GENERAL DESCRIPTION The X-Rite(r) DTP Series of densitometers are automatic strip reading instruments. They employ a sophisticated pattern recognition technique that extracts data from a measured strip. The data to be extracted is setup and defined by the user. - The DTP32, DTP32R, and DTP32TR have Status T optics and are used in the calibration and linearization of color output devices such as ink jet, thermal transfer, and dye sublimation color printers. - The DTP36 is used to calibrate color output devices that use photographic paper and film. The DTP36 uses a Status A response. This instrument also has several defined formats for paper and film strips. (e.g.; E-6, RA-4, etc.). I N T R O D U C T I O N HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL This information will familiarize you with the typographical conventions, display functions and general terms used in this manual. In the text portion of this manual the instrument key names are shown with brackets on both sides and in bold face (e.g., [data], etc.). When a key is momentarily depressed, the word "Press" will be used (e.g., Press [cal]). Active keys that are applicable to a particular operation will be shown as shaded. Information appearing in the display window will be shown with quotation marks on each side and in bold face (e.g., "INSERT CAL STRIP"). viii

WHAT TO DO FIRST! This manual is organized into four Sections and five Appendixes. In order to make the best use of your instrument, be sure to read all four Sections. The Appendixes can be referred to as necessary. Section 1 - Covers packaging contents and power applications. Instrument interface and keyboard displays are also covered. Section 2 - Covers instrument operation, including: Strip alignment and strip guide positioning. Strip (paper & film) measurement procedure. Calibrating the instrument. S E C T I O N O N E 1 Getting Started This section covers unpacking, inspection, and general set up of your instrument. Product description, paper guide adjustments, and measurement techniques are also included. Section One Contents Unpacking and Inspection Applying Power Instrument Interface Serial Interface Keyboard & Display Description UNPACKING AND INSPECTION Remove the instrument from the shipping carton and inspect it for damage. If any damage is noted, contact the transportation company immediately. Do nothing more until the carrier's agent has inspected the damage. Your DTP densitometer was packaged in a specially designed carton to ensure against damage. If reshipment is necessary, the instrument should be packaged in the original carton. If the original carton is not available, a replacement can be obtained from X-Rite, Incorporated. Packing contents vary slightly between the different DTP models. Check your packaging content against your packaging list and original order (see Appendix). 1-1

