Sony Ericsson W880i Quick Start Guide In just a few minutes we ll show you how easy it is to use the main features of your phone. This is a Vodafone live! with 3G phone, so you can take advantage of the faster 3G network as well as the latest new services. You ll see how quickly you can make video calls, take pictures and video clips with the built-in digital camera, and then send them to your family and friends as multimedia messages (MMS). You ll also be able to explore Vodafone live!, and change your phone by simply downloading new ringtones, games and wallpapers. Finally, we ll show you how to transfer music files to your phone and use it as a Walkman music and video player! 1

Getting started 1. Insert the SIM card Insert your SIM card as shown. Make sure the gold contacts are facing down and the cut-off edge is correctly aligned. 2. Insert the battery Insert the battery as shown and fit the cover. The battery may need charging. A full charge can take up to 2.5 hours. 3. Turn it on Press and hold the key. Do the same to turn it off. When prompted, select Normal mode select Flight mode only when you don t want the mobile signal activated. 4. Insert a Memory Stick Micro (M2 ) To enlarge the phone s memory, open the flap on the side of the phone and insert a Memory Stick Pro Micro, until it clicks in place. Push it in to remove it. 2

Using the phone Navigation key: press in [l] to OK an action or select a highlighted option. In standby mode this opens the main menu. The navigation key also controls the Walkman Music Player (see page 19). Press the edge of the navigation key to move around icons and menu lists. In standby mode, press p > Vodafone live! (offline), u > My Files, q > Contacts, t > Create new message. Soft keys: press to select the option displayed in the bottom left or right of the screen. In standby mode the left soft key opens the main Menu, the right soft key opens the Toolbar. The Toolbar lets you view and open bookmarks, shortcuts, applications, and recent calls and messages. Press to return to the standby screen. Press t u to move between the Toolbar tabs. The first tab lets you open Vodafone live!, web pages and bookmarks. The second tab shows new messages, alerts and missed calls. The third shows your running applications. The fourth shows your shortcut menu. Call key: press to make or answer a call. Pressing in standby mode opens your Call Logs. End key: press to end a call. Press this key at any time to return to the standby screen. 3

Back key: press to take you back to a previous menu or screen. Press and hold to return to the standby screen. Clear key: press to delete a character of text. Press and hold to delete all text. Press this key to delete contact entries and other items. Walkman key: press to open the Walkman Music Player (see page 19). Press again to return to the main menu. Camera key (on the right side of the phone): press to start the camera, and to take a photo or video clip. Volume key (on the right side of the phone): move up and down to adjust to volume, and to zoom in and out of photos. Press once in standby mode to show the phone status. 4

Voice calls, 3G & Video calls Say how you re feeling with a voice call - or show how you re feeling with a video call! With the 3G network growing all the time, it s never been easier. 5

3G The 3G network is designed to carry data faster. This will let you download content faster from Vodafone live!, like ringtones and videos, as well as being able to use some great new services. With Vodafone live! with 3G you can have face to face video calls, listen to full track music downloads and stream video which means that you can watch football match highlights and the latest music videos without having to store them on your phone. You ll also be able to access fantastic new services such as Mobile TV! (see Other Services). 3G connection When you re in an area with 3G coverage, the 3G symbol appears next to the signal bars. This means you can take advantage of the faster, richer experience of the Vodafone 3G service. Of course, you ll still be able to use the existing network at other times. The 3G network is growing rapidly contact Vodafone for more information on where the service is available. 6

Voice calls Make a call In standby mode, enter the number using the keypad and then press the key. Press to end the call. To use your Call list, press in standby mode. Scroll to the number you want and press the l key to start dialling. You can also press q to access your Contacts from standby mode. During a call, pressing l brings up an option menu including turning on the loudspeaker and muting the microphone (you can also press the button to do this). Answer a call Press. 7

Video calls 3G connection When the 3G symbol appears you can make and receive video calls. The other person you re calling must have a compatible 3G phone and be in a 3G area too. Start the Video call screen In standby mode, press Menu > Video call to bring up the Video call screen. The small screen shows what the person you re calling will see (you ll see them in the larger screen). Press Camera to switch to the rear camera view. Use a headset for the best sound quality. Call a number Press. Enter a number or choose a contact, then press Call. If the 3G network is not available, you ll be asked if you want to make a voice call. You can also start a video call from other applications, such as Contacts or Calls list. Just highlight the number and press More > Make video call. Adjusting the image Press p q to zoom in and out. Press More for an option menu of other adjustments. Answer a video call Press. Press Camera to turn your camera off or on (if you don t want the caller to view you). 8

