Integrating RDX QuikStation into QNAP NAS Backup INTEGRATION BRIEF SQNAP NAS Systems provide an OS-built in utility to enable scheduled backups to network attached storage systems to secure business critical data. With the integration of Tandberg Data s RDX QuikStation removable media appliance, users can now implement a full disaster recovery solution. Even almost all QNAP NAS storage systems offer data redundancy via RAID technology, data should be backed up to an external device to be protected against hardware failures or human errors. An easy to use built in utility allows scheduled backups to USB attached devices like memory sticks or external hard disks. But these devices don t offer much reliability, durability and capacity, as they are not specifically designed for backup and archiving tasks with on/offline storage requirements. The RDX removable storage systems are a media based rugged, reliable and convenient backup appliances which fit perfectly into a professional backup strategy. With its iscsi technology, RDX QuikStation easily attaches to QNAP NAS systems over the network. After the backup job has completed, the RDX QuikStation media can be ejected to be placed into a secure location. Another media should then be inserted for the next backup job. This media rotation scenario provides the best protection against data loss and unpredictable failures and disasters. The following guide explains how to integrate an RDX QuikStation appliance directly to a QNAP NAS system and how to schedule a backup job. RDX QuikStation is an iscsi based flexible removable media appliance QNAP NAS Systems provide integrated backup applications

Introducing RDX QuikStation to QNAP NAS Start your NAS system and connect your RDX QuikStation appliance to your network. Set an appropriate IP-address according to the RDX QuikStation manual. Insert RDX media into the drives. From the home page window, click on Control Panel. Click on Storage Manager. Click on Remote Disk. Then click on Add Virtual Disk.

Enter the IP-address you specified for the RDX QuikStation. Click on Get Remote Disk. Target and initiator names are now displayed. Click the Target Name pull-down menu and choose the desired drive of the QuikStation by selecting the appropriate iscsi qualifier name (iqn). Here, we choose rdx3. Click on Next. Assign a virtual disk name and a LUN. Format the disk by checking the box Format virtual disk now and specifying a file system. Click on Next.

The virtual disk is now created. Click on Finish. The virtual disk is now displayed in the storage manager window. Repeat the above steps for further RDX docks you want to introduce. You might want to create subfolders using the File Station.

Establish a Backup Job to RDX QuikStation Close the Storage Manager. Close the Control Panel. At the home page click on Backup Station. Choose RTRR Server from the left menu. As real time remote replication is not enabled as default, please check the appropriate box. You need to provide a pasword, even if this is not needed in our case. Click Apply. In the Backup Station window click on RTRR... under the Remote Replication section. Then click on Create a Replication Job.

The Create a Job wizard starts up. Select Backup then select Local folder to remote folder. Click Next. As the RDX QuikStation dock is acting like a local disk, enter localhost as the name of the host name. Keep server type and port. Enter the password of the QNAP NAS. You might want to test the connection. Then click on Next. Select source folder(s) you want to backup. Select the destination folder, in our case QS4-Dock3 as we created previously. Click on Next.

Follow the next steps by defining a schedule and a job name. In our example we chose Backup of Pictures. Check your settings, click Next to create the job, click Finish. The backup job is now listed and will be started according to the specified schedule. You can also start the backup job by clicking the arrow icon.

Restoring your Data from RDX QuikStation To restore your data from RDX QuikStation, you can either create a Restore Job or using the File Station utility of your QNAP NAS. To create a restore job, proceed like creating a backup job. Choose Restore and Remote folder to local folder. Swap the used source and destination folders in the next step. Choose a name. Here, Restore of Pictures is used. Now both jobs exist in parallel.

To restore your data from RDX QuikStation using the File Station utility of your QNAP NAS, select File Station from the main menu. In our example, we lost files in the Data\Pictures folder. This folder was backed up to QS4-Dock3\Backup of Pictures\ latest\data\pictures. For each backup job, a subdirectory is created. Under this, you find the subdirectory latest for the latest backup. If the Backup Versioning app is installed, former backups are stored under the subdirectory named with the corresponding time stamp. Underneath, the directory structure of the source is taken over. Select all files you want to restore. Drag and drop them to the appropriate directory, here Data\ Pictures.

A popup-window appears which lets you select from various options: - Copy and skip existing files - Copy and overwrite existing files - Move and skip existing files - Move and overwrite existing files We recommend to check the box merge selected items into one task. The Files are restored.