S E C T I O N O N E APPLYING POWER NOTE: Before plugging in the AC adapter, make sure that the voltage indicated on the adapter complies with the AC line voltage in your area. If not, contact X-Rite or an Authorized Representative. To apply power, insert the small connector end of the AC adapter into the adapter jack on the instrument. Plug the adapter into an AC wall outlet. When power is applied, the instrument will perform a self-test. If the selftest is successful the screen will display the Main Menu. G E T T I N G S T A R T E D INSTRUMENT INTERFACE The following pages illustrate the various cabling and interface methods available for your instrument. The method used will depend upon your computer type and application requirements. Macintosh Computer Interface Cable used: P/N SE108-79-01 1. Insert the 8-pin mini-din plug on the interface cable into the Serial port of your computer. An optional USB to serial converter is available from X-Rite if required. Part Number SE108- USBSERA. 2. Insert the modular plug on the interface cable into the I/O port on the side of the DTP colorimeter. 3. Plug the instrument AC adapter into the jack located on the instrument cable, or into the jack on the side of the instrument. 4. Set the "TYPE" option in configuration to "ser" for Macintosh. Refer to Section 3.1.1 for configuration option definitions and setup procedure. Insert the 8-pin mini-din plug on the interface cable into the 8- pin mini-din jack of the interface adapter. 2. Attach the DB9 connector of the interface adapter to an available RS-232 I/O port on your computer. NOTE: If your available I/O port is 25-pin, you will need to obtain a "9-to-25" pin connector. This is available at most computer stores. 3. Insert the modular plug from the interface cable into the I/O port on the side of the instrument. 4. Plug the instrument AC adapter into the jack located on the interface cable, or into the jack on the side of the instrument. 5. Set the "TYPE" option in the Instrument Configuration to "232." Refer to Section 3.1.1 for configuration option definitions and setup procedure. S E C T I O N O N E SERIAL INTERFACE Serial Output Data transmitted by the instrument has 1 start bit (Logic 0), 8 bits of ASCII, no parity and 1 stop bit (Logic 1). NOTE: The difference between a positive and negative paper or film base is distinguished by upper-case and lower-case letters. A positive paper or film base defines data by transmitting with upper-case letters. A negative paper or film base defines data by transmitting with lower-case letters. Serial Input Data received by the instrument must have 1 start bit (Logic 0), 8 bits of ASCII, no parity bit and 1stop bit (Logic 1). Term Definition Pin 1 SCL (Serial Clock) - This pin is used for the ON line in the Mac ADB and SCL line in Access.bus. Pin 2 TXD (Transmitted Data) - Data transmitted from the densitometer with parameters (baud, format) set by the densitometer. Pin 3 RXD (Received Data) - Data received by the densitometer from outside source using the same parameters as the densitometer. Pin 4 HS_OUT (Handshake Out) - Logic 0 = active (on line). Logic 1 = power off, power up, and self-test. Logic 1 is also used during measurements and when serving RCI. Pin 5 HS_IN (Handshake In) - When configuration "HAND set to CTS, Logic 0 is active; when set to Busy, Logic 1 is active; and when set to OFF or XON, Pin 5 is ignored. Pin 6 +V PC (+5v supply) - This pin supplies +5 volts to the instrument from a PC, Mac, or other controlling device. Pin 7 +V UN (+ Voltage Unregulated) - This pin supplies +12 volts to the instrument instead of +V<MV>PC. This could be voltage from a controller or external AC/DC adapter. Pin 8 P GND (Power Ground) - This pin is used for the ground return of the power supply. Pin 9 D GND (Digital Ground) - This pin is used for the ground return of the data and handshake lines. Pressing [p1], initiates screen "p2", pressing [p2], initiates screen "p3", pressing [p3] returns screen "p1". Return to "p1" of the "Main Menu" at any time by simultaneously pressing the two keys below [MENU]. NOTE: Illustrations depicting menu views represent the DTP36 model. Menu views for the DTP12, DTP32, and DTP32TR differ slightly. The DTP32R only displays reflection functions. The characters appearing above a key dictate which function or action will occur when a key is pressed. Uppercase lettering denotes information, or that a function is active. The most common application is where an X-Rite DTP densitometer is interfaced with a computer and software package. These three items makeup a color management system. The X-Rite DTP densitometer provides data for the color management system, enabling the software to calibrate color output devices such as ink jet, thermal transfer and dye sublimation color printers. The software package configures the densitometer, allowing instrument configuration and editing procedures to be omitted. A second application is where an X-Rite DTP densitometer is interfaced to a computer. The computer lacks software, which supports instrument configuration. In this circumstance data can be sent to spreadsheet and database application software for compiling and viewing. A minimal amount of configuration must be completed using the instrument. See Section 3 for Instrument Configuration. A third application is using the X-Rite DTP densitometer as a stand-alone unit, not interfaced with a computer. Data can be viewed using the instrument keyboard and display. The AC adapter would be used to power the instrument. The instrument must be configured using the instrument keyboard. See Section 3 for Instrument Configuration.Paper Strip When a particular paper strip is selected, one or both of the displayed paper guide setting numbers flash. If only one guide setting number is flashing, this indicates the guide that the strip rests on first when measuring. In most cases this only occurs on a strip that required multiple passes such as, Fuji CP-21. Both guide setting numbers flash on single pass strips. 2-1

