HHV BoardLink and Computer Link Adapter for the Mayer-Johnson Hand Held Voice Installation & User s Guide Ability Research, Inc.

Introduction to the HHV BoardLink The HHV BoardLink software and Computer Link Adapter are used to back up and restore sets of communication boards in the Hand Held Voice. With HHV BoardLink you can: Back up board sets programmed into the Hand Held Voice base unit or expansion cards. Save the back-ups as files on the computer s hard drive and later restore them to the Hand Held Voice. Transfer board sets between expansion cards, base unit and card, etc. Share your board sets with others by sending the saved files on diskette or via email. NOTE: The present version of HHV BoardLink does NOT save, restore, or preserve the recorded messages associated with boards. You will need to manually rerecord them. Important Safety Information Read and follow these instructions and the instructions for your Hand Held Voice and your computer. Keep these instructions. Use the HHV BoardLink only as instructed and only with the Hand Held Voice. Do NOT attempt to use cables other than the Computer Link Adapter. NEVER use the Computer Link Adapter in or near water. A serious or deadly electric shock could result.

HHV BoardLink Software Installation System Requirements PC with a 486/66 MHz or higher processor. Pentium recommended. Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98 operating system. 16 MB of RAM (32 MB recommended for Win 98). 9-pin serial (COM) port. 4 MB of hard disk space. VGA or higher resolution monitor (Super VGA recommended). Microsoft Mouse or compatible. 1.44 MB 3.5 floppy disk (or CD-ROM drive for CD version). Installation Diskette: 1. Place the first HHV BoardLink Installation diskette in the floppy drive. 2. From the Start menu select Run. 3. Type a:setup.exe and click OK. This will start the installer. Follow the instructions provided onscreen. CD: 1. Place the HHV BoardLink CD in your CD-ROM drive. If the installation program starts automatically, follow its instructions. If not, proceed with step 2 below. 2. From the Start menu select Run. 3.Type d:setup.exe and click OK. (Some computers use a different letter for the CD-ROM drive. Use the appropriate letter.) This will start the installer. Follow the instructions provided onscreen.

Connecting the Computer Link Adapter Hardware Requirements HHV Computer Link Adapter cable. PC computer with a 9-pin serial (Com) port available. Hand Held Voice version 2.68-C or later. HHV BoardLink software installed. NOTE: The audio cable provided with the Computer Link Adapter is NOT REQUIRED with the current version of HHV BoardLink software. Please keep it for use with future updates.

Hardware Connection Be sure to refer to the blue label on the Computer Link Adapter when making connections between the computer and the Hand Held Voice. Connect the larger 9-pin connector of the Computer Link Adapter to the 9-pin serial (COM) port connector on the back of your computer. Make a note of the particular COM port you used (if you have more than one). You will need to tell the software which port you are using. Connect the smaller round 8-pin connector to the round connector on the left side of the Hand Held Voice. Do NOT force the connector.

Software Connection Once you have the Computer Link cable properly connected to your computer and the HHV, you are ready to establish the software connection between the two. Turn on the Hand Held Voice. The display should be visible. NOTE: It is recommended that you set the sleep time on the HHV to never go to sleep. Start the HHV BoardLink software by going to Start> Programs>HHV BoardLink and click on HHV BoardLink. The main screen of the HHV BoardLink software should appear. In the Port box on the screen select the correct COM port (the one you plugged the Computer Link Adapter into). Click on the Connect to HHV button to establish communication with the HHV hardware. When the connection has been established, the Status display will read Information Refreshed from Base Unit.

Backing Up and Restoring Boards These are basic usage instructions. For more detailed instructions, please refer to the online help within the HHV BoardLink Software. Backing up HHV Boards 1. Select the source of the boards you want to back up; Base Unit or Expansion Card. 2. Click on Get Boards From Base Unit. The status display will report the progress of the backup. 3. Click on Save Board Set To File to name and save your board set. Note: Only the boards, links, and graphics are saved. At this time the recordings can t be saved. Restoring Boards to the HHV 1. Click on Open Board Set From File and select a saved board set to restore. 2. Select where on the HHV you want the boards to go; Base Unit or Expansion Card. 3. Click on Send Boards To Base Unit. The status display will report the progress of the restoration. Remember, you will now need to rerecord your messages on the HHV.
