Installation Installation Step 1: Install Host Remote The host Remote RMX-3200, Remote RMM-1400, Remote RMM-800, or Remote RMC- 700 needs to be installed prior to installation of the RMB-3. Follow the installation steps specified in the Installation Guide for the appropriate Remote model and/or the Westell Remote Installation Video series. Refer to Product Documentation to access installation guides and videos. (Optional) Step 2: Install Surge Protection Module Ground Bar Use of surge protection modules on RMB-3 is a recommended option. If surge protection modules are to be used, their underlying ground bar (Westell part # RMB- 3GB) needs to be installed first. This task is easier before the RMB-3 is mounted in a rack, particularly if other equipment is mounted. The ground bar s flat side fits against the rear of the recess on the left side of the RMB-3 cabinet. The protrusion with the ground lug connections seats on the lower left end of the recess. Secure the ground bar to the case with four T10 (star) screws through openings in the long side and one T10 screw between the two ground lug connections. Step 3: Attach Chassis Ground Wire Notes: For ground connections, use 14AWG or larger conductor. Apply an appropriate antioxidant to the bare conductors before crimping the connector to the connector mating surface. Attach the chassis ground wire of appropriate length to the chassis ground stud protruding inward from the left side of the RMB-3 cabinet using the ring terminal and 5/16 Keps nut. Orient the ring terminal pointing out from the cabinet as shown on the left side of Figure 1 and Figure 2. Tip: Tighten the chassis ground connection with a nut driver before installing any Surge Protection Modules. (Optional) Step 4: Install Surge Protection Modules One to four Surge Protection Modules can be installed on the four seats above dry contact connections 1-16 (see Front Panel Components, left side and Figure 1) using these steps: Line up the four male dry contact cable entry plugs on the lower rear of the module with the corresponding female dry contact inputs. At the same time, line up the two openings in the top rear of the module with the pair of studs protruding from the ground bar. Page 12

Installation Tip: Place the RMB-3 on its back side, face up, on a firm flat surface so the modules can be installed by pushing them straight down onto the RMB-3. Gently slide the module together with the RMB-3 until it is fully seated against the cabinet and ground bar. The dry contact connectors must be fully engaged and the ground bar studs must slide into the upper openings. Secure the module against the ground bar with two 1/4 #2 Phillips screws in the ground bar studs through the upper openings. Attach two-position cable entry plugs in the dry contact inputs on the front of the module. Stick the appropriate label (Westell part # 565-500958) to each module above the cable inputs to identify the dry contacts by the correct numbers. Insert 5-pin Gas Discharge Tube Protectors into position above each dry contact which will be in use. Note: Protection modules add approximately 1.1 inches (2.95 cm) to the depth of the RMB-3. Step 5: Mount RMB-3 The RMB-3 is designed for installation in a 19-inch or 23-inch equipment rack using mounting flanges which attach to each side of the device. For 19-inch racks, orient the flanges with the long side against the RMB-3 as shown in Figure 2. The flanges can be shifted forward or backward and/or flipped to mount the RMB-3 flush with the rack front, forward, or recessed. Attach each flange securely with three screws and lock washers. For 23-inch racks, orient the flanges with the short side against the RMB-3. Follow the same steps as above. Mount the RMB-3 in the desired rack location with four screws. Figure 2 RMB-3 with mounting flanges oriented for flush mount in 19-inch rack Step 6: Connect Grounds Notes: For ground connections, use 14AWG or larger conductor. Apply an appropriate antioxidant to the bare conductors before crimping the connector to the connector mating surface. Page 13

Installation Connect the Chassis Ground using the ring terminal provided (see Front Panel Components, left side, and/or Figure 1). Connect the Ground Bar ground using the two-hole copper compression lug provided. Make both connections to a suitable ground such as the frame ground of a rack system or a reliable earth ground. CAUTION: The chassis ground must be connected to the same earthing electrode conductor as the DC supply system or to a bonding jumper (from an earthing terminal or bus) connected to the earthing electrode of the DC supply system. The chassis must be located in the same immediate area (such as adjacent cabinets) as other equipment connected to the same DC power system and earthing electrode conductor. The DC system cannot be earthed elsewhere. The DC power source must be located in the same premises as the chassis. No switching or disconnecting devices can occur between the earthed conductor of the DC source and the earthing electrode conductor. Step 7: Connect Remote to RMB-3 Use a standard CAT5 Ethernet cable (such as Westell part number CAB182-10) to connect a Westell Remote Ethernet port to the Ethernet port on RMB-3. Green LEDs on each Ethernet port show connection status. See Pinouts on page 4. Once the RMB-3 connection to the Remote is successful, the RMB-3 can be put into service as described in chapter Configuring the Peripheral Management Subsystem in your Remote model Configuration Guide. Step 8: Connect other RMB-3 Inputs and Outputs RMB-3 dry-contact connections, analog current and analog voltage connections, and relay connections all use cable entry terminals that plug into the front of the RMB-3 or its seated Protection Modules. All removable connectors support 16 to 20 gauge wire, stranded or solid. Westell recommends stranded conductor wiring for all inputs and outputs for reliability of connections which may be removed on occasion. Wires are inserted in the appropriate input and secured by tightening the corresponding screw on top of the plug. It may be easiest to unplug the terminal to insert and secure the wires. The installer can, as needed, gently pry a terminal out of its input using a small flathead screwdriver. Once the wires are secured, plug the terminal back into the correct input, and test the connection by gently tugging on each wire. Page 14

Installation CAUTION: Please contact Westell (Telephone Technical Support or Email Technical Support) prior to connecting any external wetting voltage source to the RMB-3. Make sure a functional 5-Pin Gas Discharge Tube Protector is installed above each drycontact input in use in Protection Modules. Refer to Surge Protection Modules. Connections to the Ethernet and SiteBus ports are made using a standard CAT5 Ethernet cables. The RMB-3 is designed so that one Ethernet port connects to the host Remote, and the other connects to another RMB-3 or other network device. RMB-3s can be daisy-chained together in this manner to expand I/O capacity as needed. The SiteBus port accommodates one-wire digital temperature and humidity sensors. Step 9: Connect DC Power Input WARNING: Turn off the power feed before connecting wires. CAUTION: A readily accessible disconnect device (suitably approved and rated) must be incorporated in the field wiring. Connect the input power feed to the two-position DC power input connector in the lower right corner of the RMB-3 (see Front Panel Components, right side) using the steps listed below. Be careful to observe polarity. Notes: Connect power connector to a reliably grounded +/-20 to 60 VDC safety extra-low voltage (SELV) source. Use 16 AWG copper conductors. Typical circuit fuse: 3 A To connect wires: 1. Turn off power feed. 2. Strip ends of wire 5/16 in. (7 mm). 3. (optional) Using a small flathead screwdriver, loosen screws on sides of power connector on the bottom right front of RMB-3. Remove the power connector as necessary. 4. Apply an appropriate antioxidant to the conductor surfaces. Then insert wires into the correct connector inputs and tighten the screws on top of the connector. 5. Replace and tighten the connector in the DC power input as necessary. Page 15

Installation When the above steps are complete, turn on the power supply. The green LED left of the DC power input illuminates when the RMB-3 is powered. Page 16
