Introduction This document lists the hardware and software configurations on which you can install Aster Database version 5.0.2. Teradata Aster provides customer support for clusters installed on the platforms listed in this document. Not all platforms have been tested and certified by Teradata Aster quality assurance. Those that have been tested and certified are listed below as Teradata Aster-Certified. Those platforms listed as Teradata Aster-Supported have not been fully tested in our labs, but we do support them. Except where noted otherwise, the queen, worker, and loader should use the same hardware configuration. Support for Teradata Aster MapReduce Appliance 2 Teradata Aster MapReduce Appliance 2 upgrades from Aster Database 4.6.2, 5.0 or 5.0.1 to Aster Database 5.0.2 are supported. Support for Teradata Aster Big Analytics Appliance 3H Teradata Aster Big Analytics Appliance 3H upgrades from Aster Database 5.0 or 5.0.1 to Aster Database 5.0.2 are supported. Teradata Aster-Certified Platforms for Aster Database 5.02 on RHEL 6.0 and SLES 11 SP2 These are the hardware platforms Teradata Aster has certified for use with Aster Database 5.0.2 installations running on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 64-bit operating system or the SLES 11 SP2 64-bit operating system (Aster-provided distribution only): Dell C2100 Dell C6100 HP DL380 G7 HP DL180 G6 End-of-life for Ubuntu We no longer support Ubuntu for new Aster installations. Important! Teradata Aster has deprecated the use of the Ubuntu operating system and does not support new installations of Aster Database on Ubuntu. December 17, 2012 Page 2 Aster Database 5.0.2
Aster Database 5.0.2 requires either Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 64-bit or SLES 11 SP2 (Asterprovided distribution) 64-bit. To upgrade an existing Ubuntu Aster Database cluster, you must 1. Migrate to Red Hat on Aster Database version 4.6.3. 2. Then upgrade to 5.0.2. See the Aster Database Installation Guide for detailed migration and upgrade instructions. Support for Clean Installations on CentOS Commodity Hardware has Ended We no longer support clean installations on CentOS commodity hardware for new Aster installations. CentOS is supported only on the Amazon EC2 Cloud. Support for EC2 Clean installs of Aster Database 5.0.2 in the Amazon EC2 cloud using the CentOS 5.6 operating system are supported. However, you may not upgrade to Aster Database version 5.0.2 directly. You must first upgrade to 4.6.3 HP1, the EC2 upgrade enabler release. Hardware Platform Specifications General Information (applies to all platforms): CPUS: Dual Intel Xeon X5600 series (code-named Westmere ) Hyperthreading: Teradata Aster recommends turning on Hyperthreading for better performance. Cluster sizing should still be done based solely on the number of physical cores. Each Xeon X5600 module has up to six physical cores. Quad core Xeon E5500 modules with four cores each are supported on older models. Disks: Use SAS disks only. SATA disks are not supported on any of the configurations. NICs: Ten Gigabit Ethernet recommended; 2x or 4x 1 Gigabit Ethernet supported on older platforms. Supported Operating Systems for Physical Software-Only Installations The supported operating system depends on whether you are performing a new installation or an upgrade: New installations of Aster Database 5.0.2 must be installed on 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 (RHEL 6.0) or 64-bit SLES 11 SP2 (Aster-provided distribution only). Check the Aster Database Installation Guide for a list of required kernel patches for Red Hat. To upgrade Aster Database 4.6.3 clusters running on 64-bit Ubuntu 9.04 to Aster Database 5.0.2, you must: 1. Migrate the cluster to RHEL 6.0. 2. Upgrade to Aster Database 5.0.2. See detailed instruction in the Aster Database Installation Guide. To upgrade clusters with versions earlier than Aster Database 4.6.3 running on 64-bit Ubuntu 9.04, you must: 1. Upgrade to Aster Database 4.6.3. 2. Migrate the cluster to RHEL 6.0. See detailed instruction in the Aster Database Installation Guide. Supported Operating Systems for EC2 Installations Version 5.0.2 of Aster Database is supported for clean installs on the EC2 cloud. Direct upgrades to 5.0.2 are not supported on EC2. For upgrades of existing installations to 5.0.2, you must first upgrade to 4.6.3 HP1.
