Revision history Revision history The following table presents the revision history of this document. Revision Date Description A01 August 11, 2010 Initial release Product description EMC Unisphere Analyzer gathers storage-system performance statistics and produces charts of the data. You can use these charts to identify and anticipate bottlenecks in the disk storage component of a computer system. Analyzer can also provide information for load balancing, capacity planning, or cost-benefit calculations. Analyzer version 1.0 has a web-based user interface that securely monitors performance of EMC CLARiiON storage systems locally on the same LAN or remotely over the Internet, using a common browser. Analyzer version 1.0 controls, accumulates and manages access to performance information about SPs, LUNs, and disks. Performance information can be archived to create a historical record and enable remote analysis. New performance information displaces old information in the active data log when the maximum amount of performance information is accumulated. Analyzer version 1.0 is available for EMC CX4 series storage systems. The web-based interface is downloaded to the browser when the storage processor (SP) on the CX4 series storage system is accessed. 2

New features and changes New features and changes Unisphere Analyzer 1.0: Is integrated with a completely redesigned user interface. Supports a pool-based fully provisioned LUN and adds its counters. It also adds counter support for MirrorView /Asynchronous and SnapView sessions. Adds FAST Cache counter support for RAID-group-based LUNs, SPs and pools. Sets default performance polling intervals to 300 seconds for both real-time and archive. CAUTION Be sure to follow the EMC configuration guidelines. Using improper settings can cause erratic behavior. 3

Environment and system requirements Environment and system requirements Since Analyzer is directly integrated with the Unisphere Client and Unisphere Server, refer to the Unisphere for Block release notes for a full list of client, network and operating system requirements. Unisphere management software requirements To retrieve archive files on EMC CX4, CX3, CX, or AX4-5 series storage systems, the Unisphere and Analyzer enablers must be installed on the storage system. The version of the EMC FLARE Operating Environment must be 04.28 or later for CX4 series storage systems, 02.23 for AX4-5 series storage systems, 02.24/02.26 or later for CX series storage systems, or 03.24/03.26 or later for CX3 series storage systems. Refer to the Unisphere for Block and Host Agent release notes for a full compatibility matrix. EMC recommends that you use the current shipping version of Unisphere Host Agent and Unisphere for Block. See the Unisphere for Block and Host Agent release notes for the full compatibility matrix. 4

Fixed problems Fixed problems This section lists significant issues that were fixed in this version or that were documented in a previous revision of the release notes. Visit the EMC Powerlink Issue Tracker website at http://powerlink.emc.com for the most recent updates and information on previous Unisphere Analyzer versions. Unisphere 1.0.0 addresses some problems that existed in Navisphere 6.29. They are listed in below table. Known problems and limitations Known problems and limitations This section identifies outstanding issues still open with this version, as well as important warnings associated with this product, its connectivity, and its compatibility. Visit the EMC Powerlink Issue Tracker website at http://powerlink.emc.com for the most recent updates and information on previous Navisphere Analyzer versions. Problems known in version 1.0.0.1.0493 Platforms Brief description Symptom details Unisphere/Navisphere Analyzer Analyzer shows inconsistent data for EMC MirrorView /A LUNs. 175459 Always Low Unisphere/Navisphere Analyzer When you open a real-time Performance Survey, Performance Overview, IO Size Distribution Summary or IO Size Distribution Detail chart, and then click the close button immediately, the chart does not close instantly, especially in a large configuration storage system. 369593 Always Low Inconsistent data was found between SPs for MirrorView/A data lag. When you open a real-time Performance Survey, Performance Overview, IO Size Distribution Summary or IO Size Distribution Detail chart, and then click the close button immediately, the chart does not close instantly, especially in a large configuration storage system. Meanwhile, the UI will give no response to any subsequent operation until the real-time chart drawing is complete. Solution (or workaround) None. Navisphere 6.26.0.2.8 Navisphere 6.26.20.1.19 Navisphere 6.28.0.4.32 Navisphere 6.28.10.3.19 Navisphere 6.28.20.1.40 Navisphere 6.29.0.6.3 Close the whole browser window directly or wait until the chart drawing is complete. 7

