DRIVE FEATURES - OPERATOR INTERFACE The VLT 2800 drive The micro-processor-based, high frequency IGBT-based, PWM AC drive uses state-of-the-art Voltage Vector Control to supply full-rated motor voltage at rated frequency, full motor performance without derating, high efficiency for both drive and motor, and a nearly perfect output sine wave. The diode-bridge rectifier and DC line reactor (most models) provide a high displacement power factor at all speeds and loads and minimize power line harmonics. The VLT 2800 drive utilizes a common user interface and a quick setup feature to allow fast, easy installation. Display The VLT 2800 drive uses a large, bright, six-digit LED display. It is easy to read under all light conditions. Setup and operation is quick and easy. Commonly accessed parameters are grouped together and are simply accessed by pressing the QUICK SETUP key. In normal operation (display mode), the display can show output frequency (Hz), output current (A), output voltage (V), DC bus voltage (V), or output power (kw). LED Indication Three LEDs are provided on the VLT 2800 drive for indication of power applied, warning and fault. Upon power up, all LEDs will briefly light as a lamp test. Alarm - Will glow red when the drive has registered a fault condition which has caused the drive to shut down. Warning - Will glow yellow to indicate a situation exists that exceeds the normal drive/system parameters, and that if condition continues, a trip is imminent. On - Will glow green to indicate that the VFD is connected to AC power (line voltage is present). Operating Keys START - Starts the drive when in local control, assuming the safety interlock is closed. STOP/RESET - Stops the drive when in local control. Resets faults except trip lock faults. Directional Keys +/- - Used to scroll through the parameters and to change parameter values. These keys are also used in the display mode to select a value for the display. Programming Keys CHANGE DATA - Used to change the data value of a parameter when programming the drive. Allows toggling between Hand and Auto modes. When in Hand mode, speed reference can be changed by pressing the "+" and "-" keys. QUICK MENU - Provides easy access to eleven commonly used parameters. Normally these parameters are all that is required for start-up. Either the eleven default parameters may be viewed, or a custom selection of eleven parameters may be selected for access via Quick Menu. Access to all of the parameters is obtained by pressing the QUICK MENU and "+" keys simultaneously. Programmable Analog and Digital Inputs and Outputs Two analog (1 voltage, 1 current) and five digital inputs and one analog and one relay (Form C 240 VAC 2 A) output, all programmable, are standard on the VLT 2800 drive. 5 September 2004
DRIVE FEATURES - MOTOR AND DRIVE INTERACTION Constant Torque Start The VLT 2800 drive allows a constant-torque start mode to provide full torque to accelerate different loads until the drive reaches the set point. Breakaway current can be set up to 180% for up to 0.5 seconds for breakaway of high friction loads Current limit circuit Adjustable from 0 to 160% of the VLT 2800 drive's rated current. If during acceleration, the current required to accelerate the load exceeds the current limit, the VLT 2800 drive will stop accelerating until the motor current is reduced to normal levels, at which time the load will continue to accelerate at the rate set by the acceleration time. Output Protection The VLT 2800 drive's sophisticated software senses output phase loss and output short circuits. Output contactors may be repeatedly used with no damage to the drive. Motor Thermistor A motor thermistor connection to the drive allows the drive to give a warning or shutdown in the event the motor reaches the thermistor set point. DRIVE FEATURES DC Line Reactor DC line reactors are standard on both the positive and negative rails on all 380/460 volt models, and the 3 and 5 HP 208/230 models. These filters reduce the level of harmonics reflected back into the building's power system without causing a voltage loss at the drive's input and reducing efficiency as an external AC line reactor would. These reactors also improve input power factor. In performance, the DC line reactor is equivalent to a 3% AC line reactor. Power Line Protection Power line voltage surge protection is provided by means of input Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs). This protects the diodes in the VLT 2800 drive's 3-phase full wave diode bridge. The DC line reactors also act to slow input power surges. Acceleration / Deceleration Rates The VLT 2800 drive can provide two individually controlled sets of acceleration/deceleration rates each from.02 to 3600 seconds. The shape of these curves may be automatically contoured