HYgro-blu Instruction Manual
HYgro-Blu HYgro-Blu Lite Basic Features HYgro-blu is an environmental sensor system designed to measure Humidity, Temperature and Atmospheric Pressure using advanced sensors and the latest bluetooth technology. HYgro-blu is designed to provide the following features. Ÿ Monitor humidity, temperature and pressure in a small footprint package. Ÿ The ability to locate the sensor within critical areas. Humidity levels change even within 1 enclosed room due to air movement and ambient conditions. Often, the critical area is not necessarily the same area where convenient viewing of the gauge display is located. Ÿ Humidity, Temperature, Pressure, Vapor Pressure and Dew Point can be viewed on an IOS device. Ÿ All measurements captured on the IOS device are recorded and can be seen as a trend plot. Often it is useful to know the current trend of the measurements which tell more of a story than the present instantaneous value. For example, luthiers know that it is better to perform gluing operations on wood instruments where the wood is in a state of absorbing moisture, rather than losing moisture. Ÿ Alarm trigger points can be defined on the IOS device which will alert the user when any value has dropped below or increased above set parameters. Alarm values that occurred whilst the IOS device was out of range, will be alerted on the next connection with Hygro blu. Ÿ Hygro-blu includes an adjustment function. Although HYgro-blu utilizes the highest quality sensors, any humidity sensor is subject to tolerance and fluctuation. When the user wants Hygro-blu to display the same value as some other existing sensor, the adjustment facility can be used.
Power Features HYgro-blu and HYgro-blu Lite use AAA batteries for power. Batteries should last around 4 months or longer depending on quality and environmental conditions. HYgro-blu Lite will power ON as soon as batteries are inserted. On HYgro-Blu devices there are 2 shorting jumper positions that can be seen through the center ventilation slot. The first jumper slot (pre-installed) is for power and has to be installed for the device to operate. The second jumper position SHOULD NOT be installed when first powering ON the device. Please see the HYGROMETER ADJUSTMENT section. HYgro-blu LCD Display The HYgro-blu device contains a crisp LCD display to provide local information display. This device also contains the bluetooth LE components so it can also operate with the HYgro-blu IOS app. Relative humidity and Temperature are displayed on the top 2 lines. The 3rd line is a multi-display line that will change once every minute. This line will display Atmospheric Pressure, Vapor Pressure, Dew Point and Battery voltage. If the battery voltage falls below 2.3v, this line will only display LOW BATTERY and the batteries should be changed. Relative Humidity Temperature Multi-Display Line Atmospheric Pressure Dew Point Vapor Pressure Battery Level Relative Humidity is displayed in percentage %. Temperature, dew point and pressure values are displayed either in metric units (celsius, mbar) or imperial (fahrenheit, inch Hg). The default display is in Imperial units and can be changed by inserting shorting jumper #2. NOTE: Jumper 2 should NOT be installed at initial power-up of the device OR when changing batteries. If metric units are required, Jumper 2 should only be installed after device has started and is successfully displaying sensor values. See HYGROMETER ADJUSTMENT for more information.
Hygrometer Adjustment. Although HYgro-blu features the highest quality sensors, all humidity sensors are subject to tolerance and fluctuation. Furthermore, it may be desirable to adjust HYgro-blu to align with existing humidity gauges. For these reasons, HYgro-blu features an adjustment capability if required. This adjustment mode is entered upon initial startup if the Setup Jumper is installed. The adjustment procedure is carried out by a sequence of inserting and removing jumper 2. HYgro-blu Adjustment sequence. Ÿ Ensure device if OFF by removing batteries or Jumper 1 Ÿ Insert Jumper 2 and replace battery or Jumper 1. Ÿ The display will prompt the user to either leave jumper 2 installed (POSITIVE ADJUSTMENT) or remove Jumper 2 for NEGATIVE ADJUSTMENT. This decision must be made within 5 seconds or the device will assume POSITIVE ADJUSTMENT. Ÿ The display will prompt the user to wait for the correct adjustment value to appear on the screen and should either Remove or Replace Jumper 2 as appropriate when the correct count value is displayed. Ÿ The display will start counting up from 0 to 5. Ÿ When the desired adjustment value is reached, remove or replace the jumper as appropriate. The count will stop. Ÿ The display will confirm the adjustment value that will be stored. Ÿ HYgro-blu will restart and display the initial startup screen. Ÿ Hygro-blu will now display the sensor values. The Relative Humidity value will now be incremented or decremented by the adjustment value chosen. Ÿ Note: When replacing batteries, this procedure will have to be repeated. HYgro-blu Lite Adjustment Sequence As HYgro-blu Lite has no LCD display, the adjustment sequence has to be performed by referring to the on board BLUE LED. Ÿ Open the HYgro-blu Lite enclosure