Camera & Multimedia Messaging (MMS) See it, shoot it, send it! With your built-in digital camera you can capture photos and video clips as they happen, and then share them straight away with your friends and family... 9

Using the camera Turn on the camera Turn the phone sideways, then press the camera key to turn on the camera (in standby mode). Press the key to turn the camera off. Adjust the image Use the volume key to zoom in or out, and press the navigation key t or u to adjust the brightness. For other settings, see the next page. Take a photo Press the camera key to take the photo. Your photo is automatically saved in Menu > My Files > Camera album. (Press View in the camera screen to see your photos.) To delete the photo, press, or press to take another one. Send the photo Press Send. See the MMS section for further details. Advanced modes When you ve taken your picture, press More > Edit in PhotoDJ for a range of editing options. You can also upload it to an online blog page by choosing More > Blog this. Take and send a video clip In camera mode, press the navigation key q (press p to return to camera mode). To start recording, press. Press again to stop. It s saved in Menu > My Files > Camera album. To see your clip, press More > Play. To delete it, press send it, press Send. To edit it, press More > VideoDJ., or to Other camera settings When the camera is active, press Settings. Use the navigation key to choose a setting, then press l to select it. Here are the main ones: Shoot mode: choose Normal/Panorama/Frame/Burst (multishot). For video, choose For MMS (default) to be able to send a clip. Picture size: 2 MP is the highest quality, but takes up more memory. Night mode: switch on or off. Self-timer: switch on or off. Press the 0 key for a guide to other key shortcuts. View Settings 11

Text entry Predictive text (T9) Writing a message with predictive text is much easier, because it uses an internal dictionary to work out what word you want to use. You simply press the keys with the letters you want once. To cycle through alternative letter combinations, press q. To change from predictive text (T9) to abc (multiple key press) entry, press and hold. Symbols For a space, press. To cycle through common symbols, press 1 repeatedly (press 1 then q to cycle through them in predictive text mode). For all symbols, press More > Add symbol. Capitals and numbers To cycle through Abc, abc or ABC, press press and hold the number key.. To enter a number, 12

Messaging 1. Start a new message In standby mode, press t, or go to Menu > Messaging > Create new. Choose Message. 2. Add the text Write your message using the keypad, then press u. To send this as a text message, press Continue, then follow Step 6. To add pictures, videos or sounds (MMS messaging), press and hold q to highlight icons in the lower menu bar. Hi there - wait till you see this! 3. MMS messaging Select the icon to add a photo, or for videos and sounds. Select to take a new photo or to record a new sound. Select a photo, sound or video clip and press l to add it to your message. Note: press Yes if asked to resize a photo, and make sure you re using For MMS mode for your videos. You can use the same process to add other items up to the size limit set by your service provider. 4. Preview To see (and hear) your message, press the icon. To go back to the message screen, press Stop. To delete an item, select it with the navigation key and press. Continue Add picture More 13

Messaging 2 5. Send the message Press Continue. To send to a mobile > Enter phone no.. To send to an email address > Enter E-mail addr.. To use a number or email address from your phonebook > Contacts lookup. Then press Send. Note: if you re sending the message to a person whose mobile isn t MMS compatible, they ll be sent a web address to view it on. To send your message to more than one person, press More > Add recipient and add more mobile numbers or email addresses. Vodafone Push Email (also known as CPE) With Vodafone Push Email you can now have email automatically forwarded to your phone. Go to Menu > Messaging > Email > Settings then select Create Account. Enter your email account details (you may need to contact your email service provider). Once the service is set up, you can send and read your emails in the Messaging folder. 14

Vodafone live! & Downloads Get the latest ringtones, the latest weather or the latest score! Vodafone live! has everything you need, full of information, games, downloads and services. Find out how easy it is to get what you want, whenever you want it... 15

