Quick Reference Guide Updating Anti-Virus to Microsoft Security Essentials These instructions will guide you through the process of removing McAfee and installing Microsoft Security Essentials on your PC or laptop at home. If you experience any issues or have any questions about this process, contact the IT Help Desk at x7777. Check for McAfee EPO Agent If you have a work laptop provided to you by Information Technology, follow the steps below to check to see if the McAfee EPO Agent is installed. If you have a personal laptop, you may skip to page 7. Step 1: At the bottom right hand corner of your desktop near the computer clock, locate the McAfee icon ( ). Right-click on the McAfee icon. Step 2: If you see epolicy Orchestrator Agent listed, then please follow the next set of instructions to remove it. If you do not see epolicy Orchestrator Agent listed, skip to page 7. Remove McAfee EPO Agent If epolicy Orchestrator Agent (EPO Agent) is installed, it must be manually removed before uninstalling McAfee AntiVirus. Step 1: Click the Start button at the bottom left of your desktop. Select Run. Step 2: Type cmd in the Open field. Click OK. Last Revised: 06/24/11 Page 2 of 16
Step 3: You will see the string: C:\Documents and Settings\your username> Type cd \ and then press the Enter key. Step 4: You will see the string: C:\> Type cd Program Files and then press the Enter key. Step 5: You will see the string: C:\Program Files> Type cd McAfee and then press the Enter key. Step 6: You will see the string: C:\Program Files\McAfee> Type cd Common Framework and then press the Enter key. Step 6a: If you receive an error message saying: The system cannot find the path specified, follow the next set of instructions. If you do not receive this error message, proceed to step 7. Step 6b: Close the cmd.exe window and reopen it by going to Start > Run. Type cd \ and press Enter. Type cd Program Files and press Enter. Type cd Network Associates and press Enter. Step 6c: You will see the string: C:\Program Files\Network Associates> Type cd Common Framework and then press the Enter key. Step 6d: You will see the string: C:\Program Files\Network Associates\Common Framework> Type frminst /remove=agent and then press the Enter key. Proceed to step 8. Step 8: The McAfee Agent and Updater Setup window will open. It may take several minutes for the process to run. Step 9: Once the EPO Agent has been successfully uninstalled, you will receive a notification. Click OK. You may now close the CMD window. Last Revised: 06/24/11 Page 6 of 16
Remove McAfee VirusScan Use your computer s control panel to uninstall McAfee. Step 1: Click the Start button/icon at the bottom left of your desktop. Select Control Panel. Last Revised: 06/24/11 Page 7 of 16
Step 2: Select the option to uninstall programs. If you are running Windows XP, select Add/Remove Programs. If you are running Windows Vista, select Programs and Features. Step 3: Locate McAfee VirusScan Enterprise in the program list and click on it. Then select Remove (Windows XP) or Uninstall (Windows Vista). Last Revised: 06/24/11 Page 8 of 16
Step 4: If you receive a message asking if you are sure you want to remove McAfee, click Yes. Step 5: It may take several minutes for McAfee to be uninstalled. Step 6: Be sure to uninstall any other McAfee programs by clicking on them and then selecting either Remove or Uninstall. Last Revised: 06/24/11 Page 9 of 16
Step 6a: When uninstalling McAfee Agent, you may receive this message indicating that your computer will need to be restarted. Click OK. Step 7: Once all of the McAfee components are uninstalled, restart your computer. Install Microsoft Security Essentials Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials on your computer or laptop. Step 1: Open your internet browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.) to http://www.microsoft.com/enus/security_essentials/default.aspx. Last Revised: 06/24/11 Page 10 of 16
Step 2: Click on the Download it free today graphic located on the main page. Step 3: Select the language for your download on the left. Then select your operating system on the right to begin the download. Windows 7 and Windows Vista should detect the operating system for you and you will just click Download on the popup. Step 4: If prompted to either run or save the file, click Run. Step 5: It may take several minutes to download the installation wizard. Last Revised: 06/24/11 Page 12 of 16
Step 5a: If the system asks you if you want to run this software, click Run. Step 6: The Microsoft Security Essentials Installation Wizard will start up. Click Next. Last Revised: 06/24/11 Page 13 of 16
Step 7: Review the license agreement. Then click I accept. Step 8: Select whether you wish to participate in the Customer Experience Improvement Program. Then click Next. Last Revised: 06/24/11 Page 14 of 16
Step 9: It is highly recommended that you leave the option If no firewall is turned on, turn on Windows Firewall selected. Only uncheck this option if you have another firewall installed. Then click Next. Step 10: On this screen is a reminder that you should uninstall any other antivirus programs (i.e. McAfee) on your computer before installing Microsoft Security Essentials. Click Install if you have already removed McAfee. Click Cancel if you still need to remove McAfee. Last Revised: 06/24/11 Page 15 of 16
Step 11: It may take several minutes for Microsoft Security Essentials to be installed. Step 12: Once the installation is finished, you may be asked to restart your computer. If so, click Restart Now. If not, click Finish. Microsoft Security Essentials will start up, update its anti-virus definitions to the latest version, and begin scanning your machine.