by removing the 4 screws and carefully lifting the top. HYgro-blu Lite is supplied with an external shorting jumper for adjustment purposes. Ÿ Turn OFF HYgro-blu Lite by removing 1 battery. Install the 2 pin jumper in the last 2 positions on the 5-way connector as shown. Ÿ Replace the battery to TURN ON HYgro-blu Lite. Ÿ LED will flash 5 times to indicate adjustment mode. Ÿ LED will flash 2 times to indicate Ready to receive direction. Ÿ Leave the Jumper installed for POSITIVE adjustment. Remove the Jumper for NEGATIVE adjustment. Ÿ LED will flash 5 times to indicate Direction Received Ÿ Decide on the adjustment value you would like to add or subtract. Ÿ The LED will start an incrementing series of flashes from 1 to 5. After 5 seconds the LED will flash 1 time. After another 5 seconds the LED will flash 2 times, then 3 times etc up to 10 times. Ÿ Remove or install the jumper as appropriate when the desired count has been achieved. Example, If you want to add a count value of 3, the jumper status should be changed after the LED flashes 3 times. Ÿ LED will flash 5 times to indicate count received. Ÿ LED will the flash a number of times equal to the stored value. Ÿ The Jumper can now be removed (if installed) and the cover replaced. Ÿ If batteries are removed, this procedure will need to be repeated.
HYgro-blu IOS App The HYgro-blu devices can communicate sensor values to an IOS iphone or ipad via Bluetooth LE. The app can be found by searching the itunes App store for HYgro-blu or going to https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hygro-blu/id952051089?mt=8 After running the app, if any devices are within range, they will appear in the device list as seen below. Initially all devices will bear the name No Name Set. If you have more than 1 device, each device can be identified individually by placing it in close proximity to the IOS device. The message Device very near will appear for the relevant device. Clicking on the EDIT button will allow you to remove or edit device names. Click on SET NAME and enter the desired name for the device. From the Sensors List, clicking on any Sensor Name will take you to the device detail page. Device detail shows the 5 sensor values in blue circles. These values will change to RED when in Alarm condition. Alarm messages will appear below sensor values. If alarm conditions occurred whilst device was out of range, a historical message will be displayed. Scrolling down below the sensor values shows the individual sensor trend plots. Dashed vertical lines represent interruptions in connections longer than 15 minutes. A detailed measurement log for each sensor can be viewed by clicking the Show Measurement Details button. Bluetooth Connection. It is very important to understand the nature of Bluetooth LE connectivity. BLE does not require pairing like traditional Bluetooth devices. BLE is designed for periodic data transfer, unlike audio headsets for instance. BLE has the ability to send data to the iphone, even when the HYgro-blu app is running in the background or the iphone is asleep. However, this is not predictable as Apple severely restrict the ability of applications to communicate in these modes. The success of these communications will depend on individual iphone activity, settings and Apple updates over time. The only sure way to update the data in the HYgro-blu Application is to open the App at least to the device list page, so that all sensors can be updated. HYgro-blu contains a feature to remind the user to check the sensor values at regular intervals if required. See the GLOBAL SETTINGS (MANUAL SCANNING) section. Configuration Settings There are 2 types of configuration settings available to the user. GLOBAL SETTINGS affect ALL sensors and DEVICE SETTINGS only affect the individual device being configured. Glabal Settings Device Settings Global Settings Units of Measure Choose which units of measure to use Device list Trend Plot Choose which trend plot will appear in the device list page Background Scanning. This should normally be ON to enable scanning when the App is in the background. Manual Scanning The only guaranteed method to ensure regular data logging is to manually activate the HYgro-blu App so that it can connect to the devices. In critical conditions where regular data connections are required for recording data, the user may set a reminder within the app. This can be as low as 1 per minute or as high as 1 per day. Normally 1 per day is acceptable. A pop-up message will appear on the iphone reminding the user to run the HYgro-blu app. Swiping this warning message will automatically launch the app. NOTE: Take care with use of this feature as warnings can be activated during the night.
Device Settings. The device settings are the individual Alarm settings for each device. Note that the device settings are stored on the HYgro-blu devices, so to change these settings it is necessary for the device to be in close proximity to the iphone. Touching the SETTINGS button within the Device Detail page will initiate connection to the device IMPORTANT - Save settings after configuration. Touch the Alarm Trip value to edit the LOW and HIGH values required. Turn the individual Alarm ON or OFF Reserved for future use.
