Lawson State Community College Dual Enrollment Student Handbook 2014 2015

Dual Enrollment Handbook & Login Instructions All Dual Enrolled Students are Responsible for Reading the Contents of this Handbook Your success as a Dual Enrollment student at Lawson State is of paramount importance to us. One of the first things you need to learn as a new Lawson State student is that you need to gain access to three critical online sectors: Blackboard, LSCC Email and our Student Suite system. Below, you will find information on all three of these online services as well as other important information that will help you as you start the beginning of your college career. NOTE: If you have additional questions that are not covered in this information or experience technical difficulties or concerns within your course, please contact us at: HSenroll@lawsonstate.edu What is Blackboard? Whether you are taking an online course (which you can access 24/7) or a traditional ground course, your instructor will be using Blackboard (an online course management system) to deliver your assignments, announcements, homework, and more. Be sure you login Blackboard daily and follow all instructions posted by your instructor. If you are taking an online course, you will NOT report to an actual physical classroom. Rather, your class will be conducted (via Blackboard). As an online student, you can access your course 24/7 (at your convenience). Keep in mind, though, that all online courses have weekly deadlines and posting requirements, so it is important to login in frequently throughout each week, stay organized, meet all deadlines, take all quizzes and tests, and participate in all online discussions and activities. NOTE: If you encounter login problems, email us at HSenroll@lawsonstate.edu. How to Login Blackboard? Go to Lawson s main website at www.lawsonstate.edu. Scroll down and click on the Blackboard icon pictured on your right-side of the screen. Username: Your Blackboard username is identical to your student email address, without including the @lawsonstate.edu domain. The domain is the @ symbol and all characters to the right of this symbol. You can find your email address listed near the top of student schedule (on the left) or within your Student Suite account. Example -- jdoe2345@students.lawsonstate.edu Your Blackboard Username in the above example would be: jdoe2345 Password: Your Blackboard password is your Date of Birth in the following format MMDDYY Example: Date of Birth July 4, 1998 Password= 070498

Lawson State Email All Dual Enrolled students MUST use their Lawson State email addresses. Please be advised that this is the ONLY method your instructor will use in contacting or sending messages, reminders and notifications to you as a student, particularly if you are an online student. All students, then, are expected to check Lawson State email regularly throughout each week. Your email address is listed near the top of your class schedule (that is enclosed within this letter). How to Login in Your Lawson State Email Account? Go to Lawson s main website at www.lawsonstate.edu. Scroll down and click on the green Student Email icon pictured on your right-side of the screen. Your Lawson State email is sponsored by Google. Like Blackboard, your email username is identical to your student email address, without including the @lawsonstate.edu domain. The domain is the @ symbol and all characters to the right of this symbol. You can find your email address listed near the top of student schedule (on the left) or within your Student Suite account. Example -- jdoe2345@students.lawsonstate.edu Your Blackboard Username in the above example would be: jdoe2345 Password: Every student has the same initial default password is abc12345* NOTE: You will be required to change your default password on your first logon. You can change your password to whatever you like as long as it has a minimum of eight (8) characters. Contact Us if You Encounter Technical Problems with Email If you have any problems logging into student email or resetting your password, please do the following: From your personal email account, email: helpdesk@lawsonstate.edu. Make sure the message subject line reads: Student Email Assistance. Then, within your message, provide the Help Desk with the following: 1. First Name / Last Name / Date of Birth 2. Student ID (this is listed at the very top of your schedule) 3. Last 4 digits of your Social Security # 4. Description of the problem you are encountering within student email