S E C T I O N T W O INSTRUMENT OPERATION STRIP GUIDE The X-Rite DTP densitometer is simple and easy to use. The steps for instrument operation vary only slightly, depending on the type of application it is used with. Step 1. Unpack and Inspect. (Section 1.1) Step 2. Apply Power. (Section 1.2) Step 3. Interface Instrument (Section 1.3) and/or Configure Instrument. (Section 3) Step 4. Position Strip Guide. (Section 2.3) Step 5. Measure Strip. (Section 2.4) The densitometer has an adjustable strip guide on the front of the instrument. This strip guide moves left and right to accommodate different size strips. After selecting a strip (2.4 Strip Measurement, Step 2) the strip guide pointer must be moved to the corresponding stop location number appearing in the instrument display. (See Section 2.6 Strip Setup (Editing) for information on Stop Location Number.) The strip guide can be positioned from 1/2" (12.7 mm) to 3" (76.2 mm) to the right of the center triangle, in 1/2" (12.7 mm) increments. Display Center Diamond Strip Guide 10. 20. 30. S E C T I O N T W O Measurement Notes - Feed the strips into the instrument so the darkest steps are read first. When "auto" or "cont" is selected the first step s density must be 0.5D greater than the Dmin (substrate), this insures proper pattern strip recognition. - A 1.25" (30.5 mm) leader should precede the leading edge of the first step. If this is not possible, refer to Section 2.9 for information on measuring leaderless strips. - Inspect the strip for spots or defects on the step. Defects may cause inaccurate measurements. - Position strip against the strip guide. Insert strip until it stops against the drive roller, [approximately 3" (76.2 mm)]. One or two seconds after contacting the roller, the motor activates and automatically pulls the strip through the instrument. Guide the strip with slight pressure, continually pushing the strip against the strip guide. This prevents skewing of the strip as it is being measured. Measurement Procedure NOTE: Illustrations depicting menu views represent the DTP36 model. Menu views for the DTP32 and DTP32TR differ slightly. The DTP32R only displays reflection functions. The DTP36 film measurement procedure is similar to the paper measurement procedure. 1. At Main Menu level, continually press [p#] until "p1" appears, then press [pap] for paper strip, [film] for film. Pass Name 2. Select desired strip setting. Press [other] and page through available selections. Stop paging when desired strip appears. Guide Location 3. Set strip guide to the location appearing in the instrument display. 4. Align strip with the strip guide, darkest steps entering the instrument first. 2-4

O P E R A T I O N NOTE: If uncertain which end to insert, follow software or hardware manufacturer s instructions. 5. Insert strip into instrument until it rests against drive rollers, [approximately 3"(76.20 mm)]. Keep right side of strip against strip guide. A one second delay occurs before drive rollers activate and automatically feed strip through the instrument. NOTE: If the strip gets jammed, press the two keys labeled "MENU." If strip still does not feed through instrument, slowly pull strip out front of instrument. Check strip condition, creased strips cannot be measured. 6. "PASS #1 OF 1 OK" appears in instrument display if measurement was successful. NOTE: If "INVALID READING", "BUFFER OVERFLOW", or "UNRECOGNIZABLE STRIP" appears after strip is measured, reread strip. If the same error message occurs after re-reading strip, refer to the Appendix B. When the strip has more than one pass to measure, the instrument displays the next pass to be measured. Repeat steps 3 through 5 until all passes have been completed. 7. Transmit data. Auto Transmit On "TRANSMITTING DATA" appears after each pass or at the end of all passes, depending on the setting of the "DAP" option in configuration. After data transmission is complete, the instrument display returns to the screen selected in Step 2. 2-5

O P E R A T I O N INSTRUMENT CALIBRATION The DTP densitometer has a unique feature called Auto-Cal. When the instrument performs a calibration procedure, the cal strip is measured; its cal values are automatically scanned, simplifying the calibration procedure. The instrument employs a number of self-checking procedures to verify calibration accuracy during normal use. When internal limits are exceeded, a calibration message appears in the instrument display. Calibration is recommended at this time. Calibration should be performed approximately once a week or when indicated by the instrument. NOTE: The Auto-Cal strip can be cleaned with a mild soap detergent. DO NOT clean below the bottom triangle. The attached label is not coated and will smear when moisture is applied. DO NOT get fingerprints on any portion of the strip, handle by the edge. To replace a worn or damaged Auto-Cal strip contact X-Rite or your local dealer. Order Part Number DTP32-100. 2-7

S E C T I O N T W O Density Calibration Procedure 1. At Main Menu level, repeatedly press the [p#] key until "p2" is displayed. Press [cal] to activate calibration. NOTE: The DTP32R is a reflection instrument only and will bypass the "den/tdot" and "Calibrating Transmission" screens. 2. Press [den] key. "CALIBRATING TRANSMISSION" is displayed as the unit automatically calibrates transmission (reads air). "INSERT CAL STRIP" appears. 2-8

