Cisco Director Class SAN Planning and Design Service Rapidly Plan and Deploy a Cisco Director Class MDS Solution for More Efficient Storage Networking Service Overview Cisco s intelligent storage networking solutions provide customers an improved data center infrastructure for accessing, managing, and protecting their growing information resources. Designed for large-scale initiatives, the Cisco Director Class SAN Planning and Design Service can help you accelerate your migration from discrete storage area networking (SAN) islands to an efficient, interconnected, intelligent SAN based on the Cisco MDS platform. Director class Cisco MDS 9000 Multilayer Directors and Fabric Switches use multiple layers of intelligence to consolidate SAN islands into a secure, manageable solution that supports business continuance and disaster recovery for intelligent storage fabric applications. Cisco and our partners use leading practices to help you define your IT and business requirements while implementing a customized SAN solution. Our engineers hold industry certifications and are subject matter experts in Fibre Channel, SANattached devices, server platforms, and many host operating systems. We have deep expertise in Cisco storage technologies and applications such as backup and replication, as well as extensive design and deployment experience with Cisco director class MDS switches and third-party storage devices. With extensive experience integrating storage networking solutions in real customer environments, we help ensure a successful transition to the Cisco MDS SAN solution that you expect. Cisco and our partners deploy and operate networks using a lifecycle of prepare, plan, design, implement, operate, and optimize phases that align business and technical requirements. The lifecycle approach helps companies to accelerate their success with advanced technologies while increasing the return on a network investment. Plan and Deploy an Efficient Large-Scale SAN Solution The Cisco Director Class SAN Planning and Design Service is a project-based service that helps you speed the identification and resolution of planning, design, and implementation issues by addressing your requirements for storage, server, and data center consolidation, as well as for business continuance and disaster recovery, during the initial SAN deployment. We can even help you migrate to a Cisco MDS SAN. The activities and deliverables available with this service are the following: SAN assessment All contents are Copyright 1992 2008 Cisco Systems, Inc. High-level design Low-level design Implementation and migration plan Implementation support Migration support Knowledge transfer and mentoring SAN Assessment The Cisco SAN assessment gives you a prioritized list of recommendations based on identified and documented Cisco best practices. The SAN assessment is the information-gathering phase of the deployment and allows us, in partnership with you, to collect project-specific data that will be used to organize a detailed project plan covering both the implementation and migration of your SAN. Additional postmigration health checks are available to determine the effectiveness of the design as well as accomplishment of project goals. The SAN assessment provides the following information: Executive summary containing an overview, definitions, and assessment scope as well as collected data and general findings Overview of the current SAN infrastructure, including the general data center environment and a SAN design An analysis of the current environment, including change management and issue handling, security, challenges, and issues SAN infrastructure findings and suggestions that include SAN scalability, SAN availability, zoning, domain configuration, interface configuration, backup and restore, data replication, and disaster recovery Operating environment findings and suggestions applicable to management and monitoring, security, and change management High-Level Design The SAN high-level design activity creates a SAN architecture that is used to validate your specific goals for deploying the Cisco director class MDS platform, while providing an efficient platform for migration. This design outlines the SAN strategy and roadmap based on the conclusions of the SAN assessment. The high-level design document contains the following information: Existing storage topology diagrams Functional requirements Feature recommendations Scalability design considerations Low-Level Design The SAN low-level design activity provides a detailed reference, or blueprint, for the proposed SAN architecture. This design details the SAN topology and individual component configuration necessary for a successful deployment. It also documents the SAN infrastructure to help you manage ongoing documentation of changes. All contents are Copyright 1992 2008 Cisco Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. Collaborating with you and your staff, we develop a workbook that covers naming conventions, zoning, specific switch configurations, IP addressing, device and port mapping, and other information specific to your environment. Implementation and Migration Plan The SAN implementation and migration plan provides guidance to help you successfully deploy a robust and highly stable SAN using Cisco MDS 9000 Multilayer Directors and Fabric Switches. The plan provides step-by-step procedures to implement the configuration specified in the low-level design. To avoid network downtime, a detailed rollback plan for each phase of the implementation is available to use if an issue is found during the implementation. The implementation and migration plan includes the following: Basic site setup such as switch names, virtual SANs (VSANs), cables and labels, zoning and aliasing, and cable locations Management, security, port configuration, and VSAN configuration Migration and cutover tasks Implementation Support During the implementation phase, Cisco offers onsite assistance to help you install, configure, and manage your SAN. This gives you the peace of mind that our experts are available to mitigate risks and rapidly address any issues that might arise. Implementation support includes the following: Supervised racking for optimal cooling of Cisco switches Best practices recommendations for redundant power supply configuration Support in loading configurations for all Cisco devices Support in validating operation of new infrastructure Up to two onsite days One implementation event It does not include racking and stacking of equipment or hands-on support for cable installation. Migration Support Onsite assistance is also available during your migration to a Cisco director class MDS SAN to help ensure a smooth and successful transition event. Problems are addressed quickly, helping you avoid costly delays. Migration support helps assist you in implementation of the migration plan, including configuration of the Cisco switches and troubleshooting as necessary during the migration event. One migration event is included, and onsite support is available for up to two days. Knowledge Transfer The SAN knowledge transfer activity provides an informal transfer of knowledge throughout the project to your staff that addresses operational processes, activities, and tools necessary to manage the SAN infrastructure and achieve operational excellence. Benefits The Cisco Director Class Planning and Design Service helps you accelerate the process of designing and deploying a SAN based on the Cisco MDS platform. Whether you need to create a new SAN or connect SAN islands into an integrated, manageable solution, we apply a proven methodology and best practices to help you support intelligent storage fabric applications.