What is Student Suite? All Lawson State students, including Dual Enrollment students, create a history at the college (from the moment they make application to the college). This history includes your contact information; the grades you make in your classes; your class schedule; unofficial transcripts, contact information and more. We never mail out this type of information. Rather, we provide this information online, so students have access to their personal history 24/7. To review and/or access this information, you need to login to Student Suite. How to Login in Your Student Suite Account? Go to Lawson s main website at www.lawsonstate.edu. Scroll down and click on the Student Suite icon screen. pictured on your right-side of the User Name: Your User Name is your 9-digit Social Security Number (without dashes or spaces). Example: 111223333 PIN: Your default PIN # is your six-digit date of birth (without dashes or spaces). PIN Example: March 17, 1998 031798 NOTE: The system will prompt you to change your PIN number following your first login. Be sure to change your PIN to a number you can remember (i.e., last 4 digits of your SSN, mother s birth date, etc ) Forgot PIN? Click the Forgot ID/PIN ' tab within the Student Suite login screen and follow the recovery prompts. Attendance Requirements Dual Enrollment students have the same attendance expectations as regular college students. Students are expected to attend class(es) from Day1 and maintain regular attendance whether online if taking an online course or in class if taking a traditional ground course. Once you establish attendance (attend at least one day), failure to continue attending will lead to a failing grade in the course. There are no excuses in college. You must attend your class(es). NOTE: It is best to withdraw if you are failing due to attendance issues.

How to Withdraw from a Dual Enrollment Course? If you are failing a class, you can opt to withdraw from the class, opposed to receiving a F on your official college transcript. This is always preferred. The withdraw process is done completely online but can ONLY be initiated by the student. Your instructor CANNOT withdraw you from the class. Only the student enrolled in the class can officially withdraw themselves from a college course. How to Complete an Online Withdraw? First and foremost, never withdraw unless you have spoken with the instructor of record. Also, you should never withdraw too early from a class (before mid-term) or too late (with less than two weeks to go before final exams). Withdrawing should always be treated as a last resort option only. To withdraw from a Dual Enrollment class, log on Lawson s Website at www.lawsonstate.edu and click on the Admissions & Records link. Next, click Student Records & Registrar Information. Finally, click on E-withdrawal & Add / Drops. You will be able to complete this process online. Have a copy of your schedule with you in order to answer all questions related to your course. NOTE: If you are trying to withdraw and it is less than two weeks before your final exam, it is too late. You needed to withdraw sooner. Purchase Your Textbook before Classes Start Although in most cases (depending on your school district) your tuition may be covered at Lawson State, your books are typically not covered (unless you fall under a specialized grant). Hence, it is important that you secure the textbook for your course as fast as possible. You have several options available to secure your textbook. Option 1: Purchase your book directly from one of Lawson State s bookstores (on either campus). The bookstore on the Birmingham campus is located in the Leon Kennedy Building (2 nd floor), and the bookstore on the Bessemer campus is located in near Student Services in the A Building.

Option 2: You may be able to rent or purchase your textbook via an online book/rental company or through the Lawson State bookstore (see our bookstore link at the bottom of our website) or conduct your own Google search for a company of your choice. There are numerous companies that provide this service for students online. You will need the ISBN number to locate the correct book. You can secure the ISBN number (online) by searching our bookstore information (online), or your instructor may also provide you with this information. You can also look up the ISBN number by securing the title of the book (via your course syllabus) along with the edition number and publisher information. Make sure before ordering online that you have the correct ISBN number that matches the edition number. Also, check with your instructor to ensure that your textbook is not a special edition. Some books are tailored to the class and cannot be purchased outside of Lawson State, so it important to investigate this first before ordering online. All Lawson State students need two things an ID and a parking decal (if they plan to drive on campus). We will be distributing student ID s and parking decals (if needed) at the February 1 st required Dual Enrollment Orientation session. Make sure you are present at this meeting to secure these items. Lawson State prides itself on maintaining a safe an comfortable environment for all student. Thus, your safety on our campus is of utmost importance. Student play a major role in protecting the safety of the campus as well by reporting any and all incidents immediately to your instructor or the police department. Always alert your instructor of incidents. And in cases of emergency, call the Lawson State Police Department at 929-3509 (Bessemer campus) and 929-6317 (Birmingham campus). We do not tolerate harassment on our campus in any form. Report all incidents to your instructor. Need Help Have Questions Have Concerns? Contact Us at: HSenroll@lawsonstate.edu
