Issue 1 www.class-connection.com VCMDM MODEM INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS The VCMDM Modem Package allows the user to program the Class Connection TM or VC-24 System from an off-site location. This document describes, separately, installation of the VCMDM hardware for use with these systems. VC-24 VCMDM Modem Installation The Option Board must be installed on the Control Unit Board prior to setup. (Refer to Option Board Installation Instructions). WARNING: Disconnect main power before servicing. 1. Set up modem as described in the setup section of this manual. 2. Mount modem wall bracket to the wall using the two wood screws provided. 3. Slide modem into bracket (modem connections are accessible from the top; a foot on the bottom of the bracket holds the modem in the bracket). 4. Plug DB9 connector from cable into Option Board (connector P1). Refer to drawing below for location on side of VC-24 enclosure. P10 P1 PC Programming Port (located on Option Board) 5. Class Connection TM VCMDM Modem Installation This portion of the document describes installation of the VCMDM hardware for use with the Class Connection TM System. WARNING: Disconnect main power before servicing. 1. Set up modem as described in the setup section of this manual. 2. Mount modem wall bracket to the wall using the two wood screws provided. 3. Slide modem into bracket (modem connections are accessible from the top; a foot on the bottom of the bracket holds the modem in the bracket). 4. Modem Setup The VCMDM modem is initially set up with the Class Connection TM or VC-24 Programming Tool. USING THE PROGRAMMING TOOL To open the Programming Tool, click on the icon, or from the taskbar, click the Start button, point to Programs, select either the VC-24 or Class Connection programming tool. The Remote Modem Setup is found on the File, Communications, Setup, Remote Modem Setup. The program asks if you are using a US Robotics Sportster modem with DIP switches. If Yes was selected, with the modem power OFF, set the dip switches to the settings shown below and then click on OK. For a description of DIP switch functions, refer to the table below. 1. Complete the instructions on the screen and click OK. The next screen to be displayed requests selection of a COM Port. Select the proper COM Port and click OK. The program then attempts to test the communication line between the PC and the modem. If the connection is okay, continue to Step 2. If the connection fails, you can Abort the setup, Retry the setup, or ignore the warning. 2. After establishing a successful connection, restore the modem's factory default settings as shown below by clicking on Yes. 4 947225
3. The default modem commands for the US Robotics Sportster appear below. Select the appropriate command string for the system type and modem being used. Click on Enter to send these commands to the modem. 4. Save the settings to the modem's memory by selecting Yes as shown in the figure below. 5. After modem setup is complete, a screen appears verifying a successful or unsuccessful setup. Once successfully programmed, the modem may be relocated and connected to the Class Connection TM or VC-24 System. Please note: A modem configured with the VC-24 programming tool cannot be used with the Class Connection TM. Likewise, a modem configured with the Class Connection TM programming tool cannot be used with the VC-24. 5 947225
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE When trouble is reported, verify there are no broken connections. Assistance in troubleshooting is available from the factory. Call (877) 427-2166 and ask for Technical Support. Valcom equipment is not field repairable. Valcom, Inc. maintains service facilities in Roanoke, VA. Should repairs be necessary, attach a tag to the unit clearly stating company name, address, phone number, contact person, and nature of the problem. Send the unit to: Valcom, Inc. Repair & Return Dept. 5614 Hollins Road Roanoke, VA 24019-5056 Class Connection TM LIMITED WARRANTY Valcom, Inc. warrants its products to be free from defects in materials and workmanship under conditions of normal use and service for a period of two years from the date of shipment. The obligation under this warranty shall be limited to the replacement, repair or refund of any such defective device within the warranty period, provided that: 1. inspection by Valcom, Inc. indicates the validity of the claim, 2. the defect is not the result of damage, misuse, or negligence after the original shipment, 3. the product has not been altered in any way or repaired by others and that factory sealed units are unopened (A service charge plus parts and labor will be applied to units defaced or physically damaged), 4. freight charges for the return of products to Valcom are prepaid, 5. all units 'out of warranty' are subject to a service charge. The service charge will cover minor repairs (Major repairs will be subject to additional charges for parts and labor). This warranty is in lieu of and excludes all other warranties, expressed or implied, and in no event shall Valcom, Inc. be liable for any anticipated profits, consequential damages, loss of time or other losses incurred by the buyer in connection with the purchase, operation or use of the product. This warranty specifically excludes damage incurred in shipment. In the event a product is received in damaged condition, the carrier should be notified immediately. Claims for such damage should be filed with the carrier involved in accordance with the F.O.B. point.