O P E R A T I O N 3. Insert the Auto-Cal strip into the 35 mm slot until it stops against the drive rollers. The strip indicates which end to insert. 4. "Reading momentarily appears in the display. The calibration density values and "CALIBRATION OK momentarily appear. The density values displayed can be found on the Auto-Cal strip. NOTE: The DTP will automatically return to the Main Menu. If "UNRE- COGNIZABLE STRIP" appears in the instrument display, smudge marks may be causing an error message. Try cleaning strip, see page 2-6. 2-9

S E C T I O N T W O Transmission Dot Calibration (DTP32, DTP32TR, & DTP36 Only) When calibrating dot it is important that a cal wedge with a true 50% dot area (e.g.; UGRA Plate Control Wedge, GRA Dot Ref, etc.) is used. Transmission Dot Calibration Procedure 1. At Main Menu level, repeatedly press the [p#] key until "p2" is displayed. Press [cal] to activate calibration. 2. Press [Tdot] key. 3. Insert the base film into the strip slot. Use the alignment mark on the front of the unit to center the filmstrip. From the front edge of the filmstrip guide to the center of the optics is 1.98" (50.19 mm). Use this dimension to gauge the insertion depth. - Once the strip is properly positioned, press the [read] key. - "Reading..." is displayed. 4. Insert the 50% dot strip into the strip slot. Same rules apply for alignment (see Step 3). - Once the strip is properly positioned, press the [read] key. - "Reading..." is displayed and then the new "n" value. 5. Adjust "n" value if required by pressing the [@] or [$] keys. 6. Press the [exit] key to exit the dot cal procedure. 2-10

O P E R A T I O N STRIP SETUP (EDITING) The strip setup function is used to setup the parameters (passes, steps, etc.) of the paper and filmstrips that will be measured. A total of 6 paper and 6 filmstrips can be pre-set into the memory and selected during measurements. The DTP32R only has paper strips available. Several pre-defined film and paper strip definitions are available for selection. Certain guidelines must be followed when developing a strip for measurement. These guidelines apply to both paper and filmstrips. Refer to Appendix A for the design guideline requirements. After reviewing the strip design guidelines, continue on with this section for the strip editing procedure. Setup Procedure 1. At Main Menu level, continually press [p#] until "p3" appears, then press [edit]. 2-11

S E C T I O N T W O 2. Select type of strip to edit, press [pap] or [film]. NOTE: Deactivate the lock function if it is active. The lock function is used to prevent accidental changes to a strip setup. When the lock function is active the strip setup cannot be changed. A closed lock icon and "LOCK" in the display indicate a strip setup is locked. To deactivate the lock function, insert a piece of paper or film into the paper/film entrance approximately 1-1/4" (31.75 mm). This will activate the read switch. Press [LOCK], "lock appears in the display beneath the open lock icon. Each depression of the key alternates between "lock" and "LOCK". 3. Select the strip you want to edit by pressing [other] repeatedly. Press [go] after the desired strip has been selected. 4. Enter name for the selected strip. Up to 7 characters can be entered for the name. - Press the [@] or [$] to page through a list of available characters. - Press the [ >] to move blinking cursor to position required. After the name is entered, press [next] to advance to next setup option. 5. Enter number of passes that will be required on the strip. Press [@] or [$] to page through 1-16 pass selection. After pass # is selected, press [next] to advance to next setup option. 2-12

