Conversion Guide VHS to DVD Using Roxio Easy VHS to DVD 3 How to Transfer a single VHS tape to a DVD Equipment needed: Toshiba VHS to DVD Converter (with controller), mobile lab laptop computer, monitor, Roxio software (already installed on lab laptop) 1. Start Easy VHS to DVD by double-clicking the Easy VHS to DVD icon on the laptop desktop screen. 2. Click Record DVD. 3. Insert your VHS tape into the Toshiba VHS. 4. Press the Play button on your VCR. The video appears in the Easy VHS to DVD preview window. 5. Fast-forward or rewind the VHS tape to the position where you want to begin recording using the VCR controller. Stop the tape at the place you would like to start recording. 6. Adjust the volume, if necessary, using the Playback Level control. 1
7. Adjust the audio recording level, if necessary, by moving the Adjust Recording Level slider left or right. The recording meter should barely reach the red area [small boxes on the far right] when the loudest portion of the tape is played. 8. Give your DVD a title by filling out the Title field in the box on the screen. 9. Select the disc drive you will use to burn the DVD [only one is allowed]. 10. Insert a blank disc into the drive you selected in the previous step. 11. Select a Quality level. Choose a setting that accommodates the total amount of video you plan to record on this disc. [Note: when Best Quality is selected, the DVD capacity is lower than when Longest Play Time is selected. If your VHS tape is longer than one hour, two discs may be needed to capture the entire contents of the VHS.] 2
12. Optional: Set the recording duration. If you know the exact duration of the current video, just type it in. If not, enter an approximate value that you know to be slightly longer than the video duration. 13. Use the controller for the VCR to return the tape to the correct starting position. 14. Click the Start Recording button on Easy VHS to DVD. It should be on the bottom right corner of the screen. 15. If you set a recording duration, Easy VHS to DVD will stop recording automatically. If not, click the Stop recording button when you reach the end of your tape. It may take a couple of minutes to complete the rendering process after hitting the stop button, so please be patient. 16. When the recording process is complete, a completion screen will pop up on the screen. Click the Done button and this will close out the screen. 17. Eject your new video DVD disc by opening the DVD tray on the laptop. 18. You can also eject the VHS from the Toshiba VCR at this point. 19. Lastly, please close the Roxio Software by clicking the red X button at the top right corner of the screen on the laptop. 3
20. Label the DVD with a title using the Sharpie marker provided in the mobile lab. You can write on the side of the disc with the printed label, but don t write on the shiny side. [See photo] Side to write on Don t write on this side 21. Enjoy your new converted DVD. 22. If your DVD runs out of space to record the remaining footage on the VHS, you can rewind the VHS to the spot that it finished recording at. Insert a different DVD into the laptop and follow steps 4 to steps 20. This will record the remaining footage on the second DVD. 4
