D A T A S H E E T PROGRESS DATADIRECT SHADOW A SINGLE, UNIFIED MAINFRAME INTEGRATION ARCHITECTURE Growth, mergers, new technologies all add to the increasing problem of integration complexity. Left unchecked, this gridlock of interconnectivity can drain infrastructure agility and lead to competitive disadvantage. Progress DataDirect Shadow, a mainframe middleware software, addresses this problem with a single, unified architecture that simplifies and accelerates the integration of mainframe data, business logic, and screens with new Java,.NET or Web applications. Using industry standards interfaces SOAP, XML and SQL, Shadow enables organizations to easily extend their mainframe systems to participate with SOA, business intelligence (BI) initiatives and/or composite application development. Balancing the return on investment (ROI) and the quick time-to-market requirements presents a daunting challenge to IT organizations when faced with SOA and data integration initiatives that involve mainframe systems. The single, unified integration architecture of Shadow allows organizations to rapidly redeploy and reuse existing mainframe assets without the need for multiple, redundant point integration solutions, reducing the costs to maintain these products and eliminating potential points of failure. The Shadow server component is the world s most advanced mainframe integration runtime environment and the foundation element for building a real-time mainframe integration architecture supporting industrystandard Web services/soa, real-time XML events and direct SQL access. Residing on the mainframe as a z/os started task, the Shadow server has been designed for maximum reliability and minimum resource utilization, without compromising its ability to support thousands of users and thousands of transactions per second. Unique to Shadow is its patent-pending integration thread design, referred to as a Logical Dispatchable Unit, this hybrid thread model allows Shadow to run its integration work in Service Request Block (SRB) mode,

and divert up to 99% of its integration processing to the ziip specialty engine resulting in lower capacity usage and higher performance. The Shadow architecture maintains all the code necessary for secure, reliable, high performance communication with the z/os subsystems that are the custodians of the important mainframe data and applications all with reduced mainframe TCO. SHADOW STUDIO Shadow Studio is a consolidated development environment and comprehensive IDE for the Shadow mainframe integration suite. Built on the Eclipse standard, the Studio supports both Visual Studio.NET and J2EE frameworks to simplify application development using legacy data, business logic, and screens. To meet the increasing requirements of mainframe SOA, the Shadow Studio has been enhanced to include an industry-standard Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) Designer for orchestration of Web services, both distributed and mainframe, allowing organizations to create long-running macro Web services that underpin business process optimization.

Progress DataDirect Shadow is a single platform with a common architecture and deployment method capable of supporting multiple integration paradigms, including SOA with bi-directional Web services, direct SQL data access, real-time event capture and publishing, as well as Web enablement. Key Shadow features for SOA and data include the following: SHADOW FEATURES Shadow for SOA Studio IDE Automatically generates Web services components and WSDL from mainframe datasources. Business Logic Simplifies the transformation of mainframe programs (business logic, COMMAREA, COBOL) into re-usable Web services. Screens Simplify the transformation of mainframe screen programs (3270, 5250) in to re-usable Web services. Data Provides a SOAP interface to mainframe data (DB2, Adabas, VSAM or IMS/DB) for increased developer productivity. Web Services Consumption Supports bi-directional Web services, enabling the mainframe to consume distributed web services and transform them dynamically into COBOL copybooks. Web Services Orchestration Is fully integrated into the Shadow Studio, an industry standard BPEL Designer to simplify orchestration of platform independent, heterogeneous Web services. Shadow for Data ANSI 92 SQL Engine A consistent data access method in support of the ANSI 92 SQL standard across all Shadow supported databases > Adabas, DB2, IAM, IMS/DB, VSAM Industry-leading Client Drivers Shadow includes the DataDirect Connect wire-protocol driver technology, supporting: > ODBC 3.5.2 for 32-bit and 64-bit computing > JDBC 3.0 Type 4 for 32-bit and 64-bit database drivers > ADO.NET data providers Shadow opens the ziip specialty engine to additional workloads beyond DB2, allowing mainframe data queries to IMS/DB, VSAM, Adabas Real-time Event Integration Comprehensive change/data/ capture facility for the real-time capture and publication of mainframe events to support Adabas, DB2, VSAM, IMS/DB, IDMS COST-EFFECTIVE WEB SERVICES ORCHESTRATION WITH BPEL One of the primary business benefits of SOA is business process optimization, a major contributor to business agility. Process improvement starts with the ability to map business processes to the technology that supports them. With Shadow, mainframe business processes both those within legacy business logic, as well as those locked within 3270 screens can be transformed into re-usable Web services and easily orchestrated into longrunning, macro Web services using industry standard BPEL for deployment within the System z platform or within any leading BPM application.

Shadow takes advantage of the zaap by instantiating a JVM (Java Virtual Machine) under Shadow control that will execute on the specialty engine. The z/os operating system has been enhanced to automatically make the JVM eligible for processing on the zaap processor(s) so the deployment of BPEL or any Java workload to the zaap engine(s) is straightforward. With the zaap specialty engine, the XML processing requirements of BPEL orchestration no longer hits the General Purpose Processor, but is handled within the unmeasured and unrestricted performance environment of the specialty engine, reducing MSU consumption and improving performance. LOWERING MAINFRAME TCO AND IMPROVING SOA PERFORMANCE Shadow incorporates new patent-pending technology that uniquely exploits mainframe specialty engines to provide customers with the ability to dramatically reduce mainframe total-cost-of-ownership (TCO) and significantly improve the performance of SOA and data connectivity. The zaap processor can process Java workloads while the ziip processor handles enclave SRB workloads most commonly found within DB2. The primary characteristics of these specialty engines are: > > Workload deployed on the ziip and zaap is not counted towards MSU consumption or other software costs. > > ziip and zaap specialty engines run at full capability and are not limited by microcode to run at the speed of the general-purpose processors on the System z platform. > > The general-purpose processor no longer needs to perform work that is dispatched on the ziip and zaap, lowering the measured MSUs and associated software costs. As the first mainframe integration middleware to capitalize on the inherent performance and cost advantages of the IBM specialty engines, Shadow opens the ziip specialty engine to SOA and additional data workloads beyond DB2, including mainframe data queries to IMS/DB, VSAM, Adabas and IDMS; and processing-intensive SOAP/XML parsing of CICS, IMS/TM, Natural, IDMS business logic and screens.

With Shadow, the ziip can be harnessed regardless of interface or type of client, allowing it to operate as a virtual, fungible appliance for z/ OS. As a result, in one instance it is dispatched to handle Web services processing, and in another instance dispatched to handle the integration associated with a non relational SQL query, or a Change Data Capture related Event. And with the ziip being on the same coherent memory platform with the data and sharing the same Central Electronic Complex (CEC), there is a tremendous advantage in terms of efficiency and performance. A NEW STANDARD FOR MAINFRAME INTEGRATION Progress DataDirect continues to lead the industry with innovative technologies for mainframe modernization and data integration, providing direct customers and ISVs with proven products to underpin business critical applications. Shadow extends that tradition of excellence with a new standard in mainframe integration, allowing the System z platform to more fully participate in SOA and data initiatives with better performance and lower TCO.