O P E R A T I O N 6. The "OTHER OPTIONS" menu is used to access additional setup options. Press [options] to access "OUTPUT ORDER", "N- FACTOR", "MIN/MAX", "MINUS PAPER", "EXTRA STEPS". The setup information for this option is shown on Page 2-14. Press [next] to advance to next setup option. 7. Enter name for pass. Up to 3 characters can be entered for this name. - Press the [@] or [$] to page through a list of available characters. - Press the [ >] to move blinking cursor to position required. After name is entered, press [next] to advance to next setup option. 8. Enter measurement type. Press the [@] key or [$] keys to select den, +dot, -dot or rfl (reflectance). After selection, press the [next] key to advance to next setup option. NOTE: The "cont" color selection is not available when a "+dot" or "-dot" measurement type is selected. 9. Enter the color of the pass. Press the [@] or [$] keys to page through: cyn, mag, yel, red, grn, blu, 3col, auto, cont, and blk. Press [next] to advance to next setup option. NOTE: Select "cyn", "mag", "yel", "red", "grn", "blu"or "blk" for cyan, magenta, yellow, red, green, blue or black strip color passes. Select "3col" for gray balance passes. Select "cont" for non-stepped passes. This setting stores all the A/D conversions taken during the "cont" pass. Select "auto" for a pass having a variety of colors or when the colors can change with application software options. 2-13

S E C T I O N T W O 10. Enter number of steps that are required for the pass. Press [@] or [$] to select number of steps (0-72). After number of steps is selected, press [next] key to advance to next setup option. NOTE: Selecting (0) steps interrupts the automatic feed function. This permits a strip to be inserted into the instrument, measured and then pulled back out the front of the instrument. Changing the number of steps/pass will reset the parsing menu for the selected strip to all steps being turned on. 11. Use this to enter the stop location that appears in the instrument display when a pass is being measured. Determine stop location by centering the pass step column under the alignment mark on the instrument front. Slide the strip guide next to the strip. Enter the number indicated by the strip guide pointer. See Strip Guide, Section 2.3. After stop location number is entered, press [next] to advance to next step. NOTE: If a 35mm filmstrip is to be used the stop location can be set to "slot." To access the slot setting, press the [] key one more time after "30" is displayed 12. Enter data output. This option allows individual filter values or all filter values for each pass to be output. Press [@] or [$] keys to select: all, 3col, vis, cyn, mag, or yel. After selection, press [next] key to advance to next setup option. NOTE: *If more that one passed was entered in Step 5, the display will go back to Step 7 for next pass position entry. If only one pass was entered, "EDIT COMPLETE" will display. 13. Press [save] to save strip and return to Page 3 of Main Menu. Press [review] to return to Step 4 and review strip definition. 2-14

O P E R A T I O N Other Options (from Step 6 on Page 2-12) 6a. N-FACTOR (This option for paper only). This option allows the user to adjust the optical dot Gain value to correlate with the Mechanical Dot Gain value, as viewed during magnification. Press [@] or [$] to decrease or increase the np value. Press [xfer] to transfer "np" value calculated using the "np" function. Press [$@] simultaneously to reset the 1.000 value. Press [next] key to advance to next setup option. NOTE: Calculated the "np" value using the np function in the utilities menu (see Section 2.7). 6b. OUTPUT ORDER. This option selects the output order. Press [@] or [$] keys to select "fwd or "rev." If auto color is selected, the forward option allows for first in first out. The reverse option allows first in last out. For any other color selection (e.g., cyn, mag, etc.), the forward option will output high density to low density. The reverse option will output low density to high density. Press [next] key to advance to next setup option. 6c. MIN/MAX. This option selects the Min/Max values. Press [@] or [$] keys to page through "off","min","max", and "mm". The "off"option voids "Min/Max" output with data. The "min" option outputs "Min" values. The "max" option outputs "Max" values. The "min/max" option outputs "Min" and "Max values. Press [next] key to advance to next setup option. 6d. MINUS PAPER. Use this to select the Minus Paper option. Minus Paper subtracts the paper value from all measurements. This gives measured values independent of paper values. Press [@] or [$] keys to select "on" or "off". Press [next] key to advance to next setup option. 2-15

S E C T I O N T W O 6e. EXTRA STEPS. Use this option to add one to nine additional patches after a normal gray or color scale. Press [@] or [$] keys to select "on" or "off". Press [next] key to advance to next setup option. NOTE: When Extra Step has been tuned on, two values will appear in the STEPS/PASS screen. The first value indicates the normal steps in the pass, the second value indicates the extra steps. "NP" FACTOR CALCULATION The "UTILITIES MENU", "np" function measures and calculates the apparent DOT Gain value. This data can then be entered using "OTHER OPTIONS", "N-FACTOR", see Strip Editing N-Factor. "n" Factor Measurement Procedure 1. At Main Menu level, continually press [p#] until "p2" appears. Press [util] to access the utilities menu. 2. Press [np] key. 3. Insert the paper or base material into the strip slot approximately 2" (50.80 mm). [1.976" (50.19 mm) is the exact dimension.] Use the alignment mark on the front of the instrument to center the paper strip. Press the [read] key when the paper is positioned properly, "Reading..." appears. 4. Position the 50% dot patch in the strip slot. Align the paper or material as described in Step 3. Press the [read] key when the paper is positioned properly, "Reading..." appears. 2-16

