e Samsung is a strong supporter of producer responsibility. Samsung is committed to stepping ahead and performing strongly in accordance with our principles. Samsung principles include protection of people, the environment, and developing countries. Samsung has aggressively stepped forward in three categories of accountability for end-of-life product management: responsible recycling; significant volume of e- waste processed; and convenient recycling. 1. Responsible Recycling: Samsung was the first manufacturer to embrace the e-stewards standard. The e-stewards standard is by far the most intensive industry-recognized standard that controls proper management of e-waste and downstream material channel flow. The e-stewards program acts as a third party validation of the Samsung Recycling Direct (SRD) program, supporting our statements of principle and responsible recycling, which include protection of people, the environment and developing countries. All of Samsung Recycling Direct partners are committed to becoming certified as e-stewards recyclers. All e-waste, except for a fraction of the material, is recycled through SRD recycling partners that are fully certified by e- Stewards. Given that the e-stewards program is new, the remaining 2% of material processed will be processed only by recyclers who are in the e- Stewards certification process, until we are comfortable that we have enough fully certified e-steward recyclers to work with. 2. Significant Volumes: Samsung has moved forward aggressively to define obligations that apply to Samsung, and act upon them. Our program began in October of 2008, recycling 3 million lbs of e-waste. As of the year 2011, our program will recycle over 75 million lbs of e-waste. Our plan over the next three years is to increase our national average of e-waste weight processed to exceed 35% as compared to sales. We also plan to continue to expand our activities in all states, whether regulated or unregulated, with a goal of exceeding 30% of weight sold, in each state.
Chart 1: Total e-waste Processed through SRD Program Samsung activity in unregulated states has grown from 2.7 million lbs in 2010 to a projected 12 million lbs in 2011. The trend will continue to increase as our resource continues to develop for more Samsung initiative in the next several years. Chart 2: e-waste Processed by SRD Program in Unregulated States 3. Convenient Drop Off Opportunity: Samsung directly supports approximately 900 drop off locations for e-waste across the US, accepting any brand of covered products including televisions, monitors, computers, laptops, cell phones and tablets. We also cover home appliance returns in some cases. We have other opportunities as well. For example, we have a mail back
program that allows mail back of any Samsung product from any state at no cost, including televisions up to 50 lbs. We also work with our partner recyclers to support their collection activities, adding hundreds more collection opportunities across the US. Samsung offers takeback and recycling to consumers across the nation; and in some states to small business, schools, NFPs and small gov t. Samsung is currently expanding the SRD program to further address opportunities for all these entities. Samsung also participates strongly with NCER to promote responsible recycling opportunities to business, institutions and agencies. Legislative Efforts Samsung publicly supports legislation that would ban the export of unprocessed materials to developing countries, consistent with e-stewards guidelines and Samsung policy. Samsung is also involved with industry to strongly promote regulations (self or mandated) for responsible recycling and convenient drop of opportunity for e-waste, across all states in the US. Samsung is showing voluntary leadership across the US with full expectation that other manufacturers will join with Samsung to effectively address e-waste. Material Integration The e-waste material processed by Samsung typically enters a commodity channel upon completion of processing, in such a way that material can be used again for production of a variety of new products. Samsung encourages integration of processed e-waste into manufacturing, and some of our new electronics products include recycled materials. Samsung also has a program to develop eco-packaging. We seek to incorporate recycled materials into packaging, moving away from petroleum based inks, and we are exploring downstream uses for Styrofoam packaging that our recyclers may collect as a normal part of their business. Please see our General Provisions for Eco-Packaging, for more information on packaging. Material and Product Reuse Responsible end-of-life also includes a plan for refurbishment and reuse. Samsung partner recyclers refurbish over 3% of the e-waste processed. Samsung recycling
activity will result in approximately 2.1 million lbs of e-waste being refurbished for reuse by consumers in 2011. Samsung provides User Manuals, to assist in trouble shooting, which is an important part of maintaining equipment and facilitates longer product life-span. Samsung is supportive of repair of equipment provided that is performed safely, by a professional service person. See user manual for safety instructions.