Vodafone live! Connect to Vodafone live! In standby mode, simply press p and select Homepage. To exit, press More > Exit browser, or press and hold the key. Browsing Use the navigation key to select a link, then press l to open it. Press the key to go back a page. Options Press More for the browser options menu. To go to a saved bookmark > Go to > Bookmarks. To save a page as a bookmark > Tools > Add bookmark. To go to a new web address, press Go to > Enter address. Go to offline links To view selected Vodafone live! links without connecting, press p in standby mode. Choose a Vodafone live! service and press l to connect to it. To go directly to your bookmarks, press p in standby mode, and then choose Bookmarks. You can also press Toolbar in standby mode and select your bookmarks or links. Note: your view of the Vodafone live! screen may be slightly different. For the latest details of Vodafone live! service, please go to your local Vodafone website. 16

Downloads With Vodafone live! you can make your phone unique by downloading new ringtones, games, wallpapers and more. Here are some of the built-in links: Wallpaper: > Menu > My Files > Pictures > Download Pictures. Ringtones: > Menu > My Files > Music > Download Ringtones. Games: > Menu > My Files > Games > Download Games. Music: > Menu > My Files > Music > Download Music. Choose a download, press l to connect to it. Follow the instructions to download. Streaming video/audio Go to My Files > Videos > Download Videos, and follow the instructions. Your video or audio stream will automatically start playing. Using your downloads Select your new ringtone in My Files > Music > Ringtones > More > Use as > Ringtone. Select your new wallpaper in My Files > Pictures > More > Use as > Wallpaper. 17

Other services live! Postcard Now you can send a photo from your phone as an actual postcard! Go to Menu > Messaging > Create new > live! Postcard. Add the photo and text > Send. Add the address > Send. Vodafone will have it printed on a postcard and sent by mail. live! Studio Upload photos to an online album so you and your friends can see them. Go to Menu > My Files > Camera album. Choose the photo you want, then > More > Send > live! Studio. To see your album on Vodafone live!, go to Menu > Messaging > live! Studio. You can also log on to your homepage on your local Vodafone website and select live! Studio. Mobile TV A great way to get video news and entertainment, TV clips and sport. Connect to Vodafone live! and choose Mobile TV. Choose a clip this will be streamed to you directly, so you don t have to store it. Full Track Music Downloads Listen to the music you want whenever you want and wherever you are. Go to Music on Vodafone live!, then select and buy a track from the catalogue. Download it, save it and play it whenever you choose. Use your stereo headphones for the best playback. 18

Walkman You can use the Walkman player on your phone by downloading music and videos from Vodafone live!. Otherwise you will need to install some software on your PC to transfer music and videos from your PC to the memory in your phone. Please see the User Guide for full details, and for instructions on installing the drivers and using the Disc2Phone software, and also attaching the USB cable. Download music from Vodafone live! In standby mode, press Menu > Music > Download Music. Choose a track and follow the instructions to download it. Create playlists In standby mode, press the Walkman key. Press More > My music > Playlists > New playlist, then enter the name of your new playlist. Press OK, then mark the tracks you want to add, then press Add. To play your playlist, press Play. Use the navigation key to control playback: press the centre l key to play or pause a track or video. Press u to go to the next track, or press and hold to fast forward. Press t to go back or press and hold to rewind. Press p or q to scroll through your playlist tracks. Pressing the Walkman key minimises or restores the music player, so you can use other functions on your phone while listening. Use the supplied remote control and headphones for the best listening experience. 19

Other functions Silent mode In standby mode, press and hold the key. You ll see the silent icon appear on the phone screen. Press and hold the same key again to restore your ring tone. Keyboard lock In standby mode, press the and then the right hand soft key. You ll see the lock icon on the screen. Press the same keys again to release the keyboard. Vodafone Radio DJ: Vodafone Radio DJ is a new service that lets you listen to hundreds of thousands of great music tracks on your phone, like your own personal radio station. You control the mood, style, or even decade of music if you don t like one track, just skip to the next one. To start Radio DJ, press Menu > Music > Radio DJ. You then define a channel by choosing the moods or styles you want (say, Relaxed + Hip-Hop + 90s) and start listening. Using the Options key you can also give each track you hear a rating. This information is stored by the Radio DJ service, and will help make sure that you get more of the music you like. If you like a song and want to save a copy on your mobile (or PC) you have the option to add it to your wishlist and download it from there.
