What is Jing? Jing is a simple tool that can be used to capture select images from the screen or record screen captures. The tool is free and easy to download for both Mac and PC. You will have access to all your Jing captures through any computer once you register with a free Screencast.com account. 3
Jing is free and easy to download. Downloading Jing First open up a browser (Safari, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.). In the search bar type or copy the following URL: https://www.techsmith.com/jing.html Once on the Jing homepage select the blue Free Download button. Select the correct operating system of your device Follow the installation instructions on your device. View the tutorial and follow the instructions to create a free Screencast.com account. 4
An Overview of Jing Jing functions the same between Mac and PC devices. The distinct difference is Jing s location once installed. Mac devices: Once opened, Jing is located on the top right- hand side of the screen. PC devices: Once opened, Jing is located on the top center of the screen. Jing contains three options. Capture Select this bubble to capture selected areas of your screen. You can choose between capturing a live video or taking a picture. History By selecting this, you are able to view all of your previous captures. More The more bubble opens a new window where you can choose between Done, Send Feedback, Preferences, Help, and Quit. 5
Capturing a Picture Open the Jing application on your device. Select the Capture bubble. Using your mouse, move the orange lines to border the area you would like to capture. Notice: If you hover over a boxed area, Jing may recognize it; simply select the boxed area when bordered by the orang line to capture it. Click the capture an image icon, a box with a rectangle in the center. Name the image, edit it if desired, and save the image. 6
How to Edit a Picture Once you have captured a picture, Jing allows you to edit it. You have several options: arrow, text, frame, and highlight. There are also the undo and redo options and a color box to change the color of the tools you select. Arrow To use the Arrow tool, select it Arrow tool icon, a box with an arrow. Click the color box to choose the color of your arrow and then click and drag on the screen to create arrows. Note you can use the undo or redo buttons at any time. To delete an arrow, select it and press the delete button on your keyboard. 7
Text To use the Text tool, select the Text tool icon, a box with the letter T. You have several options. Select text size by adjusting the circle on the line. Select text font with the text font box. Choose the text color with the top colored box on the top right. Select the box color with the colored box on the bottom right. To delete a text box, select it and press the delete button on your keyboard. 8
Frame To use the Frame tool, select the Frame tool icon, an orange box. Select the color of your frame by clicking the color box. Click and hold your mouse over the frame to move it. To delete a frame, select it and press the delete button on your keyboard. 9
Highlight To use the Highlight tool, select the Highlight tool icon, a highlighter drawing a line. Change the highlight color by selecting the color box. Click and hold the highlighted area to move it. To delete a highlight, select it and press the delete button on your keyboard. 10
Capturing a Video Open the Jing application on your device. Select the Capture bubble. Using your mouse, move the orange lines to border the area you would like to capture. Notice: If you hover over a boxed area, Jing may recognize it; simply select the boxed area when bordered by the orang line to capture it. Click the capture a video icon, a box with a filmstrip in the center. Adjust your microphone options. Click Continue when ready to record. Record the video. Click the Finish icon, the yellow box to the left- hand side, when complete. 11
Recording Options Notice that you have several options while recording. Finish Select this button once you have completed your video. Pause Select this button if you need to pause your video at anytime. Click the Resume icon (seen on right) when ready to continue. Mute/Unmute Depending on which option you begin the video using, you can mute or unmute the recording by selecting one of these icons. Restart Select this if you would like to restart your video. Note: The current video will be discarded. Cancel Select this to cancel your video, permanently deleting it. 12
Sharing Your Capture Once you have finished capturing a picture or video, there are several options to save the capture. Note: All pictures saved are in png format. All videos saved are in swf format, which CANNOT be viewed on mobile devices (see How to Convert swf chapter). Share via Screencast.com By selecting this option, the capture is saved to your created Screencast.com account. Log into Screencast.com from any computer to view all of your saved captures. Save By selecting this option, the capture is saved directly to the computer that is in use. Copy By selecting this option, the capture is copied. You can paste the image to an appropriate location (e.g. Word Document, email, folder). Cancel Select this option to cancel your caption. It is permanently deleted. Customize Jing Buttons Select this button to create a new button allowing the capture to be saved in a different location, such as Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube (authorization is required on the accounts). 13
Your Screencast.com Account First log into your Screencast.com account (once should have been created upon downloading Jing if not, create a free account). Open a browser, type www.screencast.com, and log in on the top right- hand side. The homepage looks as follows: 14
View the Welcome to Screencast.com video for an overview. Select this to upload content from your computer directly into your library. Select Browse to locate content from your computer. Select this to create a new folder so you can organize your captures. Type the folder Title and add a Description within the General Information section. Check the itunes feed box if you wish for the content to play within itunes. Click Save on the bottom right- hand side when finished. Select Help on the top right for assistance. 15
Select this to create a playlist from your library videos. The videos can be generated as an itunes feed. Type the playlist Title and add a Description within the General Information section. Check the itunes feed box if you wish for the content to play within itunes. Click Save on the bottom right- hand side when finished. Select Help on the top right for assistance. Select this to organize your content into created folders. Select the content from the left and Drag and drop it to the right where you wish for it to be located. Select Done on the bottom right- hand side when finished. 16
Your Folder Options By hovering your mouse over a Folder, several options appear. Open Click the Open Folder icon (an open folder) to open a Folder and view its contents. Click the Edit icon (a pencil and paper) to edit the Folder s Title, Description, and Privacy. Click Save on the bottom right- hand side when done. Edit Delete Click the Delete icon (a trash can) to delete a Folder. Note: all of the contents within the folder will also be deleted. 17
Your Video and Photo Options By hovering your mouse over a Photo or Video several options appear. View By selecting the View icon (an open folder) you can view the capture. Note: The image appears as a new page within Screencast.com. Edit Select the Edit icon (a pencil and paper) to edit the capture s Title, Description, Keywords, Release Date, Author, and other Viewing Options. Click Save on the bottom right- hand side when done. Share Click the Share icon (three arrows) to share your capture. You can share a URL, Link, HTML, or Send an Invitation. 18
Delete Click the Delete icon (a trash can) to delete the video or photo. Extra Help For more help with your Screencast.com account click the orange Help box on the top right- hand side or click Help Center on the bottom left- hand side. 19
