Nuclear South West is a public/private partnership supporting the nuclear industry with innovation, skills and 50 billion of supply chain opportunities.

Nuclear South West Image courtesy of EDF Energy Hinkley Point C Hinkley Point C new nuclear power station is a major 18 billion development project led by EDF Energy. Located in Somerset, this will be Europe s largest construction project and the UK s first new nuclear power station in a generation. Hundreds of contracts will be let to companies of all sizes across the 10-year build. The South West is the ideal location to service Hinkley Point C and other contracts across the UK and Europe. EDF Energy s vision for Hinkley Point C is about much more than building a new 18 billion nuclear power station and providing 25,000 job opportunities. It is an enormous industrial venture in its own right. The construction and operation of Hinkley Point C is a long-term venture which will provide tremendous opportunities and economic benefits for the whole region, and also provide a catalyst for further economic growth and productivity. On the journey to that vision we are determined that local people should be able to maximise the skills, employment and supply chain opportunities that are available, and we are delighted to be working with our partners to achieve that. David Eccles, Head of Stakeholder Engagement, Hinkley Point C EDF Energy. Oldbury Power Station Horizon Nuclear Power is a UK energy company developing a new generation of nuclear power stations. A wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd., we plan to provide at least 5,400MW of new power station capacity across two sites in the UK, enough to power around 10 million homes. Our second site proposed is near Oldbury in South Gloucestershire and a fundamental principle for Horizon s developments is that the Oldbury programme should take advantage of learnings from Wylfa Newydd, our lead site. Horizon is aiming to secure first electricity generation at Wylfa Newydd within the first half of the 2020s. For more information visit www.horizonnuclearpower.com. Image courtesy of NCfN

Nuclear South West A Skilled Workforce With an incredibly skilled, yet cost-effective workforce, Nuclear South West is already home to over 8,000 Nuclear Engineers, expecting to rise to 42,000 at the height of the projects. The South West has an unparalleled reputation for Nuclear Skills Programmes, from school-age, advancing through the region s excellent Colleges and Universities. In response to growing nuclear skills demands, South West training providers work in partnership with EDF Energy and Tier 1 contractors as the Hinkley Point Training Agency, to ensure delivery of highly-skilled workers for the industry. Gloucestershire Science & Technology Park Berkeley Green will provide specialist high quality vocational and academic education in Advanced Manufacturing and Digital Technologies including Cyber Security. Image courtesy of EDF Energy Decommissioning The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority spends 3 billion per year, with 1.75 billion within the supply chain, supporting 3,500 companies including SMEs. Hinkley Point A is owned by Magnox Ltd. and is currently being decommissioned. Hinkley Point B is owned by EDF Energy and is scheduled to operate until 2023. There are likely to be further contract opportunities in the future. Magnox Ltd. has its headquarters in the South West and a major programme of work is underway to decommission and dismantle the two reactors at the Winfrith site in Dorset, as well as the sites in Oldbury and Berkeley. Nuclear Defence There is an active nuclear defence programme in the UK, which offers supply chain opportunities. Key Nuclear South West defence companies include the Ministry of Defence, AWE, Jacobs Engineering, Babcock International and Thales UK. Wider Opportunities Not only can South West based companies benefit from huge nuclear sector opportunities over the next 10-20 years, they could also find opportunities in other world-leading sectors. Those with transferable technologies and products could work within the largest Aerospace Cluster in Europe, the fastest growing Tech Cluster in the UK, innovative Marine and Low Carbon Energy Industries and strong Financial and Professional Services. The opportunities for growth and diversification in the region are many and varied. A significant Submarine Dismantling Project will be undertaken at Devonport, Plymouth.

The National College for Nuclear Nuclear South West The new South West Campus will train future workers and develop world-class nuclear skills. The Southern hub of the College, a partnership between the British Government, Bridgwater College and nuclear employers led by EDF Energy will provide a reactor simulator and virtual reality engineering learning facilities. High-tech specialist training will meet the skills needs of nuclear industry employers across the UK. Image courtesy of NCfN Research & Development The South West is at the forefront of research that supports the safe and efficient operation of nuclear systems in the UK and around the world. World-leading research institutes include the South West Nuclear Hub, which incorporates the Bristol Oxford Nuclear Research Centre - a collaboration between the Universities of Bristol and Oxford. The South West Nuclear Hub is a gateway to nuclear energy related research capability across the region, and offers collaborative research opportunities to industry partners. The University of Exeter s Centre for Additive Layer Manufacturing and the University of Plymouth s Electron Microscopy Centre also offer companies a chance to use world-class research facilities for collaborative research. The University of Bath excels in the fields of Advanced Materials, Modelling, Sustainable Technologies, Process Development and Supply Chain Analysis. The UK Government has pledged 250 million for innovative nuclear technologies, and the area has the highlevel skills, cutting edge R&D facilities, and significant advanced manufacturing and engineering capability to provide the correct conditions for the emerging Small Modular Reactor technology.

A Soft Landing Package, with industry ambassadors, national and local contacts and expertise can ease the investment process. Financial and in-kind support initiatives are available and the region offers a huge selection of high-quality development sites and premises, including several Enterprise Zones and Areas.
