapter. The items can be of the type N (Novram) or D (Data). Novram items are stored in the NOVRAM on the XPU-2 board in the instrument (for instance: baudrate optional communication channel, item BI). Data items contain measuring results or status information (for instance: protection status, item PS). Data items are not stored in NOVRAM and are lost after a reset or power down. The protection level refers to the protection level 1 or 2 password which is required to issue them. Item: BC Address byte for CIU emulation Type: N Protection: level 2 Entry format: one ASCII character; either: -, 0, 1,... 9 Default value: - In the protocol manuals for the Enraf 854 level gauges and the 873 SmartRadar is stated that a so called CIU address is required in the records to (and from) the instrument. This is valid with the communication via the model 858 CIU and Enraf field bus to the instruments. With the optional RS-232C and RS-485 communication channel, there is no need for a CIU. The user has the choice, either to follow the protocol manual and then the CIU address needs also to be specified in the instrument (by item BC), or to exclude the CIU address from the records. In the latter case, item BC is set to: -. Item: BI Baudrate optional communication channel Type: N Protection: level 2 Dimension: baud Entry format: four ASCII characters Default value: 19K2 This item selects the baudrate of the optional communication channel. The following baudrates are supported: 1200 : 1200 baud 2400 : 2400 baud 4800 : 4800 baud 9600 : 9600 baud 19K2 : 19200 baud Item: PS Protection status Type: D Protection: no write access Default value: 000 This item reflects the current protection level, entered on the different communication channels. Position 1 : protection level for the Enraf field bus (not applicable) Position 2 : protection level for the PET (IR channel) Position 3 : protection level for the optional communication channel Example: 021 which means: - protection level 2 entered by the PET - protection level 1 entered on the optional communication channel. Item description Item: TH Turn around delay host Type: N Protection: level 2 Dimension: 0.01 seconds Entry format: two ASCII digits Default value: 01 The host turn around delay time is the time between the last received character on the optional communication channel and the start of the transmission of the response. The possible turn around delay time settings are listed in the table below (tolerance: +10 / -0 msec.). It is recommended to set the turn around delay as low as possible (minimum 10 msec.). Higher turn around delay times causes longer response time from the instruments and are generally unwanted. Only when the host system require longer turn around time delays (for instance when the instrument is connected via a modem to a host), then the turn around time can be set according to the required modem turn around time (time to switch over from sending to receiving).
