Updating Camera Firmware Thank you for choosing a Nikon product. This guide describes how to perform this firmware update. If you are not confident that you can perform the update successfully, the update can be performed by a Nikon service representative. See the camera manual for information on camera operations. Important The camera may be damaged if power is interrupted or camera controls are operated during the update. Do not turn the camera off, remove or disconnect the power source, or operate camera controls during the update. If the update is not completed successfully and the camera becomes inoperable, take the camera to a Nikon-authorized service representative for inspection. 1 Get ready To upgrade the camera firmware, you will need: The camera (before proceeding, be sure the camera has been paired with a smart device using SnapBridge 360/170; see the camera manual for details) A computer equipped with a card reader or card slot One of the following camera power sources: The AC adapter available for separate purchase A battery or batteries with sufficient charge to complete the update A Nikon-approved memory card that has been formatted using the KeyMission 360/170 Utility or SnapBridge 360/170 (see the camera manual for details, but note that all data on the memory card will be deleted when the card is formatted; before formatting the card, back up any data you wish to keep to a computer or other device) The camera User s Manual 1

2 Check the current camera firmware version You can view the camera firmware version on a computer, smartphone, or tablet. Computers Before proceeding, be sure that the KeyMission 360/170 Utility is installed on the computer and a memory card is inserted in the camera. See the camera manual for information on installing and using the software and connecting to the camera. The dialogs displayed by the KeyMission 360/170 Utility may vary with the software version and computer operating system. 1 Connect the computer to the camera via USB and launch the KeyMission 360/170 Utility. 2 Click Set. 2

3 Check that the firmware version listed next to Firmware version is the correct version for this update. 4 Remove (In the illustration above, the firmware version is represented as *.*.) the camera from the system, disconnect the USB cable, and turn the camera off. Smartphones and Tablets (Smart Devices) Before proceeding, be sure that SnapBridge 360/170 is installed on the smart device and a memory card is inserted in the camera. See the camera manual for information on installing and using the app and pairing the device with the camera. The dialogs displayed by the SnapBridge 360/170 app may vary with the app version and device operating system. 1 Pair the device with the camera and launch SnapBridge 360/170. Important Be sure that the camera airplane mode switch is off. 3

3 Download and extract the new firmware 1 Create 2 After 3 Open a new folder on your computer. 4 Copy the firmware to the memory card The firmware can be copied to the camera memory card using a computer equipped with a card reader or card slot. 1 Insert a formatted memory card in the card reader or card slot. If an application such as Nikon Transfer 2 starts automatically, exit the application before proceeding. 10/ 8.1 If displays the message shown in the illustration, click to close the dialog. 7/ Vista Under 7/ Vista, an AutoPlay dialog may be displayed. 5 Update the camera firmware During the update, do not: Remove the memory card Turn the camera off Unplug or disconnect the AC adapter Remove the battery Subject the camera to powerful electromagnetic noise Any of the above actions could cause the camera to become inoperable. 1 Insert the memory card containing the firmware into the camera memory card slot. Important Be sure that the camera airplane mode switch is off. 2 Press the photo and movie buttons at the same time. The camera status lamps will flash alternately red and green as the firmware is updated. The update is complete when the lamps turn off. 7

3 Confirm that the update was completed successfully. 3-1. Check the camera firmware version as described in Step 2, Check the current camera firmware version. 3-2. If the updated version is displayed, the update was successful. If the update was not successful, the status lamps will emit a continuous series of quick red flashes. Contact a Nikon service representative. 4 Format the memory card. This completes the firmware update. 8
