MetriKon Format Guidelines MetriKon format guidelines for proceedings papers First author, second author, third author Affiliation of the author/s (company/university) Email-address/es of the author/s Abstract: This is an example paper which explains the formal structure of professional papers for the software metrics conference IWSM/MetriKon 2008 by using the Metri- Kon format guidelines. Furthermore, it includes requirements for the preparation of the ready for press version of your accepted conference paper. In order to facilitate the editorial revision when arranging the proceedings, it is obligatory to comply with this specified format guidelines. Papers which differ from the format guidelines can not be considered in the proceedings. This example document is for you to facilitate keeping the required formats. It can directly serve as a template for the final version of your paper. On the DASMA-Website [2] you will find corresponding templates for other word processors. It is not obligatory to apply these format guidelines for the abridged version which is to be assessed but it can, of course, be used. Author 1, Author 2 1 Introduction The proceedings of a IWSM/MetriKon conference are to be a final summary of all papers of this conference and are to be published as a book. In order to design the book uniformly and to ensure a high layout quality it is necessary that all papers follow uniform layout guidelines. Concretely, all papers should be geared to this example as much as possible, for instance, by simply using this formatting directly or using this text as a template for your wordprocessor. This StarOffice/OpenOffice-document defines format guidelines for formatting your texts. It includes the desired page layout and the basic paragraph formats for main title, abstract, first-order headings, main text, references and other paragraph formats. You will find an electronic copy of this text on the DASMA and MetriKon website [2]. You will also find appropriate templates for Microsoft Word and Adobe FrameMaker. 2 Structure and volume of the submitted papers Each paper should start with a summary (abstract) not exceeding 200 words followed by a short list of 5 keywords at the most which characterizes the content of the paper. The abstract should consist of a short and concise summary of the paper and a conclusion. The keywords should help the reader to find out, whether the paper is interesting for him or not. As far as it is possible, the author is asked to translate the abstract into the respective conference language. The actual paper follows in a structure the author considers meaningful, possibly divided in chapters. Bibliographical references should only refer to published material. Please mention internal reports only if they are discretionary for the reader. To shorten production time of the proceedings the publisher needs to know the estimated size of the book in advance. For planing purpose we expect a mean size of the final papers of approximately 14 pages, as experienced with former conferences. But you don't have to meet this mean value. If you expect your paper to differ by more than 4 pages from this scope, please arrange this with the program committee to allow realignment of planning data. 3 Figures and tables Figures and tables can be included into the electronic document at discretion. In case you use coloured images, please ensure that the information can be recognized even in a monochrome print. Figures and tables have to be subtitled 2 Software Measurement Conference
MetriKon Format Guidelines and numbered. Please create own number ranges for the figures and tables. It is in the author s discretion, whether he sets the numeration manually or automatically. 4 Language The conference languages and the languages of the written version of the papers are mentioned in the Call for Papers and the guidelines for submission of papers. 5 Design of the document 5.1 Page design The papers have to be arranged for a DIN A4 double-sided print. Please do not forget to configure your printer driver respectively prior to generation of the ready-for-press PostScript or pdf file. Later on for printing of the book the publisher will reduce the page size to the book format DIN A5. Because of the double-sided print, the header and footer of 2 consecutive pages have to be different. Just like an opened book, there are odd numbers on the right hand side and even numbers on the left hand side (see figure 1). Each paper has to begin on a right, odd page. Consequently, each paper has to end on a left, even page, so that the following paper can start on an odd page. The number of pages of each paper has to be even. If necessary, the paper has to end with a blank page (such as this example document). In this case, please add the blank page (by a programmed page break). Thereby, you make the montage of the proceedings easier for the editorial staff. The following dimensions of the page design have to be maintained: Paper size: DIN A4 Margin left: 3,00 cm Margin right: 2,00 cm Margin top: 1,25 cm Margin bottom: 1,25 cm Header: distance from edge 0,70 cm, size 0,90 cm Footer: distance from edge 0,70 cm, size 0,90 cm IWSM/MetriKon 2008 3
Author 1, Author 2 5.2 Header and footer, paging The entries in the header and footer of the proceedings are to make it easier for the reader to orientate. Therefore, in the header should be written the title of the paper as well as the names of the authors. In the footer should be written the page number and the name of the conference (see page 1). The title of the paper and the names of the authors have to be entered by the authors in the header. The title appears only on the right (odd) pages at the right edge of the header, in this paper MetriKon Format Guidelines. The names of the authors appear only on a left (even) page at the left edge of the header, in this article Author 1, Author 2. After assembling the papers to a book the editorial staff will enter the page numbers in the page footer at the outer edge of the page (see figure 1). As the final numeration is not feasible until the proceedings are arranged, the author must not enter page numbers in the final version of his paper. In this paper you see the page numbers at the designated place for illustration and orientation purposes only. In case your paper is based on a template containing page numbers, please remove them before you submit your ready for press paper. left page right page authors' names even page numbers title of paper odd page numbers Figure 1: Page design with header and footer The name of the conference has already been entered in this template. In case the authors name(s) or the title of your paper does not fit in a single line, please abbreviate first names or titles in an appropriate way. 5.3 Paragraph formats This document only includes the formats for the main paragraphs which are necessary for all papers. Optionally, the author may differentiate further along the lines of the description of the paragraph formats provided in this exemplary paper. As long as the requested uniform design is reached, the author may modify these provided formats or use own format templates. Basic formats for all paragraphs (standard) Alignment: Fully justified Font: Times (New) Roman Font style: standard Font size: 14 points Spacing before: 0.20 cm Indentations: none All other paragraph formats are derived from the basic formats. Below you will find a list of variations. Please use other fonts only, if it is necessary to accentuate the content or to reduze table size. Always remember that the document will be shrunk to DIN A5 size (that is a 70% reduction) for printing. Therefor font sizes below 6 points should be avoided in any way. Within the text, please refer to the references by putting the numbers in brackets (e.g.: [1] ). See example of a citation at the end of this document. MetriKon Format Guidelines 6 File format of submitted papers All papers will be adopted without modification, except the addition of page numbers. In order to avoid accidental modifications during montage of the proceedings, please submit the ready for press papers in PostScript- or pdf-format. To create PostScript files, we recommend a generic PostScript printer driver which is normally included in delivery of all prevalent operating systems. For Microsoft Windows we successfully used the drivers Adobe Generic PostScript Printer [4] or HP ColorLaserJet 4500 [5]. In case the colour information of images and graphics is to be maintained in the electronic version of the paper, please configure the driver correspondingly. When creating a pdf-file, please configure the creating program, so that the created file is compatible to Acrobat 3. In case of doubt, please submit the file in PostScript format. 7 Questions and suggestions In case of questions and suggestions, please refer to Günter Büren by Email <gb@bup-nbg.de>. Acknowledgement These guidelines are derived from ICSE Conference Proceedings Format specifications. The page format has been taken from the ready for press conference papers of IWSM 2002 [3]. The basic paragraph formats are geared to the paragraph formats which have been used there. Sincere thanks are given to all who have contributed in the development of these guidelines. References 1.
