1. Presentation basics: A Visual Aid Slides are simply another visual aid to support your presentation just as a flip chart is! Right What is the presentation? YOU are the presentation. The entire learning environment you create. Not the PowerPoint. The PowerPoint is merely a visual aid Wrong The presenter should be more important than the slides. Page 2 of 15
Less is More Less words = more student learning If there are too many words on a slide the audience often will tune you out to read the slide. It is also very difficult for your audience to pick out the key points with all the extra text. I used the Send to Microsoft Word technique to create this handout. If extra information is absolutely essential, consider using the Notes feature of PowerPoint. Use the Send to Microsoft Word command to create a handout that includes both the slides and notes. 2. Creating your title slide This is My Title Slide And here is my Subtitle Click to add your title text where it says Click to add title: Do the same for your subtitle The first slide in a blank PowerPoint files is the title slide. The title slide has its own special formatting and features. Use as the first slide in a presentation, and also (if desired) to announce new chapters or new major topics. Page 3 of 15

Adding new slides Adding New Slides or Click the New Slide button that may be available from the right side of the toolbar, or Choose Insert -> New Slide from the menu bar, or Use the Ctrl+M keyboard shortcut (hold down the Control key and tap the letter M key). 4. Adding bulleted text Adding bulleted text Click, type, press Enter key Use Tab and Shift+Tab to indent Tab key indents For subpoint, press the Tab key This is a subpoint Shift+Tab - outdents To return to main bullet, hold down the Shift key while pressing the Tab key Page 4 of 15
5. Changing slide layouts Click various layouts to explore If the Slide Layout window is not visible, choose Format -> Slide Layout from the menu toolbar Click various layouts to view in more detail. 6. Inserting clip art and images Inserting Clip Art Choose Insert -> Picture -> Clip Art The Clip Art search will open in the right-hand pane Type a Search for: word in the clip art panel Searching for clipart Type in a word in the Search for box and click the GO button I typed in the word coffee to search for clip art with that theme Click GO Scroll down to view, click the image to insert Page 5 of 15
Always consider Does it add or detract from your message? Inserting My Own Image Choose Insert -> Picture -> From File To insert images from digital cameras, scanned images, saved from the Internet, etc. Manipulating Images The appearance of the mouse pointer will change depending upon where you are pointing Move arrow Click and drag with the four-arrowheaded move arrow to reposition the image Click and drag a corner with the two-arrow-headed arrow to resize the image Resize arrow Page 6 of 15

Slide designs, colors and backgrounds Slide Designs Select Format -> Slide Design Slide Designs 2 Click the template on the right side to view it in the main window The last design viewed is applied to your PowerPoint slides. Go switch back to no design formatting, scroll up (if necessary) and click the default design. This is the first icon under Available for Use Practice choosing slide designs Page 9 of 15
Color Background color: Choose Format -> Background Select More Colors (for more choices) Think about the impact of color Some audiences prefer light text on dark background Some say light text on a dark background is less jarring on the eyes Some people cannot discern some colors (10% males?)
