Ethos Fontfamily Introduction Ethos is a contemporary serif fontfamily. It comes in 36 fontstyles with true italics and a huge bunch of opentype features like small caps, ligatures, nominators and denomiators, fractions and many more. Its x-height is pretty high, which makes it legible even on small fontsizes. Above that, the lighter weights have a rather low-contrast linestyle, which improves the legibility on display application especially on smaller sizes. On larger fontsizes, the typeface stands out with a distinctive character of geometrically shaped letters with soft rounded corners. Each fontface contains 500+ glyphs, supporting a huge amount of languages, mathematical operators, symbols and punctuations. 3
Why ethos? Typography is human. Forthright, inspiring & faithful. A personality with ethos, distinctive yet anonymous like the voice behind the text. The famous Greek philosopher Aristotle used the terms pathos, logos and ethos to describe three modes of arguing a point. Pathos, the Greek word for experience and a word that implied suffering is a mode intended to stir up emotions in an audience. Logos, the Greek word for word, employs logic and facts to make a statement. Ethos, the Greek word for character, emphasizes the integrity and expertise of the speaker as the basis for the argument. Many advertisers have found the use of ethos to be an effective method of communicating their messages. With its distinctive look, the font has a strong character needed to be a significant typeface for a wide field of application. 5
The concept. The Good, the Bad and the Overused. A typographic definition of the Anti-Edge. Whether you like it or not, it s hip to be square. The square is the current darling of the design world and it s already becoming almost cliche to incorporate them in a redesign or new product. But rectangles and sharp edges have no meaning without a counterpart you can find in well balanced typography with softened strokes for example. 7
We are Conditioned for Rounded Corners. We have an eye for rounded corners because they are more organic to how we use everyday objects in the physical world. Rounded corners are everywhere. And as children, we quickly learn that sharp corners hurt and that rounded corners are safer. Other experts say that rectangles with rounded corners are easier on the eyes than a rectangle with sharp edges, because they take less cognitive effort to visually process. The fovea is fastest at processing circles. Processing edges involves more neurological image tools in the brain. Thus, rectangles with rounded corners are easier to process, because they look closer to a circle than a regular rectangle. 9
The concept. The distinctive bend of the stroke can be found on several letters. It is derived from the serifs and gives a nice and well balanced impression. 11
The concept. The O-Shape is always the first letter to draw. Palatino Corporate A Times New Roman DIN Pro Ethos It s not just a circle. Depending on the way this stroke bends, the other glyphs will have to be adapted to this shape. Basically you could say, the "O will define all curves, the contrast of lines and your fonts character at all. When we compare different fonts, we can see various styles within a single letter. As seen above, Ethos combines a modern compact shape, derived from the DIN Pro, with a Corporate A linestyle and Times New Roman spacing and text flow for good readability on body copy application. The slightly rectangular shape gives a modern impression, while the measure is optimised for reading. In addition, the contrast of lines is well balanced between a classical serif and a modern sans. 13
The concept. A font like the Corporate Antiqua has a calligraphic character. The strokes are optically corrected, which causes a twitchy appearance, especially on the lower case letters. In contrast to this, Ethos is based on geometrical shapes. Its ascenders and descenders perfectly adapt to the baseline, median and caps height. Therefore, the appearance is smooth in particular due to an eased x-height. Font: Corporate A Light Font: Ethos Light 15
The designprocess.
Digital or Analog? The concept is based on drawings, but when it comes to detail, every line has to be reworked. Thats why all the letters are composed out of different parts like stem, brackets, terminal, ascender etc., while the shape is generally based on optical proportion derived from its drawings. The end result is a supremely consistent look to each glyph. 19
Modular Design Priciple The Anatomy of a Typeface As mentioned, the basic shapes of the font are based on hand drawings. After that, we dissembled the glyphs to separate parts that could easily be reassembled to a final letter. This process needed to be done several times in order to get a perfectly matching collection of components. 21
The characterset. With 500+ Glyphs each The Ethos fontfamily comes with more than 500 glyphs. Some letters, especially on the lower case, are based on a scripted version of the font (e.g. vwy). Others are modified with rounded serifs on one site in order to give it a character of handdrawn letters. f f Nevertheless, uprights and italics still have the same distincitve style on all of its glyphs, which makes it easy to combine on body copy and big headlines. v v

fonts with love The foundry In 2015, Fonts With Love was founded by Florian Klauer exactly ten years after publishing his first ever typeface for Heimatdesign. With the experience of working as an art-director, the typographic focus was essentially geared to creating fonts for corporate use. Over the years various influences led to font-releases like Klartext Mono & Ethos, which actually intended to be a project-specific font. However, all typefaces stand out due to their strong geometrical character, which results from a passion for architecture, furnitureand minimalistic editorial-design.
