A History of Innovation 1919 F.D. Edwards begins importing vacuum equipment, establishes Edwards equipment and services business based in south London. 1939 F.D. Edwards begins manufacturing vacuum equipment. 1953 Edwards moves to new head office and factory in Crawley, Sussex, UK. 1954 Edwards High Vacuum Limited ( Edwards ) formed. 1968 Edwards acquired by BOC Group. 1971 Nissan Edwards Shinku joint venture established in Japan. 1984 Edwards patents the Drystar dry (oil-free) vacuum pump. 1988 Distribution agreement created with Seiko Seiki Ltd., a Japanese manufacturer of magnetically suspended turbomolecular pumps. 1992 Acquisition of Plasma Products from Electrotech Ltd., a start-up company focused on exhaust gas management and scrubbing systems. 1992 Songwon Edwards established as a joint venture in South Korea. 1997 BOC Edwards formed with the integration of Edwards vacuum business with BOC electronic gases business to serve the semiconductor industry. 2001 Acquisition of the vacuum and pressure business from Smiths Group, which includes Stokes Vacuum, Hick Hargreaves and Hibon. 2001 Acquisition of the turbomolecular pump business from Seiko Instruments Inc. 2002 Acquisition of Hydromatix, a liquid abatement business. 2003 Zenith compound pump/abatement system launched. 2004 Operations in Japan move to new purpose built complex in Yachiyo-city, Chiba (near Tokyo). 2005 New manufacturing plant opens in Chunan, Korea, to serve the semiconductor and flat panel industries in Asia. 2006 The BOC Group is acquired by Linde AG. 2007 Edwards acquired by CCMP Capital & Unitas Capital and becomes independent. 2008 ixh 4th generation dry vacuum pump launched for semiconductor applications. 2009 next turbomolecular pump range launched for the scientific instrument market. 2010 GXS industrial dry screw pump range launched offering intelligent pumping for many industrial applications.