Press the [read] key when the paper is positioned properly, "Reading..." appears. 6. The "n" factor value for the 50% Dot appears in the display. Press [@] or [$] keys to alter the value. The "n" range is from 0.500 to 4.500. 7. Press [exit] key to exit "n" factor calculation procedure. DATA OUTPUT SELECTION (PARSING) The "Parse" option is used to select specific steps for data transmission. For example, if a pass consisted of 21 steps, steps 2, 5, 9, 14, and 19 could be selected, as could 1, 3, and 18, or any combination of the 21 steps desired. The parse option should only be used after a strip has been defined using the Strip Setup function (Section 2.6). NOTE: Modifying a strip's definition after it has been "parsed will void the parse option. If a strip has been modified, the parse option must be reestablished if it is desired. 2-17

Select the strip by pressing [other]. Press [go] after strip selection is made. 5. Press the right-hand key (i.e.; [CYN]) to select the pass name. - Press either of the two middle keys [@] or [$] to select the step number. - Press the left-hand key [SEND] to select output status. Upper case "SEND" will output data for this step, lower-case "send" will not output data. All steps are initially set to "SEND" (all data output). 6. After all passes are completed, press the right-hand key (i.e.; [BLK]) to advance to the "PARSING COMPLETE" menu. - Press the [save] key to save changes and return to the "UTILITIES MENU." NOTE: Press the [review] key to return to parsing menu for editing. 2-18

O P E R A T I O N MEASURING LEADERLESS STRIPS When the preferred use of a 30.5 mm (1.25") or greater leadered strip in not possible, the following alternate measurement method can be used to reliably read strips. 1. Perform normal strip category and strip selection. 2. Position strip guide as indicated. Leader with less than 30.5 mm 10 20 30 Strip Guide 3. BAUD (BAUD RATE) 9600/19.2/1200/2400/4800 Determines the output rate (characters per second) of the I/O port. Available outputs are: 9600, 19,200, 1200, 2400, and 4800. HAND (HANDSHAKE) xon/off/cts/busy Determines the status of the handshaking input of Pin 5 on the RS-232 I/O port. Handshake may be set to xon, off, cts (clearto-send), or busy. AXMT (AUTOMATIC TRANSMIT) on/off PAGE 3 Enables or disables automatic transmission of data after a reading is taken. When enabled "AXMT" will be viewed. When disabled "axmt" will be viewed. DPT (DECIMAL POINT) on/off Enables or disables the decimal point during printout. When enabled "DPT", the decimal point will be included in the data. When disabled "dpt", no decimal point will be included with the data. SEP (SEPARATOR) spc/com/tab/cr/crlf Separates each set of color data with a space, comma, tab, cr, or crlf. DLIM (DELIMITER) crlf / cl2 / cr PAGE 4 Varies the delimiter after each line of data. When set to "crlf", a carriage return then a line feed is sent after the line of data. "cl2" acts in the same manner as crlf except an extra crlf is sent at the end of all the data passes. When set to "cr", just a carriage return is sent at the end of a line of data. DEF (DEFAULT) off/on Default set to off "def" will cause the unit to default to the last format read for both strip categories (paper & film). Default set to On "DEF" will lock the formats at the point default was turned on. 3-2