Known problems and limitations Platforms Brief description Symptom details Unisphere/Navisphere Analyzer The prompt messages returned by logging start/stop/status operations are inconsistent with actual running states. 371038 Always Low Unisphere/Navisphere Analyzer The commands archive -list, archive -file and archive -all cannot work in an ESRS/NAT environment. 332491 Always Medium Unisphere/Navisphere Analyzer The commands set, start and stop do not work correctly in an ESRS/NAT environment. 350940 Always Medium The prompt messages returned by logging start/stop/status operations are inconsistent with the real logging states, if those three commands are issued in a very short time interval from either the UI or CLI. The commands archive -list, archive -file and archive -all cannot work in an ESRS/NAT environment. The error message that appears is SP is unreachable In an ESRS/NAT environment, when you run the commands set, start or stop, an error message like End of data stream will appear. However, when you check the logging status with the get or status command, the command was executed successfully. Solution (or workaround) Wait at least 60 seconds, between issuing the two commands. Navisphere 6.26.0.2.8 Navisphere 6.26.20.1.19 Navisphere 6.28.0.4.32 Navisphere 6.28.10.3.19 Navisphere 6.28.20.1.40 None. Navisphere 6.26.0.2.8 Navisphere 6.26.20.1.19 Navisphere 6.28.0.4.32 Navisphere 6.28.10.3.19 Navisphere 6.28.20.1.40 Unisphere1.0.0.1.0493 None. Navisphere 6.26.0.2.8 Navisphere 6.26.20.1.19 Navisphere 6.28.0.4.32 Navisphere 6.28.10.3.19 Navisphere 6.28.20.1.40 8

Known problems and limitations Platforms Brief description Symptom details Unisphere/Navisphere Analyzer Performance samples of metaluns and pool-based LUNs stop appearing in real-time charts after running for approximately 24 hours. 371992 Rare High Unisphere Analyzer Analyzer in an off-array Unisphere server does not support the functions that are designed to work in on-array Unisphere. 373630/373640 Always Low When you open UI real-time charts on metaluns and pool-based LUNs for approximately 24 hours or longer, the real-time chart stops plotting points. You need to restart the CIMOM and reopen the real-time charts to check the latest data. It occurs rarely. If an off-array server is in the same domain where some on-array systems exist, when you try to access on-array support functions from the offarray server, the corresponding Analyzer buttons show as grayed out. In the same domain, if you try to use Analyzer Performance Data Logging from one onarray system, the off-array server also shows up in the target dropdown list. Consequently, when you select the off-array server, an error occurs. Solution (or workaround) Restart Unisphere CIMOM and then reopen the real-time chart. Navisphere 6.26.0.2.8 Navisphere 6.26.20.1.19 Navisphere 6.28.0.4.32 Navisphere 6.28.10.3.19 Navisphere 6.28.20.1.40 None. Exists in version: 9

Technical notes Technical notes This section includes important information that does not appear anywhere else. If Unisphere Analyzer enabler is installed on a storage system that has a previously installed Navisphere Analyzer enabler, both will appear in the Software properties screen. The latest enabler will appear as active; the older enabler will appear as inactive. You are not required to remove the old enabler. The new Unisphere Analyzer enabler works on storage systems running earlier Navisphere versions. A Navisphere Analyzer enabler will successfully be installed on a Unisphere system running FLARE 04.30, but it will not be activated. The Unisphere Analyzer enabler must be used on systems running FLARE 04.30. Concurrently monitoring hundreds of objects in real time may cause the management interface to become sluggish. If this becomes a problem, increase the real-time polling interval or decrease the number of objects being monitored. Unisphere Analyzer 1.0 cannot read log files (.npl files) from Navisphere Analyzer 5.X, 4.X, or earlier. Although every effort has been made to generate unique color combinations for the lines displayed in the Detailed Chart window, due to differences in video adapters, video monitors, and individual perceptions of color, occasionally lines will be displayed whose colors will be difficult to distinguish. This problem is most pronounced when a 256-color video mode is used and least visible when a True Color video mode is set. We recommend you use the highest color resolution possible for the desired screen resolution. Occasionally, when viewing Response Time, Queue Length, and/or Average Busy Queue Length for disks, a large spike may exist. This can disrupt the vertical scaling, making the non-spike values difficult to distinguish. Use the zooming feature on Detail Charts to distinguish the values. The Performance Overview window displays data that is gathered from an archive retrieved only from AX4-5 series, CX series, CX3 series or CX4 series storage systems running version 6.26 or later of Navisphere Management Server and version 6.23 or later Navisphere Analyzer Provider. If the data is not available, the chart window may still be opened, but the data will be all zeros. 10

