B.C. SECTION NEWSLETTER Spring 2014 Message From Our International Delegate Volume 17 Number 01 t's been a busy start to the year particularly at the IMSA International office. Late last year, Ithe IMSA Board of Directors selected Michael Volling of San Clemente, California to become the new Executive Director of IMSA. Mike has a long history with IMSA as a member of the Sustaining Section and as the Vice President of the Educational Foundation. Mike assumed his new role on January 6th of this year and has been extremely busy getting up to speed and preparing for the unique challenges that are inherent with an organization such as ours. Elsewhere in this edition, you will also see an announcement from the Executive Director that the Board of Directors has voted unanimously to move the International office from Newark, New York to Rockledge, Florida near Cocoa Beach. The topic of relocation has been a focal point of the IMSA's strategic planning for quite some time and this decision came at the recommendation of the Relocation Work Group that studied and compared the immediate and future needs of IMSA to a variety of areas with suitable facilities across the United States. On the local front, I look forward to seeing you all at the IMSA B.C. Section Spring AGM, Technical Sessions and Trade Show at the Executive Plaza Hotel in Coquitlam on April 29th. Certification Corner Winter is over and I for one am quite happy to be on this side of the country! We are well into running the Spring Certification Schools and Trade Show and Technical Sessions. A Signs and Pavement Markings Level 2 has just finished and a Traffic Signal Technician Level 1 and a Traffic Signal Field Technician Level 2 are scheduled for the end of April. We will also be running a 1 day Traffic Signal Field Technician Level 3 for those more deeply involved in controllers, cabinets and detection systems. This certification school does not run often so now is the time to register! The IMSA International has recently updated the Public Safety Telecommunicator Level 1 Certification. This certification is designed to help train Telecommunicators and call takers for fire, rescue, emergency medical, law enforcement, public safety answering points and other public safety operations. If this is something you or your agency would be interested in, email certification@imsa.bc.ca and let us know. The best way we have of gauging the need for any particular certification or special education project is by the number of people on the waiting lists. If you are interested in a certification or credits for renewal, submit a request on our online registration page at: http://www.imsa.bc.ca/registration/register.html We are always looking for moderators to present the IMSA Certification programs. If you hold a valid certification, have some significant practical experience that you would like to share, have a desire to help mold the next generation of practitioners and enjoy talking shop, this might be a calling for you! About Certification Renewal IMSA Certifications are valid for a period of 3 years after which time you must renew your certification. Assuming that you are not going for a higher level certification, the most convenient method is to accumulate TARP points during the 3 years and apply them to the renewal. Another method is to audit an appropriate certification school to attain 16 hours of class time. IMSA will keep track of your TARP points IF you are a member in good standing (annual dues paid up) and REMAIN a member for the entire period. We have recently had a couple of instances where TARP points were not accumulated because of membership lapses. If you are not a member, YOU must keep track of your educational endeavors yourself. It is very time consuming and not always possible to recreate this record after the fact. If you attend any training related to your certification, be sure to sign a TARP sheet and have the trainer contact us with the details. Keep up to date on renewal with the International s Renewal Newsletter. There is a link on the IMSA B.C. Newsletter email and on the International website.