When set to "m/m" the min, max and patch values will be transmitted. An override option is available for this function in the Other options function in the Paper/film Editor function. Each depression of [HAND] will page through "xon", "off", "cts", and "busy." 8. Set automatic transmit. Each depression of [AXMT] will alternate between "AXMT" (on) and "axmt" (off). 9. Press [P2] to advance to Page 3 configuration setup. 10. Set Decimal point. Each depression of [DPT] will alternate between "DPT" (on) and "dpt" (off). 11. Set separator. Each depression of [SEP] will page through "spc", "com", "tab", "cr", and "crlf." 12. Set delimiter. Each depression of [DLIM] will page through "crlf", "cl2", and "cr". 3-4

Set digit resolution. Each depression of [x10] will alternate between "x10" (off) and "X10" (on). 16. Set data after pass. Each depression of [dap] will alternate between "dap" (off) and "DAP" (on). 17. Press [p4] to advance to Page 5 configuration setup. 18. Set M/M. Each depression of [M/M] will alternate between "off", "min", "max", and "m/m". "off" voids Min/Max output with data. "min" outputs Min values, "max" outputs Max values, and "m/m" outputs Min and Max values. 19. Set lock. The lock function is used to prevent accidental changes to a configuration. A closed lock icon and "LOCK" in the display indicate the lock function is active. An open lock icon and "lock" indicate the lock function is inactive. To activate or deactivate the function, insert a piece of paper into the strip slot [approximately 1-1/4" (31.75 mm) or more]. This activates the read switch. Press [lock] or [LOCK]. Each depression of the key will alternate between "LOCK" and "lock". 20. Press the two left keys together to save the configuration changes. "Configuration Setting Saved" appears, then the display returns to Main Menu. NOTE: Anytime the keys labeled "MENU" are pressed simultaneously the configuration procedure will be exited and the configuration changes made (if any) will NOT be saved. Instrument must be connected to an external power source to save configuration settings. 3-5

S E C T I O N F O U R 4 General Maintenance Section Four Contents: Cleaning the Instrument Cleaning the Optics Reading Lamp Replacement Trouble shooting Tips X-Rite DTP series densitometers are covered by a one year limited warranty, excluding lamp. Any repair or warranty work within this time period should be referred to the factory or an authorized service center. Attempts at repairing the instrument by other than authorized personnel may void the warranty. X-Rite provides a factory repair service for X-Rite instruments. The X-Rite DTP series densitometer is a complex instrument and should be referred to the factory or an authorized service center for all circuitry repairs. X-Rite will repair any DTP series densitometer whose warranty has expired. Shipping costs to the factory or to an authorized service center shall be paid by the customer. The instrument shall be submitted in its original packaging, as a complete and unaltered unit. CLEANING THE INSTRUMENT The exterior of the instrument may be wiped clean with a cloth dampened with water or a mild cleaner whenever required. CAUTION: DO NOT use any ketone solvents to clean the unit. This will cause damage to the unit. 4-1

S E C T I O N F O U R CLEANING THE OPTICS To remove dust and lint from the optics and drive wheel assembly, follow the procedure approximately once a week. 1. Insert air supply into the paper insertion slot. Make sure the air is clean and moisture free. 2. Using a back and forth motion, spray air into insertion slot. Repeat several times to remove any dust and lint. 4-2

G E N E R A L M A I N T E N A N C E READ LAMP REPLACEMENT P/N 880-07 CAUTION: Lamp alignment is critical!! Lamp may appear bent, DO NOT attempt to straighten. 1. Turn unit upside-down. Using a Philips-head screwdriver remove four screws [2] from bottom cover [3]. Leave bottom cover [3] on unit. 2. Holding top [1] and bottom [3] covers in place, turn unit over and place it on the bottom cover [3]. Remove top cover [1] by lifting up on right side to unhook left side. [1] [5] [6] Hook [4] [7] [8] Lamp Connector [3] [2] 3. Locate optics assembly [4]. Remove screw and washer [5] in middle of lamp assembly P.C.B. [6]. 4. Lift out old lamp assembly [6] and discard. 5. Install new lamp assembly [6]. Carefully insert lamp [6] into housing [7]. Carefully insert lamp pins [8] into lamp connector. Gently press down on connector pins [8] to insure they are properly seated. 6. Secure lamp screw and washer [5]. 7. Using moisture free compressed air, carefully clean dust or plastic chips off circuit board and top cover [1]. Replace top cover on instrument, take care to insure left side of cover hooks in place. 4-3
