BLUETOOTH LOW ENERGY: THE DEVELOPER'S The First Complete Guide to Bluetooth Low Energy: How It Works, What It Can Do, and How to Apply It A radical departure from conventional Bluetooth technology, Bluetooth low energy (BLE) enables breakthrough wireless applications in industries ranging from healthcare to transportation. Running on a coin-sized battery, BLE can operate reliably for years, connecting and extending everything from personal area network devices to next-generation sensors. Now, one of the standard s leading developers has written the first comprehensive, accessible introduction to BLE for every system developer, designer, and engineer. Robin Heydon, a member of the Bluetooth SIG Hall of Fame, has brought together essential information previously scattered through multiple standards documents, sharing the context and expert insights needed to implement high-performance working systems. He first reviews BLE s design goals, explaining how they drove key architectural decisions, and introduces BLE s innovative usage models. Next, he thoroughly covers how the two main parts of BLE, the controller and host, work together, and then addresses key issues from security and profiles through testing and qualification. This knowledge has enabled the creation of Bluetooth Smart and Bluetooth Smart Ready devices. This guide is an indispensable companion to the official BLE standards documents and is for every technical professional and decision-maker considering BLE, planning BLE products, or transforming plans into working systems. Topics Include BLE device types, design goals, terminology, and core concepts Architecture: controller, host, applications, and stack splits Usage models: presence detection, data broadcasting, connectionless models, and gateways Physical Layer: modulation, frequency band, radio channels, power, tolerance, and range Direct Test Mode: transceiver testing, hardware interfaces, and HCI Link Layer: state machine, packets, channels, broadcasting, encryption, and optimization HCI: physical/logical interfaces, controller setup, and connection management L2CAP: channels and packet structure, and LE signaling channels Attributes: grouping, services, characteristics, and protocols Security: pairing, bonding, and data signing Generic Access Profiles: roles, modes, procedures, security modes, data advertising, and services Applications, devices, services, profiles, and peripherals Testing/qualification: starting projects, selecting features, planning, testing, compliance, and more Sales Rank: #296820 in ebooks Published on: 2012-10-26 Released on: 2012-10-26

Most helpful customer reviews 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Excellent, just get it By GerryO For most fast-moving technology, the latest facts will not be in a printed book. On the other hand, the "grazing method" of learning new tech from the web often overlooks important first principles that end up biting you as a developer. The author has struck an excellent balance between explaining "what" and "why". Perhaps even more significantly, he interjects suggestions that are very, very helpful for an implementationfocused reader. BTLE is very different from classic BT from an implementer's perspective and this book is a superb way to jump-start yourself. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. The best available BTLE resource By Garth Snyder This book really stands in a class by itself. If you're implementing a BTLE device or even just trying to understand a cell phone's BTLE API, this is the book to get. I particularly appreciate the extensive discussions of why certain aspects of the system have ended up the way they are. In many cases, there are power-efficiency motivations that make perfect sense once you understand their implications. If you don't know about these design motivations (i.e., you don't read this book), those aspects of BTLE will just seem weird. Other aspects of BTLE are inherited from previous versions of Bluetooth, so their oddity at least has some context. There again, it's good to know why. That said, this book isn't perfect. At heart, BTLE is relatively SIMPLE. Unfortunately, the standard and the wretched terminology it uses do everything possible to obscure this fact. While this book does help to shed some light on the overall organization of the standard, it doesn't stray too far from the standard's conceptual model. That's good in that you'll end up well prepared to read the standard itself and all the other writings about BTLE. But it's also a bit disappointing in that once you break through to the other side of confusion, you'll realize that the journey probably didn't have to be so arduous. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. It's not much help. Save your money. By Technologist So you're implementing a BS (BLE) design on a product, you've selected an MCU chip such as nrf51, you're a developer and you want "The Developers Guide", what K&R was to C, you are looking for the equivalent for BLE (or BS as it's honestly now been renamed). Well this book isn't it. I can't understand the many high ratings.
With this book you won't see the woods for the trees. A collection of spurious and poorly organized definitions, concepts and content, much of it redundant, useless or out of place, and you'll be 130 to 230 pages into it without finding out anything helpful. A guide it is not. It's a collection of subheadings and sections, poorly thought out and seemingly mostly existing just to fill in space to pad out the book. You'll find much better guides on Wikipedia and the official BLE site. See all 35 customer reviews...
