Cisco Nexus 9396 Thermal Duct and Cabling Guide Thermal Duct Installation APPLICATION GUIDE Top of Rack (ToR) switches, such as the Cisco Nexus 9396, are designed to meet the server-access networking requirements of the virtualized data center. When deployed within server cabinets or racks, the modular duct provides a cool air path to the air intakes of the switch. By providing a path for cool air to the switch, data center temperature set points can be raised resulting in higher energy efficiencies and lower operating costs. Key Features and Benefits: Directing cool air to the switch increases energy efficiency in ToR applications and allows high density server applications Passive inlet duct, requires no additional moving parts or power required Day one or two installation eliminates the requirement to replace or disturb existing cabinets, equipment and infrastructure for lower capital expenditures and minimized risk Compatible with Panduit Server (S-Type) Cabinets which allows maximum thermal efficiency Allows access to power supplies and fan blades for ease of maintenance Support bracket supports switch during installation which allows a single person to install the switch duct 1. Install the Cisco Nexus 9396 in the desired RU.
Thermal Duct Installation 2. Install the thermal duct in the same RU within the cabinet as the 9398 switch. Make sure the thermal duct is secure and level, and fits tightly with the 9396 switch. 2
Thermal Duct Installation (continued) 3. Once switch is installed push the slide at the top of the thermal duct to the fan side of the switch. There are two wing nuts on the inside of the thermal duct that lock the slide into place against the fan side of the switch. Push Slide 4. Once the thermal duct is installed and the slide is secured, position the faceplate on the front of the thermal duct. It is secured with four screws. 3
LC Duplex Cables Cable Installation Once the switch and servers are installed in the cabinet, you are ready to install the cables on the back side of the cabinet. 4
LC Duplex Cable Installation 5. Install the LC duplex cable into the transceiver within the server. 6. Run the LC duplex cable through the cable management fingers on the side of the cabinet. 5
LC Duplex Cable Installation (continued) 7. Direct the LC duplex cable through the horizontal cable manager above the switch. 8. Connect the LC duplex cable into the transceiver in the Cisco Nexus 9396 switch. 6
LC Duplex Cable Installation (continued) 9. Once all the LC duplex cables are installed, dress the cables using Panduit Tak-Ty Hook and Loop Products. Start by attaching each cable to the cable management finger. 10. Once each cable is attached to the cable management finger, dress the hanging cables. Remember to maintain the correct bend radius when dressing the cables. Want to read more Application Notes and watch Application Note Videos?
