Conventions Release Process for ProVision Software Conventions Starting with version 15, the format for ProVision Software version numbering is: Platform.xx.yy.zzzzm (e.g., K.15.04.0008m), where: Platform: switch platform software with one or two letters xx.yy: major version number zzzz: minor version number m: Presence of suffix letter m indicates Maintenance branch. Absence of suffix letter indicates CPE branch. Before version15, the format for ProVision version numbering is: Platform.xx.yym (for example: K.14.58m) Platform: switch platform software with one or two letters xx: major version number yy: minor version number m: Presence of suffix letter m indicates Maintenance branch. Absence of suffix letter indicates CPE branch 1

Overview Overview For ProVision software, a new major software version containing enhancements and defect-fixes is d approximately every four to six months. When this new software is d, a Current Product Engineering (CPE) branch is created for that software. Starting with software version 15.16, this milestone is called Software General Availability (SW ) as shown in Figure 1 (using the K platform software as an example). Each CPE branch normally live for approximately 12 to 18 months. From software version 15.07 to 15.15, there were two stages in each CPE branch: Software Early Availability (SW EA) and Software General Availability (SW ) as shown in Figure 2 (using the K platform software as an example). K.xx.yy Defect fixes (K.xx.yy.zzzz) K.xx.yy CPE K.xx.yy+1 Defect fixes (K.xx.yy+1.zzzz) K.xx.yy+1 CPE K.xx.yy+2 K.xx.yy+2 CPE Defect fixes (K.xx.yy+2.zzzz) Figure 1: Software General Availability (SW ) on each software using the K platform software as an example 2

Overview K.xx.yy EA K.xx.yy CPE Defect fixes (K.xx.yy.zzzz) K.xx.yy+1 EA Defect fixes (K.xx.yy+1.zzzz) K.xx.yy+1 CPE K.xx.yy+2 EA K.xx.yy+2 CPE Defect fixes (K.xx.yy+2.zzzz) Figure 2: Software Early Availability (SW EA) and Software General Availability (SW ) on each software using the K platform software as an example Approximately once every 18 months, a Maintenance branch is created from an existing software as shown in Figure 3. HP recommends that users familiarize themselves with the features of each branch and stage as stated in this document. Understanding the benefits and limitations associated with each branch and stage is the key to selecting the software version that is most suitable for each user s specific requirements and environment. Maintenance Branch currently is available only for 8200, 5400, 6600, 6200, 3800, 3500yl, and 3500 switches (i.e., K, and KA software) K Maintenance Branch (3 yrs) K.xx.yy K.xx.yy.zzzzm K Maintenance Branch (3 yrs) K.xx.yy+n K.xx.yy+n.zzzzm Figure 3: Maintenance Branch using the K platform software as an example 3

CPE Branch: Early Availability Stage Note For 8200, 5400, 6600, 6200, 3500yl, and 3500 switches, the Maintenance branches first started with version K.13.63m. For 3800 switches, the Maintenance branches first start with version KA.15.10.0013m. CPE Branch: Early Availability Stage (15.07 to 15.15 only) For each major of ProVision software, a new CPE branch is created with an Early Availability stage. Customers can access the notes and download the Early Availability software from the software download page. Customer s contact information will be requested for HP to be responsive and to communicate any issues with these early adopters. In this stage, after the initial, minor s that contain defect fixes will follow. Early Availability software is recommended for use in: Lab testing prior to upgrading a production network Evaluation of new features prior to general deployment Evaluation with specific applications prior to wider deployment For software that was d as Early Availability, the next stage is General Availability. CPE Branch: General Availability Stage After each major of ProVision software, a new CPE branch is created with a General Availability () milestone. Customers can access the notes and download the software from the software download page. During the General Availability stage, minor s that contain defect fixes may follow. HP recommends that as a best practice customers evaluate this software prior to deployment in a production network. 4

Maintenance Branch Maintenance Branch (for switches based on K or KA software only) For 8200, 5400, 6600, 6200, 3800, 3500yl, and 3500 switches (i.e., K and KA software), a Maintenance branch is created from a CPE branch approximately once every 18 months. The software has gained maturity over that period of time, and subsequent minor s on this branch will focus on defect fixes. Any changes in this branch must be low risk and their impacts well-understood. This means that some of the defect fixes will be added to the Maintenance branch later than the CPE branch. Also, the Maintenance branch may not contain all the defect fixes in the CPE branch. Each Maintenance branch will be active for three years, starting from the time each branch is first created. This reduces the user s need to frequently evaluate, qualify, and deploy new major software s. The first Maintenance will be based on a specific on the CPE branch and might have the same minor version number, except that the Maintenance will have an m suffix. Since the Maintenance and CPE s may contain different defect fixes and on different schedules, the minor version numbering in the two branches will not be synchronized after the first Maintenance. Currently, there are no Maintenance branches for 2920, 2915, 2910, 2620, 2615, or 2530 switches. CPE vs Maintenance Branch (for switches based on K or KA software only) HP recommends that customers consider the characteristics of the different software s outlined above before choosing their software deployment. In general, Maintenance branch software is recommended when: Users want to standardize on a after it has gained some maturity Users want to remain on a for an extended period of time to reduce the time and expense of qualifying a new Users do not need to use new hardware or features that are not supported on the Maintenance Branch CPE branch software is recommended when: Specific defect fixes not on the Maintenance branch are needed Specific enhancements or new features not on the Maintenance branch are needed Support for new hardware not on the Maintenance branch is needed 5

Migration between CPE and Maintenance Branches Migration between CPE and Maintenance Branches (for switches based on K or KA software only) Within the same major, users on the CPE branch can choose to migrate to the Maintenance branch. If the CPE and Maintenance branch are on different major s (e.g., K.15.03.xxxx and K.15.04.xxxxm), users on the CPE branch can migrate to the Maintenance branch if the on the Maintenance branch has the required feature and hardware support. If users on the Maintenance branch need the new features and hardware, they have the following options: Migrate to a CPE branch that has the features or hardware support. (Be aware that the CPE branch has shorter longevity and contains additional changes in features and hardware support.) Migrate to the next Maintenance branch that has the desired features and hardware support. (Maintenance s are targeted to occur approximately once every 18 months). 6
