Blackboard Faculty Tutorial Adding Images and External Content to a Test Images and external content can be added to questions and responses of a test in Blackboard provided that the correct options are enabled. NOTE: This tutorial requires that a test has already been created in the Test or Pool Manager. Enabling External Content in a Test Before images can be added to a question, the ability to do so must be enabled within a given exam. This option is exam-specific, not course-specific. 1. Under the Control Panel, click on Course Tools. Then, click on Tests, Surveys, and Pools. 2. On the Tests, Surveys, and Pools screen, click on either Tests or Pools depending on where the exam questions reside. A d d i n g E x t e r n a l C o n t e n t t o a T e s t - P a g e 1

3. Find the exam in which external content is desired. Click on the Action Menu button, followed by Edit. NOTE: If the exam has already been deployed, a warning message may appear. If students have not begun taking the exam, click the Next button. If students have begun taking the exam, it might be best to defer changes to a different exam as changes will not apply to those students who have already completed the exam. 4. On the Test Canvas screen, click on the Creation Settings button. 5. On the Test Creation Settings screen, find the section entitled Images, Files, and External Links: 5.1. Check the box that says Add images, files, and external links to questions to allow images, files, and links to be added to the question text. A d d i n g E x t e r n a l C o n t e n t t o a T e s t - P a g e 2

5.2. Check the box that says Add images, files, and external links to answers to allow images to be added to the question response text (i.e. adding a picture as an answer in a multiple choice question). 6. When finished, click Submit and verify that changes were made successfully via the indicator on the top of the screen. Adding External Content to a Test Question Once the appropriate setting has been enabled, external content can be added to a test on a questionby-question basis. If a question already exists, click the Action Menu button next to that question in the Test Canvas, click Edit and proceed to step 3 below. 1. On the Test Canvas of a given test, hover over the Create Question menu and select the desired question type. 2. On the question creation screen, enter the question text and responses specific to the question type. 3. Below the Question Text and Point Value fields, external content can be added using the File and External Link options. 3.1. Click on the Browse button to attach a local file, such as a saved image. A d d i n g E x t e r n a l C o n t e n t t o a T e s t - P a g e 3

3.2. Under the Action menu, select whether to Create a link to this media file or Display image within the page. 3.3. External link URLs can be added in the External Link field. 3.4. If an external link is entered, type in a name in the Link Name field, which will display the text as hyperlinked using the URL in the External Link field (optional). 4. When finished with the question, click Submit. Adding External Content to Responses Once the appropriate setting has been enabled, external content can be added to the response(s) area of a test. 1. On the Question Creation screen, scroll down to the options below the Answer area. 2. Add a file and/or URL as desired. 3. Click Submit when finished with the question. Frequently Asked Questions Q1. When I upload an image to a question and I have it set to display within the page, where does it appear? A1. If the uploaded image is set to display within the page, it will appear directly below the question text, but above the response area. A d d i n g E x t e r n a l C o n t e n t t o a T e s t - P a g e 4

Q2. When I upload an item to a question and I have it set to link to the file, where does the link appear? A2. The link to the file will appear in the same place as an image set to display on the page (see screenshot above). Q3. When I upload an image to a response, where does it appear? A3. If the image is set to display on the page, it will appear directly below the response text. In the screenshot below, an image has been attached to response one of a multiple choice question. If no response text in entered, it will appear as the response itself. If the image is set to display as a link, the link will appear in the same area as the image.
