CommPortal Assistant is a thin software client that runs on your PC. This client is accessible in you system tray and it offers easy desktop access into your CommPortal Dashboard account, provides pop up notifications, call handling options and click to dial access to your personal contacts. Before attempting to download CommPortal Assistant you will have to have previously logged into your Commportal Dashboard, please review your Commportal User Guide which can be found at the FairPoint HPBX reference material site http://www.fairpoint.com/home/hosted-pbx.html CommPortal Assistant is a subscription-based feature that you download to run on your computer. It is available as a standard feature on FairPoint s Hosted PBX Business Advantage Plus and Business Advantage Premium seat packages. To download CommPortal Assistant: System requirements CommPortal Assistant is supported on the following platforms: Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or later) Windows Vista Windows 7 Windows 8 (CommPortal Assistant is not supported on Win 8 RT (Windows for ARM devices) and so cannot be run on tablet devices). Outlook integration and synchronization is supported for Microsoft Outlook 2003 or later. Internet Explorer version 8 or later must be installed on the PC, even if an alternative such as Firefox has been set up as the default browser. CommPortal Assistant requires approximately 8 MB of disk space for installation. CommPortal Assistant also requires.net 3.5, a component of the Windows operating system. Most PCs already have.net 3.5; however, if necessary, the installation process will provide the subscriber with a link to download it from Microsoft. This download is free. MAC OS is not supported. Installing Your CommPortal Assistant To download CommPortal Assistant, simply follow the steps outlined below: 1. Open CommPortal: Navigate to www.fairpoint.com/hostedpbx from any web browser. From here you can access the CommPortal account login URL specific to your location, by clicking on the appropriate hyperlink. 2. Login using your 10-digit phone number and CommPortal password. 3. Go to the Apps tab and select On your Computer Page 2 of 14
3. Select the Assistant application, then click the highlighted link for the appropriate PC operating system software to start the download. Page 3 of 14
4. Your computer may perform a security check prior to downloading and present a Window with a security warning. The appearance of these boxes will depend upon the browser and PC operating system (OS) you are using. Click that you approve this download. 5. An executable installation file will be downloaded for you to run. Click on the file to install. 6. Next, you will see a security warning: Do you want the following program to make changes to your computer? Click Run. 7. The CommPortal Assitant Wizard will start up to guide you through installing the application on your computer. Click Next. Page 4 of 14
8. Please read the entire End-User License Agreement and if you agree to all the terms and conditions check the box next to I accept terms in the License Agreement. Then click Next. 9. If you are happy with the default installation option selected (recommended) click Next. If not make the selection of your personal preferences and then click Next. Page 5 of 14
10. Chose Setup Type, Complete is highly recommended and then click Next Page 6 of 14

13. Your PC must be restarted to finish the initial set up of CommPortal Assistant. Please save all your work and close any other open programs and click Yes 14. Accession will then launch and offer A Service Provider Selection window. Select the appropriate FairPoint entity that is providing your service from the options provided. 15. Please read the entire End User License Agreement (EULA) and if you agree to all terms click Accept 16. It is highly recommended that request place this application in your taskbar for greatest ease of use, by selecting Yes. 17. When installation is complete you will see the CommPortal Assistant Application in you task tray. You can modify you status, by clicking on the green status checkbox as per below. Page 9 of 14
18. If you right click on the CommPortal Assistant chevron ICON you will be presented with the following menu. We will walk though each option below. View Messages- This option will take you directly to the Messages and Calls Tab of your CommPortal Dashboard to review play or manage your messages. Page 10 of 14
Open Dashboard- Easy, on click access to your CommPortal Dashboard tab. Place Calls From- This option designates which phone number will originate Click to Dial Calls. The default is your CommPortal line but you can assign a remote number, as well, like a cell phone or home phone by hovering over this option, selecting Enter Number and inputting the 10 digit number of the line you want to originate these calls from. Outlook Contact Sync- Make selections on Outlook Contacts Sync tab. Click to Synchronize with you Outlook contact list (Max 1000). This is typically set up during initial install. Settings- Opens to General tab, this should be populated during initial install but if you want to change options or if you need to update your user name and password info this is where this can be accomplished. Check for Updates- Manually initiate a check for any new CommPortal Assistance Software available. If a new release is available the Download button will be available. If you selected Check for updates automatically in the General tab, you will be prompted that a new version is available automatically when you log in. Help- This option provides access to an online user forum to assist in answering application questions. Please do not use this link to report software bugs, user functionality issues or any other service troubles. Page 13 of 14
