The role of ICT in managing the complex Smart Grid Infrastructure Nampuraja Enose Infosys Labs

Smart Grid The Smart Grid isn t a thing, but rather a Vision for the power system of the future Its a mix of a broad range of technologies, design concepts and operating practices Fundamentally smart grid is an amalgam of Information and Communication technologies with Power system technology real-time, two-way communications throughout the grid intelligent devices continually interacting with each other creating an enterprise-wide information system SMART GRID Electrical Infrastructure + ICT Infrastructure Allow utilities to understand, optimize, and regulate demand, supply, costs, security and reliability Grids are "smart - they don't only transport electricity but also information 2

When grids get Smart Adaptive Predictive Self-Healing intelligently and rapidly respond to changing conditions better situational awareness and proactive actions automatic restoration from disturbances Advanced Components Reliable Integrated Interactive efficiently mitigates peak demand and load variability information, management and control functions real-time communication between stakeholders Advanced Sensors & measuring devices Integrated communica tions Optimized best use of resource and equipment Secure resilient to physical and cyber security attacks Distributed Reduce losses Improve ROI accommodates a wide variety of generation real-time monitoring, remote management and control optimize CapEx and OpEx Improved Interfaces & Decision support Advanced Control methods Environment friendly transforms the way energy is consumed 3

Advanced components Smart Grid New services Advanced software/ systems Integrated Communication Smart devices/ improved Intelligence A complex interoperable system of systems with a common understanding between its major building blocks Advanced control 4

Smart Grid - variety of enterprise applications Smart Grids are about power. but also Enterprise Applications 5

Smart Grid - a mountain of Infrastructure Generation Hundreds Complexity in Infrastructure Transmission Applications Complexity of control functions Huge volumes of operational data Distribution Increase in non-operational data Multi-stakeholder interactions Customers Increased Security concerns 6

Smart Grid- Conceptual Reference model NIST responsible for the many pieces of "the world's largest and most complex machine" are able to work together. NIST identifies 75 standards Specifies 15 high-priority gaps and harmonization issues SGIP setup to provide an open forum in developing additional standards needed NIST- In all, it is anticipated that hundreds of standards will be required to build a safe and secure Smart Grid that is interoperable, end to end. 7
