Configuring the EminentWare Wake On Lan Feature EminentWare s Wake On Lan (WOL) feature allows you to remotely power on machines that are in your local network. The WOL functionality is offered via an EminentWare Configuration Management task and can thus be scheduled and configured to export and email results. The WOL feature is particularly useful when used in conjunction with other Configuration Management tasks such as Update Management and Shutdown or Reboot Computers. For instance, using these three tasks together, and organization could wake numerous computers during off hours, apply updates to them, and then shut them down. In order to configure the WOL feature, you need to perform the following steps: Step 1: You will first need to ensure that UDP broadcasts from the EminentWare server can reach the managed computers that will be the target of the WOL task. By default, many network devices such as routers do not forward UDP broadcasts across subnet boundaries. In such cases, one of the two following options will have to be implemented: 1) Configure your network hardware to forward UDP broadcasts from the EminentWare server to all subnets that have managed computers that will be the target of the WOL task. 2) Deploy an additional EminentWare server in each subnet that has managed computers that will be targeted for WOL. These servers can be provisioned to the Automation Server role or to a Management or Application Server role, although additional configuration such as Routing Rules (which is beyond the scope of this document) may be required. Step 2: You will need to ensure that the managed computers that will be targeted by the WOL task have a network card that supports WOL and that WOL support is enabled (traditionally enabled in the BIOS). Step 3: You will need to configure, schedule, and successfully execute an EminentWare Discovery task over all of the subnets containing managed computers that will be targeted by the WOL task. The WOL task requires a MAC address and Discovery is how the EminentWare server resolves and stores MAC addresses. (See the EminentWare Quick Start Guide for guidance on building and running Discovery tasks.) You can run the Retrieved MAC Addresses report in the Discovery Report Category to verify that the Discovery task was able to retrieve the MAC address of the machine(s) you want to wake up. Step 4: Create, configure, and execute a WOL task. This can be done in various places within the EminentWare console by selecting the Wake On Lan Configuration Management task from the Actions menu on the right side of the console. The Wake On Lan Options dialog will appear:
As the dialog instructs, you will need to enter the Broadcast Address for the subnet containing the managed computers you wish to wake up. You can broadcast to all subnets using the 255.255.255.255 address or direct the broadcast to a particular subnet. For example, if you want to wake machines in the 192.168.1.X class C subnet, you would enter a broadcast address of 192.168.1.255. You will also need to enter the UDP port for the WOL request (UDP port 9 by default), and the Secure On Password (if you have configured your managed computers to require one).
Clicking Wake Up will launch the Task Options Wizard which will first prompt you to select the managed computers you want to wake up: Clicking Next will launch the scheduling dialog. You can specify how and when this task will run.
Clicking Next takes you to the Export and Notification Options page. (See the Quick Start Guide for more information on configuring email.) Finally, clicking Next will present the task summary.
If you have met all of the prerequisites, the WOL task will run at the specified time and wake the machines you have selected. For more information on this topic, consult the EminentWare Quick Start Guide, the product help, or EminentWare Customer Support.
