What is FTP? Short for File Transfer Protocol, the protocol for exchanging files over the Internet. FTP is most commonly used to download a file from a server using the Internet or to upload a file to a server (e.g., uploading a Web page file to a server). 2
Installing FileZilla Step 1: Insert the Installation CD and click on the Install FileZilla button. Step 2: The installer screen will display, click on the 'I Agree' button. Step 3: The installer will now ask which users you would like to have access to FileZilla, by default this will install for all users, click the 'Next' button 3
Step 4: The installer will now ask which components you wish to install, this does not need to be changed, however, if you would like an icon on the desktop you will need to click on the checkbox next to 'Desktop Icon', otherwise just click 'Next' Step 5: The installer will now ask where you wish to install FileZilla, this does not need to be changed. Click 'Next' 4
Step 6: The installer will now ask for a Start Menu Folder, this does not need to be changed. Click 'Install' FileZilla is now installed, click 'Finish' to close the installer. 5
Opening FileZilla If you chose to add a Desktop Icon when installing FileZilla then simply click on the FileZilla desktop icon to launch FileZilla. If you did not choose to install a desktop icon then you will need to follow these steps: Step 1: Click on the Windows Start button at the bottom left of your screen, or alternatively press the Windows button on your keyboard. Step 2: If you are running Windows XP or or later Operating System (OS) then click on 'All Programs' If you are running an Operating System prior to Windows XP then click on 'Programs' Step 3: Click on 'FileZilla FTP Client' Step 4: Click on 'FileZilla' to open FileZilla. 6
FileZilla Setup Note: When installing, the below settings should have automatically been set up for you. You can check this by opening FileZilla then click on the down arrow next to the icon at the top left of the FileZilla application, you should now see the words 'My Website': If not then please proceed to to the next step, if 'My Website' is there then you can skip these instructions and proceed to 'Downloading Your Website' (page 10). Step 1: Open FileZilla, once opened, click the File menu, then click Site Manager. Step 2: The Site Manager screen will display any existing connections you have set up. Click the New Site button. 7
Step 3: Enter 'My Website' as the name for your New Site. Step 4: In the Host text box, enter ftp.yourdomain.co.uk. (yourdomain.co.uk being the website that has been registered for you) 8
Step 5: Use the Servertype drown-down list to select FTP. Step 6: Select the Normal radio button, under Logontype. Step 7: In the User text box, enter the FTP account username that has been provided to you. Step 8: Enter the FTP account password in the password text box. Step 9: Click the Advanced tab. Step 10: Enter c:\website-files in the 'Default local directory' text box. Whenever FileZilla connects to your FTP space, it will show this folder's contents in the Local Site section of the screen. Step 11: Enter "/htdocs" in the Default remote directory text box. This will ensure that FileZilla connects to your live website files folder. Step 12: Click 'OK' 9
Downloading Your Website Step 1: Open FileZilla, click the down arrow on the top left icon. Step 2: If you are downloading your website for the first time: Select all the files in the 'Remote Site:' window (Right pane) by clicking on one of the files or folders and then pressing CTRL+A to select all. 10
Right click on any of the selected files and click on 'Download' If you wish to download a single file: Select the file in the 'Remote Site:' window (Right pane) by clicking on it. Right click on the selected file and click on 'Download' 11
The files will now be downloaded to your computer. 12
Uploading Your Website Step 1: Open FileZilla, click the down arrow on the top left icon. Step 2: If wish to upload the whole website: Select all the files in the 'website-files' folder by clicking on one of the files or folders and then pressing CTRL+A to select all. 13
Right click on any of the selected files and click on 'Upload' If you wish to upload files one at a time: Select the file in the 'website-files' folder by clicking on it. Right click on the selected file and click on 'Upload' 14
The files will now be uploaded to your website. Once you have uploaded your files please visit your website. Once you have entered your domain into your browser and you are looking at your website press CTRL + F5 to refresh the page. If your site is still not showing the changes it may be worth clearing your temporary internet files from your computer. In Internet Explorer (6 & 7): 1, Click on the Tools menu, click Internet Options. The Internet Options box should open to the General tab. 2, On the General tab, in the Temporary Internet Files section, click the Delete Files button. This will delete all the files that are currently stored in your cache. In Internet Explorer 8: 1, Click on the Safety menu, click Delete Browsing History. 2, Click on the Delete button, this will delete all the files that are currently stored in your cache. In Firefox: 1, Click on the Tools menu, click Clear Private Data. 2, Click on the Clear Private Data Now button, this will delete all the files that are currently stored in your cache. Other browsers than the above will also have a similar feature. 15
