Using our Photoshelter Image Archive MedPhoto uses an online image archiving service called Photoshelter http://medphoto.photoshelter.com to display our image collection and to deliver images to our customers. Below, you ll find instructions on how to set up a free account, how to search for images and how to collect the images you choose into a Lightbox or favorites collection and share that Lightbox with others for feedback. Log in or set up a free account 1. First, navigate to http://medphoto.photoshelter.com. (Bookmark this page.) You ll find a home page that looks similar to the one at right (Fig. 1). 2. Click on My Account. 3. If you are here for the first time, set up an account by clicking Sign up for a free account. Provide your email address and create a password. (Fig. 2) If you are using FAHC email, use the first.last@vtmednet.org format. If you are using a UVM email account, use username@uvm.edu. I use rchawla@uvm.edu for instance. is is very important as you will be sharing photographs with others and you ll need to know which email address to send invitations to. DO NOT USE ACCOUNTS SUCH AS GMAIL OR YAHOO. You will receive a confirmation email. Follow the instructions in that email. Return to http://medphoto.photoshelter.com and click on My Account to sign in. Fig. 1 Fig. 2 4. Once you log in, you will be presented with a screen that looks like Fig. 3. You will see invitations to Galleries as well as Lightboxes that you ve created or been invited to. Continue to page 2 to learn how to search for photographs. Fig. 3 1

Using our Photoshelter Image Archive Searching for photographs 1. Click Search in the page header. 2. You will be presented with the page below. You can search by name or keyword. A list of the keywords used by MedPhoto is attached to these instructions. 3. Pay close attention to the tips on the right of the search page. 4. A search for Pathology & Group results in all of the group photographs of the Pathology Department in our archive. 2

Searching for photographs 5. Hover over a thumbnail to see a medium-size preview or click on a thumbnail to see a large version with caption information as seen below. Note that you can refine your search by selecting relevant keywords shown beneath the photo and clicking Search. 6. You can save the photo into a lightbox to review at a later date by clicking the Add to Lightbox link when viewing the larger version of the image. More on lightbox use on the next page. 7. If you want to start your search over, click the Search link in the header area. You ve found the photo you want and added it to a lightbox. Now what? See page 4. 3

Lightboxes What is the lightbox? e lightbox allows you to store images that you're interested in in a personalized repository on PhotoShelter. You can leave a comment on an individual image, or on the entire lightbox, if you are researching images for a project or want to share the lightbox with your colleagues or the photographer, for example. You can share the lightbox with other users by providing e-mail addresses for those users. Lightboxes are a great way to collaborate with others when discussing a set of images. Where do I find my lightboxes? e lightbox link is located in the header near the top right of the page. Add an image to a lightbox. How do I add an image to a lightbox? If you are viewing images after having performed a search you will find a "Lightbox" button above the enlarged version of the image that will allow you to add that image to your lightbox. You will be prompted to select one of your own lightboxes, a shared lightbox, or a new lightbox in which to place the image. If you are not logged in, the image will be added to a temporary lightbox, which can only be saved once logged in. When you add an image to your lightbox, it is put into a "default" lightbox. You can create up to ten different lightboxes by either clicking the "Create New Lightbox" link, or clicking "My PhotoShelter -> My Lightboxes". 4

How do I view the contents of my lightbox? You may view your lightboxes by clicking the "Lightboxes" link you will find in the navigation area near the top of the page on the right. Once you access your lightboxes, you will find there are two tabs - one to display lightboxes that you've created, and one to display lightboxes that may have been shared with you by others. Can I share the lightbox with another person? Yes, while viewing a lightbox you can click the "Share" button to invite other users. Here you will be presented with two options: Select a Photographer/Image Owner: is method allows you to share the lightbox with a photographer (Medical Photography) without having to know their email address. Enter an E-mail address: Here you can enter in the email address for the invitee. You cannot share the contents of your lightbox without knowing the e-mail address of the user you wish to invite. In each case, please click the following check boxes in the invite: Allow Person to invite others Allow person to remove, rate, sort and comment on images Email me a copy of this invitation e person you have shared the lightbox with with receive an email invitation to view the lightbox. If they are new to Photoshelter, they will need to create a free account and will be asked to do so (see page 1). If they already have an account, they will need to login to view the lightbox. ey can now view the photographs you ve selected and if they choose, they can leave comments or rate the photographs via a star rating system (optional - See page 6). ey can also respond with their preferences via traditional means. We ve selected the photographs we want, how do we get them? Delete the photographs that you don t want from the lightbox and share the final selection with the COM Web Team at biverson@uvm.edu. You can logout by going to My Account and clicking Log Out. 5

e following instructions detail how to use the interactive ratings portion of the lightbox. is is a great way to communicate between members of a department but this method of using the lightbox is optional. More information is available by visiting http://www.photoshelter.com/help/index/buyer/lbx. Indicates that the lightbox owner has rated this photo 5 stars out of 5 Indicates that someone has left a comment on this specific photo Click this tab to leave a comment about the lightbox Indicates that this lightbox has been shared with one person Click this tab to see how the people with whom you ve shared the lightbox have rated each photograph (explanation next page.) 6

Leave a comment by clicking on the green bubble icon above a photo. e comment appears below the photo along with the name of the person who left the comment. You can see how you rated the image as well as how others have rated it. You can see how you rated the image as well as how others have rated it by toggling the Ratings Matrix tab. 7
