Semicolon (;) Rules 1. Use a semicolon to join independent clauses that are closely related in meaning. 1A. Use a semicolon between independent clauses that are closely related in meaning if they are not joined by FANBOYS. (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) First, I had a sandwich and a glass of milk, and then I called you for the homework assignment. Use a semicolon to take the place of a period to join two or more clauses that are closely related. Manuel looked out at the downpour.