to prevent tripping. Analog Inputs The VLT 2800 drive has two analog inputs as standard (one 0-10 VDC, one 0-20 ma). Both analog inputs are fully scalable. A built-in PID controller allows the drive to perform the functions of a set point controller. Analog Outputs One output is supplied which is capable of providing 0 to 20 ma or 4 to 20 ma analog output, or 0 to 10 V when used with a pull-down resistor. The output can be proportional to external reference, feedback, output frequency, output current, output power, or heatsink temperature. Auto Restarts The VLT 2800 drive can be automatically restarted up to 10 times at 0 to 10 second intervals. If the application causes the drive to trip more than the number of trials set, the drive will stop operating and display the fault on the display screen. A manual reset will be required by means of the reset key, a digital input, or EIA-485 command. In cases of severe trips, as a safety feature, the drive's input power may have to be cycled to restart a fault. Carrier Frequency By using IGBTs, the VLT 2800 drive can employ high switching frequencies. The motor current is practically sinusoidal. Audible motor noise can also be minimized by adjusting the frequency. The carrier frequency can be set between 3 and 14 khz. The drive will automatically reduce the carrier frequency as necessary to prevent drive overheating under conditions of high load and high ambient temperature. 6 September 2004
Input Power The VLT 2800 drive will provide a full rated output with an input voltage as low as 90% of the nominal. Automatic Motor Tuning (AMT) The drive automatically optimizes performance and efficiency measuring motor stator resistance. The motor does not have to be run or decoupled from the load for the AMT setup to be performed. (All models through 10 HP). Critical Frequency Lockouts For applications where it may be necessary to avoid specific frequencies due to mechanical resonance problems in the driven equipment, the VLT 2800 drive, with its Critical Frequency Lockout Function, makes it possible to set up to two different frequency ranges which will be avoided during operation of the drive. Each critical frequency setting can be as wide as necessary. If the reference signal defines that the VLT 2800 drive is to operate within this critical frequency range, the critical frequency lockout function will keep the drive operating below the critical frequency limit. When the frequency reference signal rises above the critical frequency maximum limit, the VLT 2800 drive will allow the motor to accelerate through the critical frequency at the time set by the acceleration rate. Preset Speeds The VLT 2800 drive allows for a maximum of four (one per setup) programmable preset speeds to be selected from the digital inputs. Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) Setpoint Controller The VLT 2800 drive is equipped with an internal PID controller. This controller can be used to control pumping, or ventilation applications. The drive uses two inputs. One set point signal indicates the desired value of a process variable and one feedback of the actual value of the process variable. This could be pressure, flow, temperature, CO 2 level, or anything that can be metered in the HVAC environment. Proportional: The proportional gain dictates the rate at which the deviation between actual and desired speed is corrected. The higher the gain, the faster the response, but too high a gain can cause hunting and a large overshoot. Integral: The integral time continually compares the feedback value with the desired set point over time to make sure the setpoint is reached. The greater the integral, the longer it takes to actually achieve the set point, but improves the system stability. Derivative: The derivative function monitors the rate at which the feedback is closing on the desired speed and slows the rate of approach to prevent overshooting. This function allows rapid, accurate, steady-state speed control. Built-in Communications The VLT 2800 drive is fully equipped for serial communication (EIA-485). Up to 31 drives can be connected to one serial bus up to 5,000 feet long. Communicates directly with Johnson Controls Metasys (N2) systems with no hardware changes or additional costs. Plenum Rated The VLT 2800 drive and all Danfoss Graham supplied options are recognized by UL for installation in air handling compartments. WARRANTY The VLT 2800 drive carries a standard 18-month on-site warranty from the date of shipment. This warranty includes parts, labor, travel, and expenses. EXTENDED WARRANTY If specified, the standard 18-month warranty can be extended to 24 or 36 months. START-UP If specified, a Danfoss Graham authorized service technician will perform a professional start-up service. 7 September 2004