Technical notes On systems running the X Window System for display, copying the graph image to the clipboard does work. However software that can paste the image is still somewhat uncommon. X Window System users may find saving the graph as a JPEG file more useful. When setting polling intervals, not all combinations of polling intervals are accurate. EMC suggests that the archive polling interval be a multiple of the real-time interval. You must have a minimum of JRE 1.6 update 15; however, EMC highly recommends using JRE 1.6 update 20. For more information about JRE requirements, refer to the Unisphere for Block Release Notes. You do not need to merge archives from different SPs in which the installed FLARE version is later than 03.24 or 02.24 to get the complete objects picture of the storage system, because the archive generated from any SP of one storage system will include all information and performance data of objects in that storage system. In the case of an SP failure, Analyzer supports the creation of archives on both SPs. EMC does not recommend merging two archives from different SPs. If no LUN is created on a storage system, Analyzer real-time related menus will be grayed out, and the generated archive will not contain any useful data. So, before using Analyzer, please make sure at least one LUN is created on the storage system. With Unisphere 1.0, the storage system can support thousands of LUNs and metaluns. Analyzer may experience performance issues on a storage system with a very large configuration. See the following suggestions to improve the Analyzer performance on a storage system with a large configuration: Set intervals. If a storage system has more than 4096 objects, set the archive interval and real-time interval to 10 minutes or greater. Create an archive every 12 hours so that each archive contains 80 to 90 samples. Smaller archives are easier to view and manipulate. Memory is critical for the UI when working with a large archive. Set the JRE memory to 600 MB or higher if working with an archive with a large number of objects. If memory is not adequate, you will see an out-of-memory exception, and operations in progress will not finish. Customize setting for open archive. When using the UI to open an archive, deselect Initially check all tree nodes in the archive tab from the Customize dialog box. This will improve the r 11

Technical notes response time when opening the chart; after the chart opens, manually selecting the objects and statistics to be viewed will also reduce response time. Do not use the select all items menu for a large configuration since this will be very slow. Use dump rather than archive open. Choosing dump provides more options for selecting object types and attributes. The UI dump is faster than the CLI dump, so using the UI to manually dump an archive file will also improve the response time. Limitation in Excel when opening.csv files. Excel can only open csv files with less than 65536 rows. Use the object option to specify the object type to reduce rows in the.csv file. If Excel cannot open the.csv file, open the source file in a text editor such as Microsoft Notepad or Wordpad. You can also choose to save the source file as several smaller files that conform to this row limit, and then open the smaller files in Excel. Make sure the temp folder has enough disk space to open, dump or merge large archives. Archive files are zipped files; they will be unzipped before they are opened, dumped or merged; unzipped files will be stored in the temp folder. In theory, 2 GB of free space are required for an unzipped archive file with around 8000 LUNs and 156 samples. If there is not enough space, the operation will fail. SP Time adjustment impact on Analyzer. When SP time is tuned, whether forward or backward, either manually or by automatically synchronizing with time server, the Analyzer UI open archive, realtime chart and archive merging functions will be affected. Once the adjusted value exceeds the performance polling interval, which will be either the real-time interval or the archive interval whichever is smaller, you may see the unexpected symptoms below: Real-time Chart. When tuning forward, an unexpected spike value might show. When tuning backward, the distance between two samples on the X axis would get longer than normal. Open Archive with UI. When tuning forward, the order of samples will be disturbed. When tuning backward, the distance between two samples on the X axis would get longer than normal. Merge Archive. The order of samples sorted by polling time in merged archive might be disturbed and when opening or dumping the merged archive, unexpected results might be seen. When the storage systems running Navisphere 6.29 or Unisphere 1.0 are in the same domain as the ones running earlier Navisphere releases, you will see an Analyzer Customize dialog box. Log in to one storage system running Navisphere 6.29 or Unisphere 1.0 as a 12

Documentation Documentation global user, modify some configurations and save them. Then log in to another storage system running an earlier version of Navisphere as the same global user to check the configurations; however the values are not consistent with what you just modified. The table below lists the documents and online help that apply to Unisphere Analyzer. The most up-to-date documentation and online help are available in the Technical Documentation and Advisories section of the EMC Powerlink website. Part number Name 300-004-210 EMC Unisphere Analyzer Command Line Interface (CLI) Reference N/A Unisphere help (available in the Unisphere UI) Software media, organization, and files The Unisphere Analyzer software is supplied on the following CDs.
